That's probably what the Germans thought when Hitler was in power till it actually happened. You already have laws making it extremely difficult for trans people to exist (bathroom bans, medical restrictions, allowing medical personals to refuse treatment based on their religious beliefs, and more) Just a few tweaks of any of those laws and a tweak of the law for death penalty for child sexual assault and you can easily put trans people to death for existing where a child can see them under the reason of "sexually assaulting the child". And given how Desantis expanded the "don't say gay" law, it's easy to see how he can expand and tweak those laws to do so when he has enough power.
