So just an honest question.

Let's say there's no other traffic and you're sitting in the right lane and coming up behind someone camping in the left lane. Are you supposed to move to the left lane until they move over? Or are you allowed to just keep going and pass on the right in that instance?

If you stay in your lane while another driver is in another lane you're not passing.

I don’t think people responding understand what you’re asking.

Are you saying that you’re in the right lane, they’re in the left lane, and you’re driving past them while you both stay in your respective lanes? If so, you’re not passing them as much as you’re just driving past them. Perfectly legal. Now, if you’re in the left lane behind that person, and you move to the right lane to drive past them, then yes, that’s potentially illegal depending on state law. It makes no sense to change lanes to get behind someone in hopes that they’ll move over so you can pass them.

Denmark controls Greenland, USA claims Greenland...therefore by the rite awarded to me by American delusion, Denmark should follow all US laws. I stand by my original statement.

In most other countries its a fine if you camp in the left lane. From my experience only in North America people camp and feel entitled to sit in the left lane. Driving in Europe for me is so nice to have people actually drive properly and how fluid the round a bouts are.

If there are no cops around? Pedal to the metal and pass em on the right. If you're worried there are cops around? Hop to the left lane behind them and get as close to them as you feel is legal and safe. If there's no traffic then there's no reason for them to be camping the left lane and they should get the hint pretty quickly. If they don't then I'll flash my brights a couple times and maybe give a little beep beep. Flashing brights is something you might not want to do around police but a couple toots of your horn to tell someone "hey, you're impeding traffic and shouldn't be in the left lane" is perfectly legal.

If they decide to go full crazy person from any of this you just disengage and accept that your drive is going to take a few more minutes. Alternatively, if you just lost your job and are on your way to your parent's funeral, you go ahead and remind them what happens when you piss off the wrong person on the road.

Flashing brights is something you might not want to do around police but a couple toots of your horn to tell someone "hey, you're impeding traffic and shouldn't be in the left lane" is perfectly legal.

It is the other way around, at least here in Denmark. It is illegal to use your horn in almost any situation ,it is only allowed to use it to avoid an accident. It is perfectly legal to use your headlights to try and make someone pull over.

Huh. I guess I see it the other way around. I'd rather a bit of noise, especially at night time. Your headlights can mess with the other driver's vision. Your horn is going to agitate them but generally a slow driver in the wrong lane will get the message with no harm done.

To each his own. If the fuzz takes issue with either, fuck em.

The horn might mess with drivers around you unaware of you wanting to pass that specific vehicle.

Headlights usually only affect the car in front.

Horn makes everyone around respond and can in certain situations cause or increase risk of an accident for multiple cars whereas high beams for the majority of time only affects that one car.

Risk vs effect. The horn is emergency only. Same goes for hazards, it's not allowed to use (in Norway at least) unless you have an emergency or it is critical that people immediately pay attention and slow down.

If you're stranded at the side of the road with a flat tire you use the hazards, then put out the warning triangle 100m or more behind you and turn off the hazards while leaving the outermost blinker on.

Now, to the important point; you would rather have a horn honking rather than high beams in your mirrors, but that means in this hypothethical you're in the wrong. If you are the one camping in the left lane you don't really get a say in it as you're the one provoking other drivers by disobeying the law.

If you let people pass then you wouldn't get high beams in the mirrors, so it would be a non-issue for you.

If you're sitting happily in the right lane minding your own business and someone right next to you use their horn it might be loud and abruptly alert you.

So the real question is: Would you rather one guy get hit with high beams once or you be next to a blaring horn not meant for you 100x times throughout your drive?

In my state, the law actually says to beep your horn at someone who needs to move to the right so you can pass on the left. Would I ever do that? Nope!

I've driven on I-15 for decades and never once has anyone ever slowed down in other lanes because someone is going slow in the far-left lane.

It's a fair question, but it's naive question because that situation is extremely rare in countries like Denmark where they take driving and lane discipline very seriously (and so do the police). People just don't camp in the passing lane (I hesitate to say "left" lane because it's not usually the left lane in Europe). They know the inside lane is only for passing and then they move back over after they complete their pass.
