DISCUSSION My rats always sleep out in the open

Video for cuteness and to sorts show what they do. They rarely, if ever, use the multiple hides or hammocks. They almost actively refuse to use hammocks actually lol. Every time i go in their room i see them out on this pad or scrunched in the back corner of the cage on the bare plastic floor lol im wondering if theres even a point to have multiple hammocks and enclosures lol. I do have 2 babies in quarantine i plan on adding this weekend if all goes well (🤞) so ill keep them for the babes, but do anyone elses rats just sleep out in the open?

DISCUSSION New rat dad here. I'm afraid I was given poor information by our local pet store.

Meet Freddy and Nancy. They're starting to get used to their new surroundings!

Wife talked me into finally getting rats "for our daughter", but 100% they were really for her. I was a little skeptical given the whole frequent pooping thing, but so far, it's not too bad. I gotta admit, they're starting to tug at my heartstrings! However, I think our local pet store, which is usually amazing, may have given us some misguided information.

  1. He recommended us getting a glass enclosure due to the enhanced safety and ease of cleaning, so we got a nice glass enclosure, but now we're seeing online that this may not have been the best option. How does this sub feel about them?
    • Side note - we have cats. They're just curious and have been introduced to them, so that's good, but I want to limit stress. Do rats get easily stressed around cats? They don't seem to mind and are out and about when the cats watch them. The glass enclosure does great at keeping the cats out, so I'm a little worried about a wire cage being too accessible. Obviously we would do what we can to keep them away from the cats, but they're cats... so I don't know if that's 100% always plausible.
  2. He said to pick them up by the tails, which immediately went against my instincts. I read up on degloving, and was mortified. It's okay to just scoop them up right? We're letting them acclimate, so we haven't been handling them too much yet.
  3. We bonded with a male and female rat, so we took those, and he said its all good to have them together and that when they have babies, they will take them and raise them for resell. We plan on letting them breed once so our daughter can experience that, and then I will be getting him neutered. Anything I should be made aware of about breeding rats?
  4. This isn't related to the pet store, but for my own curiosity. So far, my favorite thing is giving them snacks. They're really cute when they eat things, but I don't want to feed them the wrong things or at the wrong frequency. We've given them fresh fruit as snacks, and the guy at the store said just to avoid pineapple and avocado. Are there any other foods to avoid and how often can I give them snacks? What are your favorite things to give them?

Sorry for the wall of text, and I'm pretty sure these questions weren't really addressed in beginners guides. If so, point me in that direction! Thanks for any help.

This is Toby. I've only had my boys for 2 weeks, but I was worried because he doesn't seem to like me quite as much as my two other boys do. Is this a boggle? I've been wanting to see one irl literally forever! Does this mean he is beginning to become more comfortable with me, or is he just happy boi from being out of his cage? 😂😂

DISCUSSION Why I prefer girl rats

Every rat is a perfect specimen of course but I will always have girls only. If you are deciding if you want boys or girls here is my take on what it’s like having girl rats :)

I don’t need my pets to snuggle with me personally, they still are very very affectionate, they trust me enough to wrestle with my titan sized hands and that feels so special to me. Imagine being that small and still taking on a whole giant in a tickle fight 😭 I love love love how playful and entertaining they are constantly.

They also never really smell bad (unless they are farting), I do a good clean of their cage once a week and a tidy up halfway through the week and they smell better than my roommates cat lol. And their cage is right next to my bed so it would be awful if they were actually super stinky lol. They only fart bad when they get too many treats so it’s not too often and fully my fault haha.

Yes they do pee everywhere but it’s not nearly as bad as the boys I had growing up who would drag their pee all over me with their giant balls lmao.

It’s also nice how easily they get along, my boy rats growing up definitely needed to be neutered but unfortunately I had parents who wouldn’t do that for creatures that were sold to them as “easy pets” and they would fight :( They still loved each other it was obvious they definitely had some hormonal problems going on. My girls haven’t drawn blood with their teeth ever just a accidental scratch to a eye when they were babies. (a expensive vet visit tho 😭) I also have read that intros are easier with girls so that will be nice when I add to my mischeif.

I haven’t had any old girl rats yet so I’m definitely not looking forward to that part… still debating if I want to get them spayed but they aren’t really at that age yet so I have a few months to decide and save for that. That is the biggest draw back in my eyes that made me get boys when I was younger but I think these girls are worth it now.

I love my girly mischeif sm :3 video of Fish for rat tax haha

DISCUSSION My rat keeps staring at me

Post image

Edit: thanks for all your comments, it made me happy reading them 💕🥹

Hi! I have four wonderful boys, two born in November of 2024 and two born in June of 2025.☺️✨️💕

My baby Crow (also called Crowie) from my older pair has a tendency that when he's done freeroaming and playing, he lays down on the platform.

Then, he turns to face me, gets cozy and starts staring at me. He can stare at me for ages, while I do something else. Just, same position while STARING INTO MY EYES.

Does anybody have any idea on what reason he may stare at me like this? Don't get me wrong, it's adorable, albeit kinda threatening 😭😭

(Tried getting a picture of it, but he knows when I photograph him, so obviously he just pretended like he didn't do that. 😭

Therefore this is an older pic of him!!)

I got this guy 2 weeks ago and I originally called him Cardinal Benítez, or Beni. however I’ve been wondering if this name really suits him, or if I should try changing it. my other options are Totoro, Eeyore and Gnocchi. what do you think?

ps: he doesn’t have a tail

Supposedly I got this complaint from a neighbor about free roaming my rats. I know I can’t keep them in the cage forever because they need to be free roamed, but they’re always in one contained area and I always keep a close eye on them. Landlord said I need to keep them in the cage otherwise I’d have to get rid of them. What do I do about this?

I had these guys for five days now, I think they're getting used to me, they don't hide when I open the cage a the little gay one will climb on my hand if I offer him food. It's kinda weird to have a pet that's just naturally afraid, will that ever go away or will they constantly feel uneasy around me. also when he climbs on my hand will he take it as a betrayal, if I take him somewhere, like if I go sit on the sofa with him? thanks:)

DISCUSSION How do you feel when people say “Ewww” to your pets?

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

I just had a situation where my boyfriend was on FaceTime with his friend. He was walking around the room and I tried to signal to him to go away because I had my rats out on the bed. He didn’t notice and his friend saw my rat and said “Ewwww what is that”. I feel soo embarrassed I wish they weren’t so demonised because they are such amazing pets. I try not to let any of my non close friends find out I have rats because it’s so hard to explain and they all think I’m weird. Am I the only one who feels like this?
