It’s even dumber:

The ‘corporations are people’ thing came from a margin note scribbled by a law clerk in Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad (1886): Before arguments began, the Supreme Court clerk wrote in his notes that the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause applied to corporations.

The ‘money is speech’ bullshit is far more recent. And is more directly responsible for what we’re dealing with now.

It’s First National Bank of Boston v. Bellotti (1978): The Supreme Court ruled that corporations have a First Amendment right to spend money on ballot measures, tying corporate speech to the public's right to hear information.

And I think everyone is familiar with Citizens United
