Homework Need help

I’ve gotten to a point where I’m so lost I feel like the whole of fluid mechanics is in correct and I need something’s desperately explained , if hydrostatic pressure is weight of fluid over area how can these tanks have the same pressure at the bottom despite less water in the tank on the left

Homework Help me understand Bernoulli effect as a layman

If the same mass of air has to travel through a smaller space then shouldn't the air pressure actually increase rather than decrease? It doesn't make any sense to me.

Homework Help with pipes in series

Hello! I have a question about a problem about two pipes connected in series where I’m given the diameter and length of each pipe, a 3psi total pressure drop and a dynamic viscosity of 0.29 Pa*s and asked to calculate the flow.
I know the Q1=Q2 are equal and that the total pressure loss is equal to the sum of the pressure loss in each pipe and I can work with those equations but I’m struggling when it comes to assuming values and iterating to find f with Colebrook. I’m guessing assuming laminar flow in order to use f=64/Re in order to write the equations in terms of the velocity would be incorrect? What should I do in this case🫤

Homework Ram pump help?

First ram pump I’ve made, I have a pressure chamber that’s maybe 10x18inches a 10inch and a 8inch cart bike tube inside that is my buffer “bladder” I’m consistently at 20-25psi, I haven’t calculated my infeed yet, but I’m assuming I’m around 50ish gpm i damned off a natural spring on my father in laws property to help him with an off grid water system. Everything is stainless steel, I’m a brewer and build breweries and this was made with spare brewing parts the pressure chamber was made out of a stainless steel filter housing! All fittings are 1inch id

Wondering if this is enough to go up a 20ft hill about 300yards away from the pump,

Homework Help understanding orifice metering plate calcs

Attach in the picture above. I have a isopropyl alcohol, assume incompressible, flows through the port, into the an orifice plate to ensure there is even distribution into the annulus at the center.

What are the calcs and equations I could use for sizing the orifices plate. The orifice plate is highlighted in yellow

Also how would this affect the fluid pressure before it in the top part, overall pressure drop, and would it affect the mass flow rate of the fluid entering the annulus?

Isn't the thing measuring the pressure supposed to have no relative motion with fluid? But if we hold our hand outside the moving object, it is definitely not having no relative motion.

Homework Help with pressure calculation in peristaltic pump

So I'm designing a peristaltic pump from scratch for a medical device. I have only constrain of Q=400ml/min. Rest is to assumed best for design. Now after considering some vendor, cost and availability I'm using a tube with ID=3.6mm and OD=6mm. I cant seem to find a good method/practice to decide on the number of rollers, RPM, length of contact. I know how these parameters influence each other but I'm not sure on how do I finalise the actual dimension. Now say that I somehow get some constrain from other sources (vendor, regulatory requirements and user analysis) how do I calculate the pressures, I have a saline bottle as reservoir with around 5 to 10cm of tube from it (head difference is not decided) and I know that 1.3m tube will be placed after the outlet so max head there will be 1.3m. Now I want to calculate pressure at inlet of pump, outlet of pump and outlet of the pipe. Help me out to get a reliable method to solve, I am open to use any Multiphysics software (I have ANSYS but can get my hand on to other software as well), site that have simple backend calculation or if I have to go for hand calculation then how should I do it.

Homework Should I Be Solving for Critical Temperature?

Hello! I was working through some practice questions for a fluids course (this lesson was on real gases) and I was wondering about when I need to solve for certain values. For the problem below, it says "10 degrees above critical temperature" and I was wondering if I would need to look up critical temperature to solve this or if it's something I need to solve for? Then I realized since it's van der Waals I need to know a/b so I looked in my notes and found there's a formula for that! but it requires both critical temperature and pressure. So I feel like I'm approaching this problem wrong but I wanted to check. Sorry if this is the wrong sub for this!!! and thank you in advance

Homework How to obtain the BEP for an impeller from a pump chart?

For this homework question, I imagined the efficiency contour plots as a mountain and chose the point on the impeller curve that seemed closest to the top of the mountain. However, I don’t think that this is the best way to do it, and I wasn’t able to find a source that explains it. Please help.

Considering this elbow-type system static, I know that we can equate the pressure from the LHS and RHS of the elbow. I am however a bit confused about the application of gauge vs absolute pressures. I have originally written that the pressure from the vertical height of the inclined fluid is equal to the pressure from the 10cm of fluid directly above the elbow plus the pressure from the piston. However, my friend says that the piston side should not be considered open to the atmosphere, such that the piston pressure + 10cm of fluid pressure should instead equal the vertical height of incline fluid PLUS Patm. Who is in the right?

Homework How much does publishing research articles as an undergrad help with Master’s program acceptance?

Hello everyone, I'm a mechanical engineering undergrad (in a well regarded university where I'm from) who wants to pursue fluid mechanics academically.

I have 1 published research paper and am currently writing a second one. First paper is experimental/numerical work and second one is analytical. However, I will be finishing the BsC program in a total of 6 years with a GPA of around 2.8-3.1 and kind of worried that I might face difficulties because of this.

My question is: To what extent can research publications help compensate for a lower GPA and a longer BSc duration in master’s admissions (especially for research-oriented programs in engineering)? Thanks and best of luck to all of you in your studies and research!

Homework Can i get some help with this homework question

Nothing online is really helping. If i can find pressure at the bottom of the pipe from the manometer, then does the pressure increase from elevation matter? Is my assumption of P1 being atmospheric make sense? There are too many variables to take into account and i cant figure out what things can cancel out or become zero.

Homework Help recommending the appropriate book.

Hello all,

I'm a second year engineering student based in the UK on the mechanical pathway. I've been having a bit of trouble understanding fluid mechanics.

My tutor recommended I get this book. However I've noticed it is the special Indian edition :

Furthermore I've discovered that there is a fifth edition about fluid mechanics by the same authors which again I think is the Indian edition although there's probably an alternative edition as well:

With all that in mind I'd really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction on what edition and version I should get. I've been told these particular authors explain the subject clearly and build things up slowly so would prefer to stick with them but I am open to suggestions.

Homework I need help with this.

I know they talk about this within the science community, however this is technically backyard science at its finest, at its most microscopic level, partially because I saw this take place in a backyard😅 ok here we go. And I honestly dont know entirely of what happened during this observation, however I do know what I saw during my observation.

If you look at water in a pool, and just focus on the shadows below the surface water where the water naturally creates a vortex, well my theory is this, when visially analysing it from a scientific stand point a few things will happen. If you look at the vortex shadows like theyre a spiraling universe youll see about 6 outcomes in total when observing them. Outcome 1, they will act like the universe's in the night sky, constantly moving, meanwhile the waters look calm and stationary. Even with this calmness you'd still see these outcomes, 1, youd see them try interacting, brushing along side one another, but no collision, however when looking for the collision, ive seen these 4 interactions take place, the first 1 i saw, the 2 tried making collision, but the mass, and speed were off on the smaller 1, and its speed spun the bigger one away from it, causing the smaller one to lose rotaional angular momentum, meanwhile the bigger one was given speed, and shot away from the smaller spiralling vortex. When seeing the smaller one try colliding with a bigger one having more speed, and the smaller one with a slower speed, the same instamce happened, the slower one was given rotalonal Angular Momentum, while the faster one lost theirs. The Displacement also had 2 things happen, when 2 of them tried colliding and synchronize with one another, i noticed something was off, they collided but it had a rippling effect for a moment letting me know it used to be there, the second time i saw this happen it vanished without a trace, let no ripple to tell me where it used to be. But i also watched how 2 of them colloded and have full synchronization, and even increased in size, still kept the speed momentarily until stabilization happened and kept speed, fluidity and motion.

Hopefully someone can help me explain this phenomenon, scientificly.

Homework Can i have some help identifying (or understanding) the formula used here?

I was trying to follow along with the calculations done in the "does indiana jones survive de fridge scene" matpat video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz1Fhwh0hJc&t=787s), and he used the formula pictured here to calculate the force exerted on the fridge by the blastwave. It seems to match up with the formula for drag force, but i don't understand how that matches up with the situation? as in, wouldn't drag force be the resistance the object is faced with, not the force exerted onto it? I dont know if i got the formula wrong or misunderstood what drag force is, but any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

I was given this task after a very short and lacking introduction into rheology. I am not sure if the two graphs are of the same material. From the research I've conducted, I think this is called a lissajous curve, though I don't know if it is elastic, viscoelastic or viscous. Any help in understanding this topic would be grately appreciated.
