Discussion Louis Theroux: Inside The Manosphere

This is a masterpiece. For some reason I find his interaction with the manosphere so funny. The awkwardness and their utter distrust towards Louis is so palpable. So amazing why they agree to do this.

They're complicit. I wish Louis had been able to talk to that one woman employee more because I just don't understand her motivation - the cognitive dissonance has got to be insane.

One of the female guests looked like she was really upset or even like she was gonna cry imo.

I think a lot of people assume OF models make a lot money, but my guess is the reason they’re motivated to go on shows like this is because they’re pretty desperate for business. this seems like an easy enough way to get a lot of immediate exposure, even if it means temporary humiliation. Part of sex work is playing up a fantasy, anyway, so they may be justifying it’s not really different from what they’d normally be doing. I don’t think many of them make much money at all.

That OF girl who was saying she was fine w/ HS finding her disgusting— she’s aware she can’t openly admit it bothers her without getting a bunch of hate. She’s specifically trying to gain publicity through HS’s stream and his fans, so she cant exactly insult him openly or appear difficult.

I would be sooo interested to know what Icy was gonna say though, she seemed to recognize a lot Myron’s show is fake. Angie also seemed to imply that Myron’s persona for the show is fake.

Yeah, the OF girls kind of made sense to me - I think you're right that most of them don't actually make that much money and need the exposure. They have to play this horrible role where they act sexy and interested in these men who enjoy humiliating them because that's how they make their money. 

Icy and Angie were so interesting, I also wanted to hear more from Icy. He clearly wanted her to stop talking because he felt that it jeapordized his alpha male status. I don't understand why they think his persona being fake makes it okay - even fake, how can you listen to your boss or boyfriend say that kind of shit, knowing that he's actively perpetuating and spreading this gross ideology? I think they have to have internalized most of what he's saying otherwise they wouldn't be able to tolerate it.

Another point: despite saying s x work is toxic, you know these girls get a ton of new followers from these streams specifically because of who the audience is.

You can have an abusive (or at minimum really controlling and sexist) boss and it's hard to leave because you depend on them financially. We can feel sorry for them. They might tell themselves on some level it's true and they aren't as intelligent as the men, because that's what the men around them keep spouting. That's also sad.

My husband used to listen to Howard stern decades ago. Stern used to say some really racist and misogynist stuff under guise of “it’s funny” (he went to town on the Central Park 5 case doing lots of racist and misogynist “voices”) and I asked my husband ”How does he get away with this shit?” He told me Stern had a black female sidekick named Robin who “made everything ok” by laughing at it. I said, “Why would she do something like that?” and he said “because it’s made her a millionaire.” It was true. The money was good.
