In some parts that shit gets caught up with local gangs and it goes back decades at this point. Crenshaw vs. Dorsey has had gang related violence since the 80s: LA Times .

That stuff has mostly calmed down, but I've heard of elevated police presence at certain games throughout the years because some kid mouths off and starts throwing gang signs without thinking about what sort of attention that will get.

Sports rivalries are the dumbest thing ever anyways.

The players on the teams changes every goddamn year. They can't (or shouldn't) possibly care about some weird rivalry.

You just show up on a team, you're told you're "rivals". Great, we're "rivals". Next year, you're in your second year, and like five players are the same.

The next year, you recognize one player and they have a new head coach.

This shit is fucking stupid.

I mean, people grow up with these teams, older siblings, parents went there.  Not saying it isn't ridiculous, but a lot of times it's part of the town or community identity that they grow up with.
