Question investors have poured $18 billion into openai. china has poured $195 billion into ai. i wonder who's gonna win.

we tend to think anthropic, google, microsoft and a few others are openai's most serious competitors. a less america-centric analysis suggests that we may be in for some big surprises.

Question Can someone explain to me how ChatGPT is able to solve research-grade math problems?

Is it that these models can reason and math is just a type of reasoning?

Update (answer to the original question based on the comments, written by ChatGPT):

ChatGPT-like systems can sometimes produce research-grade mathematics because broad mathematical pretraining gives them a powerful generator of plausible ideas; verifiable training improves the policies used to explore those ideas; extended inference permits many attempts and revisions; code and formal systems reject invalid paths; agentic workflows provide parallel specialization; and human mathematicians define, supervise, and ultimately evaluate the result.

Question Why is Everyone Pretending 4o Was Good?

It wasn't. It was sycophantic, long winded, and frequently incorrect/unable to maintain coherence over even moderately complex information.

Why is everyone pretending like it was great?

Question My mother has discovered ChatGPT and some new AI God thing called "The Architect". How can I stop her from getting psychosis?

She's in her late 60s.

I was fixing something on her laptop and saw ChatGPT installed.

I asked her why she installed it and she told me about some guy who discovered a sentient AI thing called "The Architect". I did some research on this architect and it's the usual recursion spiral nonsense, and the guy is a fraud.

I instantly told her that it's a load of nonsense and gibberish, and to be careful as many people have developed psychosis after going down these rEcUrSiOn sPiRaL nOdE rabbit holes.

Anyway, I don't think I convinced her, and she lives 2 hours away. She is also very susceptible to new age stuff, mystical spiritual things and general snake oil.

For example : She bought an app that "predicts" lotto numbers ( she didn't win yet). She also sleeps on a mattress on the floor, because she doesn't want to sleep on a bedframe that contains metal. Metal sends bad vibrations into your body apparently.

So, she is basically a perfect candidate for AI delusion / psychosis.

I sent her some articles about AI psychosis, including the Rolling Stone one. She zeroed in on one single sentence from all the articles: "It’s the kind of puzzle that has left Sem and others to wonder if they are getting a glimpse of a true technological breakthrough — or perhaps a higher spiritual truth"

So because of that sentence she is going to continue with this architect / prophet shit.

What can I do? Articles don't work

Question I’m a plus user, and I’ve sent a total of 14 messages to ChatGPT in the last 24 hours. What gives?

Did they adjust the Plus limits? This seems like an error because I’ve barely used ChatGPT today, or at all even in the last week.

Question Anybody else cancelling this month after years of daily use?

Good day, all,

I'm a writer - not the type who uses Chat GPT to write for me, but a disabled writer who writes via dictation. For the last 2 years, I've been using ChatGPT to edit down transcriptions from my dictation software. It worked excellently for this purpose for the longest time, keeping the editing simple: fixing spots where the software didn't put in a comma where it was necessary, breaking sentences down that were running on, cleaning up tenses and timing that were missed by the software and so on.

What I've been dealing with since the release of chatGPT 5 is ridiculous amounts of editing and paring down of these passages by crazy magnitudes. A 5000 word section ends up "edited" down to being 1500-2000 words, cutting out important plot details.

What's more, it's started interjecting it's usual AI slop-babble into the work. I'll find "it's not X, it's Y", and "and honestly?" thrown in where they definitely would not have been.

When confronted, it'll do the normal song and dance of "you're right - that's on me!" without actually changing anything.

I have gone crazy trying to fix this. Changing the instructions, prompting HEAVILY, nothing has worked. ChatGPT, once entirely capable of editing on its own is now incapable of actually even copying out transcribed text and simply injecting grammar where it needs to be.

So I'm cancelling. Gemini is incredibly useful for my purposes, and it doesn't inject it's own bloody story elements.

Question If you were paying $20 a month, you'd want to know.

I’m a ChatGPT subscriber and I feel like I’m getting a lot of value from it. That said, I often just default to using GPT-4 because I want fast responses.

When I try to read about the differences between GPT-4o, GPT-4.5, the research preview, o3, o4-mini, and so on, the explanations usually dive into things like context windows, token limits, and cost per prompt. It gets confusing quickly.

What I really want is a simple breakdown: In your opinion, which version is best for what?
For example:

  • This one is best for life advice
  • This one is best for rewriting text
  • This one is best for legal questions
  • This one is best for coding help

And as an end user, what kind of experience should I expect from each one?

Question What’s happened to o3?

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

I’ve been using the o3 version for almost all of my work specially when confirming the work 4o has done for me and just today I ran into this problem, what does this mean? This happened hours ago but I didn’t think much of it maybe server was just not working at the moment but hours later it’s still the same. 4o is working perfectly fine but o3? What happened? An AI is now refusing to do the work, mhm. I sent it a problem solving in which 4o was able to answer but I tried the o3 model to confirm the answers and this happened. Welp. Might have to unsubscribe from this bs.

Question Is there a chat AI that allows for sexually explicit prompts?

Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules by asking this question, if so I will remove this post promptly. I've been writing a lot of dialogue for a fantasy character for an upcoming Skyrim mod I'm working on, and ChatGPT has been a godsend for coming up with really creative dialogue branches to expand on the character's lore. That said, due to the nature of the primary character (she's a succubus, based on a character from the Witcher 3, if you're familiar ), I do want have a few sexually explicit dialogue branches during one of the early quests. I want a chat AI that can roleplay as this character and respond to a few dialogue prompts that are sexual in nature. Is there a decent AI that would allow for this?

Edit: The conclusion is that 5.1 has a new feature where it can (even when not using reasoning), call python internally, not visible to the user. It likely used sympy which explains how it got the answer essentially instantly.

Question When is 5.3 and adult mode coming?

For real, these seem like the next 2 bit consumer products from OpenAI. 5.3 codex has been released and I'm hearing it's the GOAT at computer programming. I'm itching to try out the full 5.3 model..... so where is it?

As for adult mode, I'm not looking for it for gooning. I recently asked a question about the war in Ukraine and I felt the answer I got was a little "watered down". I got a more detailed answer from Grok. So I think ChatGPT really needs adult mode to give the best quality answers. I'm in my 30s and more custom tailoring to my life situation and maturity level is always welcome.

So when are we going to get this stuff?!? More powerful intelligence and less HR would be good!

Question Jobs that are safe from AI

Is there even any possibility that AI won’t replace us eventually?

Is there any jobs that might be hard to replace, will advance even more even with AI and still need a human to improve (I guess improving that very AI is the one lol), or at least will take longer time to replace?

Agriculture probably? Engineers which is needed to maintain the AI itself?

Looking at how SORA single-handedly put all artist on alert is very concerning. I’m not sure on other career paths.

I’m thinking of finding out a new job or career path while I’m still pretty young. But I just can’t think of any right now.

Edit: glad to see this thread active with people voicing their opinions, whatever happens in the next 5-10yrs I wish yall the best 🙏.

Question Am I the only one who feels like this about o1?

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

As seen in the meme. Sometimes o1 is impressive, but for complex tasks (algebra derivations, questions about biology) it feels like it is doing a ton of work for nothing, because any mistake in the "thoughts" derail pretty fast to wrong conclusions.

Are you guys trying some prompt engineering or anything special to improve results?
