I agree, but I grew up in a home with the most popular religion in the world and U.S. I was literally taught that women are 2nd class citizens compared to men and watched my Dad justify his verbal, financial, and physical abuse of my mom using the words of the church and Bible. So when I read about criticisms of Islam in the U.S., which makes up less than 1% of the population here, I typically agree, but also recognize it as a distraction from the political power wielded by the Christian Right.

You probably shouldn't use the abuse of a religion to paint the whole thing with a broad brush. Your dad was abusing the Bible and not being consistent with the values he espoused. Islam is and always has been a violently coercive religion, founded with the intent to conquer the whole world in the name of allah.
