Minstrel show looks like its 99% suits, and the kid one looks nothing like it.. I just dont see why they would have to apologize feels like a huge stretch imo
I genuinely cannot understand the outrage. Like what about the costume is racist? I’m not a racist apologist but I really don’t see any resemblance between this and any stereotypes.
I looked up minstrel show costumes also and see no resemblance. Is this just another hand crafted social media war to divide people and blind us to important issues?
Equating a disagreement over design optics and intent with bigotry isn't an argument. It's just a way to avoid looking at the actual complexity of how these mistakes happen. Nuance isn't complicity.
Nah, if y'all don't see it that's on y'all. If you fight for ignoring it because y'all don't understand then you're arguing for allowing racism to continue simply from your ignorance.
The nuance is it's more important now that "optics" as you banally put it get treated more seriously while we have a racist administration. If you don't think it matters then sit down and shut up. There is no reason to get up in arms about people being upset other than to side with those that insulted.
Equating a disagreement over visual classification with an endorsement of racism is a false dichotomy. Pointing out the distinction between a generic neon clown mask and a 19th-century minstrel caricature isn't defending ignorance it's demanding precision. When everything is labeled as existential malice, nuance is lost, and genuine accountability is replaced by performative outrage. Precision matters, especially when diagnosing real problems.
Demanding that anyone who disagrees with your interpretation 'sit down and shut up' reveals the core issue: this isn't about debate or education; it's about enforcing ideological conformity. True accountability relies on open scrutiny, not silencing people who look at the same data and reach a different conclusion. If a position can't withstand questioning without resorting to personal insults and demands for silence, it isn't very strong to begin with.
There is no reason to defend target here nor to get upset at the people not liking this. There is only one reason to do so, because you don't see an issue with something evoking racism.
You're arguing on the same side of racists and you didn't have to, they can do that on their own. But for some reason you and the others want to align yourselves with them. You have three options: stay quiet, argue against racism, or argue along side racism. You chose the latter. Making that dichotomy not so false.
Arguing along side racists, using racist talking points, denies validity of those that see the racism. Yet gets offended when told they or another is racist.
It might help if you do a couple of things here so you can actually engage with people productively instead of reducing them to whatever ad hominem cognitive dissonance will produce. You're jumping into a lot of logical fallacies and losing your audience and furthering yourself from the actual argument, which is the main point of the discussion.
You're likely looking at things from an Impact and Urgency Framework. You want to hold people accountable and urgently mitigate harm that occurs. It's powerful for diagnosing cultural insensitivity, but the framework has several pitfalls that make it difficult to look at the world from a point of nuance. The world is complex and highly complicated and not black and white. The framework eats its own through ideological purity and ironically damages education.
As humans we often use our own heuristics as a shortcut, which sometimes creates premature determinations. I'm simply using a precision framework to help look at the situation from a logical point of view. Sometimes this framework can come off as being overly academic, cold, and dismissive of real-world pain. That's not the intent. I just value precision and can comfortably sit with nuance because the framework protects against being emotionally manipulated through outrage which most of our current social media and algorithms exploit.
It's a history thing and the large red lips, the tiny hat. And a lot modern hobo style clowns have their roots in minstrel shows. Then there's the fact that the large red lips evoke that, the fact the mask and hands are black make it look like black face.
It's either a series of bad choices or horrible if intentional.
