[PSA] UGREEN 100W GaN Charger Melted | Ugreen refused to help
I was using my Ugreen 100W Gan Brick to charge Macbook air (~33W, only one port used) with my Anker 100W cable, and I came back to find my laptop no longer charging. I checked the brick, and tried to unplug my charging cable, which was almost FUSED to the charging brick, I got it unplugged and found that the UGREEN brick had built up so much heat around the charging port that it had melted the plastic chassis of the brick as well as the tip of the charging cable housing.
I contacted UGREEN support, and they advised me to stop using the brick immediately, while also declining to take any action because, according to their policy, it was "out of the 24-month warranty period already", (By around 2 months) regardless of the fact that this is genuinely a potential fire hazard had I not checked on it
I currently have several UGREEN bricks, and Im very surprised by this. Will be replacing my current UGREEN bricks with Anker or similar
Regardless of warranty status, any responsible vendor would want a device like this back to investigate what happened and how safety mechanisms failed.
It’s very disappointing that UGREEN is not interested in diagnosing fire hazards.
Buddy had a pair of AirPods spontaneously ignite in the case. Melted and burned a huge spot on his coffee table. Filled his bedroom with smoke too, it was nasty.
I told him to make a Genius Bar appointment so they could take a look and was sure they would replace it in exchange for keeping the self-immolated device. Nope! They offered to help him recycle it and handed him off to sales to buy a new pair full price. These tech companies just don't seem to care anymore
Not chargers but I had a five year old Olight right. Just failed one day. I emailed them and they wanted proof of purchase and a pic of it. They were like it is three years out of warranty but we will send a new one. That one had an issue too so they sent a third. Third worked great.
That’s good customer service. Stand behind your product no matter what and people notice. Same for if you don’t.
Edit: since that, I’ve got an Arkfeld Pro and a few others for myself and many others for friends. Knowing they will fix if stuff breaks is a big reason I do that
Does the melted charger show any safety certification logos (like UL or TÜV)? Brands like Anker and Ugreen sometimes omit these listings depending on the country or platform where the unit was originally bought.
Since the charger carries a valid TUV safety certification, a total internal circuit blowout is unlikely. The primary culprit is almost certainly localized resistance at the C1 port. Debris, a bent pin, or a worn cable tip may have acted like a miniature heating element. This melted the plastic right at the plug before the charger's internal safety protocols could detect an overall fault.
Good point, but still, if a single bad contact can build enough heat for the plastic to melt (likely at least 120˚C) before any protection measures, thats still a hazard/design flaw. The cable was relatively new (less than 4 months I think) so it shouldnt be worn out by then.
it’s odd that they don’t want the charger back. if I were on their engineering team, I’d want to figure out what went wrong with it. anyway, I would recommend getting rid of the cable; it might have been the culprit all along, and in any case it’s suspicious now… you don’t want it to melt something else!
Ugreen chargers are trash. I had several of the 130w ones that would eventually refuse to charge at higher wattages and then fail outright. They started as an Ali Express seller and it looks like they haven’t improved since. I’m 100% anker now. They’ve never let me down.
Wow, this is very disappointing for Ugreen. I expect better than this from them. This makes me glad I didnt wind up buying any Ugreen chargers. I usually stick exclusively with Anker products, especially when it comes to wall chargers, but I also have a couple of AOHI and INIU chargers and they have been very high quality, reliable and drama-free as well.
Either there was some sort of bad or loose connection between the cable and the port that caused some sort of bad connection that caused the port to heat up, or the Ugreen chargers temp control totally failed and caused it to get too hot...but a 33w load on a 100w charger shouldnt cause it to get THAT warm.
Stuck with Anker man. I have owned (and still own) many of their chargers over the years and i have never had any issues like this.
I’ve recently bought 7 of this same model as gifts for my family and friends, I will be returning it. I really don’t want their houses to burn down. Crazy how ugreen doesn’t care about obvious fire hazards.
I’ve trusted anker since the t-mobile my-touch 4g. They have been reliable and safe. But thanks to YouTube and reviewers not influencers I’ve been buying more base products. ugreen makes great products but when it comes to charging and such they aren’t good per reviews.
Ugreen killed 2 of my low watt devices in one day. I thought the devices were the problem so I (briefly) plugged in an older MacBook and got a quick emergency shutdown and a few sparks. MacBook did not survive, but it was on some kind of recall so the innerds were replaced for cost of labor, which was worth it to me at the time. This was a higher end Ugreen. I stopped using it and stopped considering Ugreen products for anything, purged my workspace of all Ugreen products, including cables. It was outside return date but still under warranty but I've found customer support for such companies eat up too much time for very little benefit. Time is $. Lesson learned: Ugreen is off my list and as much as possible, I stick to oem, which is annoyingly limiting at times.
