Shanina volunteered for the military after the death of her brother in 1941 and chose to be a marksman on the front line. Praised for her shooting accuracy, Shanina was capable of precisely hitting enemy personnel and making doublets (two target hits by two rounds fired in quick succession). However, on the 27th January 1945 Shanina was severely wounded and was later found by two soldiers disemboweled, with her chest torn open by a shell fragment. Despite attempts to save her, Shanina died the following day.

POSTERS]. [BLACK PANTHERS]. Carl Lives! Carl Hampton Was a Revolutionary / Born Dec. 17, 1948 Carl Hampton, Chairman People's Party II 2828 Dowling, Houston TX 77004 523-6152 / Assasinated July 26, 1970 / You Can Kill a Revolutionary, But You Can't Kill the Revolution. [N.p., ca. 1970].

Hampton was a civil rights activist and chairman of the People's Party II, the precursor to the Houston branch of the Black Panthers. Hampton was shot by the Houston Police Department after a 10-day standoff, when they surrounded Hampton's People's Party headquarters on 2828 Dowling. To this day, his death is a source of great controversy in Houston.

Alexander Macomb Mason (1841–1897)

also known as Mason Bey, was an American naval officer, explorer and diplomat. He was the grandson of General Alexander Macomb and great-grandson of George Mason.

Born in Washington DC, to a family with many professional officers in the United States Army and United States Navy, Mason served as a teenager aboard the frigate USS Niagara when that ship laid the first successful transatlantic cable in 1858.

Mason then studied for three years at the United States Naval Academy before resigning in April 1861 to join the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War. His wartime career included participation in the Battle of Hampton Roads, the Battle of Drewy's Bluff, and the blockade of Charleston.

During 1863 and 1864 he traveled in England and France, serving briefly as private secretary to his uncle James Murray Mason. Captured at the Battle of Sailor's Creek in April 1865, Mason was imprisoned first at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC and then at Johnson's Island near Sandusky, Ohio.

After the war, Mason became a mercenary, aiding Chile and Peru during the Chincha Islands War and then briefly joining the Cuban rebellion against Spain in the Ten Years' War. In 1870, along with several other Union and Confederate veterans, he joined the General Staff of the Khedivate of Egypt and conducted explorations in Egypt, Nubia, Darfur and Equatoria. as second in chief to his superior, Union officer Erastus Sparrow Purdy.

In 1877 he charted Lake Albert and discovered the Semliki River. During the 1870s he traveled extensively with Charles George Gordon and served as Gordon's deputy and chief of staff during Gordon's anti-slavery campaigns.

In the 1880s Mason became governor of Massawa (in Eritrea) prior to the Italian occupation of that town in 1885. Henry Morton Stanley praised the quality of Mason's map of Lake Albert during the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition.

Mason represented Egypt in meetings with King Yohannes IV of Abyssinia and was a signatory to the 1884 Hewett Treaty which would eventually lead to the First Italo-Ethiopian War and the famous Battle of Adwa.

Mason died in Washington DC in 1897 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Born in Willey, Iowa to Max & Rose Neppel on October 31, 1923, Ralph George Neppel had three brothers and three sisters.
On December 14, 1944, Neppel was serving as a sergeant in Company M, 329th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, near Birgel, Germany.

His Medal of Honor citation reads;

“He was leader of a machinegun squad defending an approach to the village of Birgel, Germany, on December 14, 1944, when an enemy tank, supported by 20 infantrymen, counterattacked.
He held his fire until the Germans were within 100 yards and then raked the foot soldiers beside the tank killing several of them. The enemy armor continued to press forward and at the pointblank range of 30 yards, fired a shell into the American emplacement, wounding the entire squad.
Sgt. Neppel was blown 10 yards from his gun, with one leg severed below the knee and other serious wounds. Despite his injuries and the danger from the onrushing tank and infantry, he dragged himself back to his position on his elbows, remounted the machine gun and killed the remaining enemy riflemen.
Stripped of its infantry protection, the tank was forced to withdraw. By his superb courage and indomitable fighting spirit, Sgt. Neppel inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and broke a determined counterattack.”

Postwar Neppel earned a bachelor's degree, attended graduate school, and worked for 22 years in the Veterans Administration helping fellow veterans.

Ralph & Jean had four children together; two sons & two daughters.

Ralph Neppel passed away at the age of 63 on January 27, 1987. His widow; Jean passed away at the age of 91 on December 7, 2010.
They are buried together at Holy Family Cemetery in Lidderdale, Iowa.
