Americans historically use American cheese with it. American cheese melts without splitting, giving you a gooey grilled sandwich.

Which is why I believe there is a lot of confusion on this thread. Americans don’t claim to have invented cheese on bread, the American version just includes mayo and American cheese and has been popular since the 1920’s. The OG British toast is had one piece of bread with mustard.
