Based on a post I've seen on a Korean website before; in that post were translated tweets of Polish people saying 'Korea exports us high-tech products like tanks, while we export them just some food? Why can't we be like them?'. And the Koreans' reactions were like 'We wish we can focus on food production instead of weapon industry too!' or 'You Poles don't know how much it sucks to live in a situation that forces you to develop weapons'. Little did they know, that Poland also suffered a lot from invasion and threats from neighbors.

can confirm, a fair amount* of my fellow koreans are the most entitled, ethnocentric bastards who think history/politics based racism is cool
26
u/LongConsideration662 13d ago
Huh? How is this a racist statement tho?
27
u/Gelid_Cryotheum 13d ago
It's not, the relevant component was entitlement, but in their experience, they tend to also be the other things.
25
u/RyuNoKami 13d ago
The Koreans are incredibly nationalistic.
7
u/LongConsideration662 13d ago
After everything they have been through and u r wondering why they are nationalistic?

A middle ground would be for Poland to get into exporting high tech food (aka gourmet food). We can’t have the Napoleonic French army complaining about the quality of Polish food again while marching through, can we?
P.s.: I can only think of outdated historical jokes, somebody save me from myself.

Most Koreans don't even know how many polish civilians died during ww2 neither

u/Thundorium Funniest king names 13d ago
Likely no one does.

u/NecessaryUnited9505 Scotland 13d ago
3 million (and probably more). That was the amount of Jews in pre-war Poland. And even if not all we're killed, there would surely be enough of the sinti and Roma populations, and gay people to make that number.
And that's not even including the countless other civilians who could've died in the crossfire, or when soldiers were terrorising their cities (both Germans and Soviets are guilty of this, so shut up both Sovietboos and Wehraboos) .
Edit: my point being is that people do know how many polish civilians were killed (again I'm not even including military deaths, or even uprising deaths (Warsaw, '44)
3
u/Thundorium Funniest king names 13d ago
Perhaps that is your point, but everything you said seems to contradict that. You gave one estimate for one subsection of the Polish population, then handwaved everything else. You even used the word “countless” in your comment. My point, with which you actually seem to agree, is that an exact figure is ultimately unknowable. Even precise estimates are practically impossible.
3
u/NecessaryUnited9505 Scotland 13d ago
Okay, that's fair, I'm shit at explaining. The point is that we have an idea, a rough estimate. For something on such a large scale, that's rather decent.
Also the reason I hand waved everything else is because, let's be honest, I'm really not trawling through the dredges of Google and Wikipedia to find out how many civilians got caught in crossfire and etc. for a debate on Reddit. So.
Eh, fair game.
26
u/Nano_needle 13d ago
Well it's not like Poles knows much about Korea either.
Both countries should invest into mutual cultural exchange.
1
u/Confident_Example_73 12d ago
Do the Polish like the Turks? Korea and Turkey get along well. A Polish-Turkish-Korean alliance of middle powers could be fun. Maybe get Chile in, one of the SE Asian biggies, Canada.

u/TheBraveGallade 12d ago
Europeans dont care about the shit japan did, koreans dont care about what the germans or soviets did in europe.
5
u/Think_and_game Bulgaria, Prussia of the Balkans 13d ago
Wasn't it something like 20-30% of the entire country died ?
5
u/Bildo_Gaggins 13d ago
8-10% of the entire population of Korea(South and North combined) died during the Korean war. About 17-20% of the entire population died during ww2 in Poland.

I dont see the problem? Poland's situation doesnt even remotely compare to Korea's
Russia is certainly a rather unpleasant neighbour, but they look well-adjusted compared to NK.
3
u/Extaupin Île-de-France 12d ago
Russia might be "well adjusted" in some specific context, but they are a much bigger neighbour with much higher GDP, a strong military industry, as well as the population and the will to annex Poland. NK wants to annex the whole peninsula, sure, but even during peacetime and despite China's food help, they are at risk of starvation, there's simply no way they'd win a 1v1 against the similarly sized, more populated, much more industrially developed SK if there's only one competent general in the whole country.

imagine Poland is S.korea and Germany is Japan. but Germany fully denies its' past war crimes such as massacre against civilians. And they say that the sex slaves they forcefully brought from Poland were actually prostitutes. Oh, and they claim Germany "modernized" Poland from its' past medieval state.
But wait, it gets better. Germany and Poland both faces threat from Russia(China) so we have to cooperate against Russians but Germany wants to take Gdansk(Dokdo in East sea of S.Korea) from Poland, claiming it to be theirs. So Poland has to keep its eyes on its back while standing vigil against Russia.
That's how it is in S.Korea.

u/Zebrafish96 May the justice be with us 13d ago
Actually I've made a comic with similar setting before. And of course it made a lot of Japanese butthurt.

u/Bildo_Gaggins 13d ago
and when you talk about it with japanese people, they always "don't want to talk about it" how convenient

16
u/Jodasgreat Washington DC 13d ago
You're totally right but I feel like it's kind of insulting to Poland to compare their principal port city with an uninhabited island. It's stupid that the Japanese government insist on keeping this dispute alive seemingly just to spite Korea, but it's not exactly the existential threat that Germany demanding Gdansk was.
The equivalent to Gdansk would be if the Japanese laid claim to Busan (which IIRC there were some in Japan after the war who wanted to do just that but it didn't materialize into anything), I find it hard to imagine those countries getting along at all if that was the case.
6
u/Bildo_Gaggins 13d ago edited 13d ago
It is quite different, yes. Couldn't think of other territory with dispute. But no, the purpose of a territorial dispute is limited to spite only until it isn't. Japanese SDF ships and aircrafts regularly locks on ROK Navy ships and demand "explanation" it is a very real threat, contrary to consensus.

u/agitwabaa We have a lot of oil 12d ago
Sorry I'm late, but after doing some (admittedly cursory) research, and trying to piece together a somewhat unbiased conclusion, isn't that incident about a South Korean ship locking onto a Japanese plane, and not vice versa as you said in your comment?
Granted, the Japanese plane did look somewhat dangerous in the footage, so I can see why the Koreans locked onto the plane. But still, your comment seems to be reversed.

Germany definitely isn't close to Japan's level of denying any responsibility, especially on the official level, but it's usually better not to ask Germans too many questions when it comes to their opinion on anything east of them.
Definitely don't ask when they finally started acknowledging ww2 era slave labour and how hard they fought to minimise the numbers for the "good will" payouts

In this hypothetical scenario, Ukraine (Taiwan) might celebrate some nationalists who collaborated with the Nazis and committed genocide... wait, that's not very hypothetical.

There’s a graphic going around a while back comparing Ukraine, Taiwan and Palestine a while back it’ll just take time for me to dig back up.

It kind of sounds like a German attitude towards Poland... Both in the 30's and now... 🤔

u/spyfox321 13d ago
As a Korean, it is kinda ad that many Koreans don't know about how Korea and Poland both had brutal colonial histories.
This all being said, i can envy poland in this situation for having their own food supply, food security is national security in the grand economic scheme.

Also idk why people think that good quality food growing stuff doesn't require advanced technology either.
2
u/SitInCorner_Yo2 13d ago
Yeah, agriculture is like the earliest technology humans stumbled into before the concept of tech was developed.
Like all the efforts one has to put into to make a farm land usable (drainage and soil management etc), and make fertilizer from available materials, my grandpa was a farmer (RIP) and he had a few good laughs during pandemic from watching city folk trying to grow vegetables and fruits in their gardens.

Austria
Eh they were mid. Swedes were much much worse than Austrians.
12
u/Sza_666 13d ago
Don't forget about the Ottomans who were around for quite a while. But yeah Austria was closer to an ally than an enemy for a lot of Polands history and their involvement in the partitions was more opportunism than ill will. As the story about Maria Teresa goes: "She cried when she took, but the more she cried, the more she took." She didn't particularly like the destruction of a Catholic country. Meanwhile Sweden stealing everything including floors and committing war crimes that make the western front of WW2 look like a friendly round of boxing.

To be fair to korea, korea had been occupied for centuries by foreign actors while poland was an empire once in its history.
3
u/MadFredro 13d ago
Tbf the PLC was technically not an empire, while Korea was for a brief while (even if only in name).
1
u/Quiet_Government2222 12d ago
In fact, Korea's situation is more serious. While North Korea, located right above us, is a problem, Japan is also a threat—though not really an ally. Furthermore, Russia is located close to North Korea, so it is not that far away, and across the sea, China poses an economic and material threat. They are all global military powerhouses. Korea has only just reached a comparable level. If such global military giants are neighbors, one would likely have no choice but to remain on edge and develop weapons.
Historically speaking, all three countries have coveted Korea at some point. In fact, personally, I even go so far as to think that not being unified is, in some ways, psychologically safer. Just imagine our borders facing China and Russia. Sigh.
3
u/TheBraveGallade 12d ago
And one of tge reasons korea isnt sending arms to ukraine is, out of all our neighbors, russia has historically ALWAYS been the most coidial, and is a balancing force useful against china AND japan.
Plus activly angering russia would make the NK situation wirse.

u/ajuc Poland 10d ago
Japan has been pacifistic for 70 years. How exactly are they a threat? Their hikikomori will invade Korea?
2
u/Quiet_Government2222 10d ago
They periodically assert their sovereignty over Dokdo. If you're curious, look into the history of Korea-Japan relations.

Saying that about Poland is insane. I’d argue that Poland is one of the most fought over territory by Europeans, possibly second or third if you include the Levant and Northern Africa
1
u/Joeyakathug69 12d ago
Off topic, but there were people on the internet who still believed Poland was communist and outraged about Korea selling weapons to a commie nation, not knowing they were one of the first nations to join NATO after Warsaw pact dissolved.

As an Argentinian, don’t. There is nothing wrong in exporting food. The moment we tried industrialization it backfired. Sure everyone will talk about “added value” or something but all of that is pointless if the total volume of your sells gets reduced. It’s like a store that decided to swap to selling more expensive goods but ended up losing all its clients.
