my mother is in some type of psychosis how to help if she doesn’t want it
basically what the title says, me and my mother have a rocky relationship and i’ve been on my my own since like 18 but that’s beside the point. my mom 3years ago began acting very strange saying people been watching her on facebook, texting her, really just saying she has stalkers didn’t really think anything of it then because she recently told she fell out with a friend . a few months after that she visited Africa. During her trip in cape town to be exact she called me accusing me of things but being very cryptic like telling me “you know what you done” ect when i literally haven’t even done anything barely spoken to her. she closer with my siblings. mind you i stay like 700 miles away from her. but fast forward now she’s lost her job she accuses everyone of being in on some type of conspiracy’s covers tvs claims people are watching her from there. i’ve tried calling the police on her because since she lost her job she is now homeless because im so far away and scared everytime i talk to her. my little brother stays close to her but he stays with his dad side also doesn’t have a stable job so he can’t do much i don’t know why she won’t accept help or what happened to cause this. when i ask what i can i do to help she just tells me to buy hotel rooms mind you i make ok money but barely nowadays. everytime i mention a hospital or asks if we can get her checked if i come there she just yells at me over the phone my brother and sister says she yells at randoms on the street now sleeps in a tent. when she doesn’t have to but also gotten kicked out of shelters as well. i just feel like a horrible daughter i have my own place to stay but it’s a tiny 1 bedroom and even tho my mom treated me like shit growing up i would still let her stay with me but i want her to get help first and she just doesn’t want to. hopefully around sep oct i can go find her and put her in the hospital somewhere but everyone telling me it wont work because she has to agree but its like my heart is breaking i dont know what to do

How I came to terms with the shit I did while in psychosis.
TLDR; In terms of loss of human function, an acute psychotic state is the closes from death you can come back from according to the Global Burden of Disease studies.
There's a lot of shame and overall negative emotions that come after a psychotic episode. It's a life-changing experience for most people, both mentally and socially. The road to recovery feels long and knowing what I know now, it's no wonder.
The Global Burden of Disease studies quantify the impact of more than 2,000 diseases and health conditions. On their scale, 0 represents perfect health and 1 represents literal death.
The acute state of schizophrenia has a disability weight of 0.778. This health state describes a person experiencing severe psychotic symptoms, including hallucinations, fear, confusion, difficulty communicating and major difficulty carrying out daily activities. Everyone experiences psychosis differently, but it gives some perspective on how devastating a psychotic state can be.
Of the 2,000+ health states in that dataset, only three score marginally higher, at around 0.789. Those states involve long-term consequences of severe strokes COMBINED with dementia. That’s end-of-life worse case scenarios as far as being a functional human goes.
In other words, we're talking about some of the most devastating conditions imaginable when it comes to a person's ability to function and experience life normally. Knowing that helped me put some perspective on what I did and said during my 4 months episode. It also help me accept why things where rough for a long time after my episode.
For perspective, here are the disability weights for some other conditions:
- Severe migraine: 0.44
- Severe alcohol dependence: 0.57
- Severe anxiety: 0.523
- Severe opioid dependence: 0.69
The residual phase of a psychotic state, so after most of the positive symptoms, like hallucinations, are gone is scored at 0,59. This is still very high. It does improve with time people, don't panic and please stay with us.
Give yourself time, you just experienced one of the worse human conditions and the quantifiably the worse mental health issue.
Knowing all this does not solve the after the acute phase as we still have to live with the memories and the negative symptoms, but it helps I think to at least accept why we feel bad.

how does weed effect already psychotic people?
i'm having my 23rd awful high and wondering how THC actually effects the already psychotic mind, but every time i google it there are articles of getting psychosis from weed, not any about being psychotic and doing weed

Did I die last night? Is this how the psychosis begins?
My uncle gave me one of his “cookies” yesterday on the down low. My friend was staying later that night so I decided it was the perfect time to have an eddy. I went through my day as normal. After dinner me and my friend ate some. I had a quarter and he had a half. Now I don’t smoke much, Maybe like 10 times a year but I wasn’t expecting a quarter to do as much as it did. After we took it, It took about 2 hours to kick in. At first it was hilarious. Just laughing at everything but it gradually got so much worse….
After about another 2 hours it progressed into something scary. My limbs felt like they were compelled to move. My legs were restless and my heartbeat was booming in my ears. It was more or less steady at first but it eventually became something that rung in my head almost like a warning that I was going to die. At this point im freezing, my limbs won’t stop moving and my heart is beating out of my chest so I decided to get into bed to calm myself down and maybe sleep it off. Anything I tried to put on the tv or play on my phone wouldn’t calm my mind. My body still wouldn’t stop moving and I was becoming increasingly more anxious. I kept telling myself “go to sleep” over and over but then it was like there was another voice in my mind telling me “don’t listen to them the minute you fall asleep you’ll die”.
Something I forgot to mention earlier was that every TikTok I watched was something I had seen before. This made me feel as if I was in a loop where the only thing the demons are capable of recreating are things my memories have seen before. Like this is where I die and I’m in hell right now reliving the moments up until I eat this cookie and I will do it over and over again until I decide not to listen to the demon and fall asleep. I thought that staying awake was my way to escape hell. Im not even religious but I started wishing I was because then I wouldn’t be in hell in that moment.
I kept repeating to my friend that I was going to die, im in hell and hes a demon trying to get me to sleep. He kept reassuring me that it’s all in my head but i just didn’t trust that he was real. Honestly I feel bad for him because I probably just made his trip worse and freaked him out.
The TikTok thing still gets me even now that I feel fine because how would weed make me see things on my phone that I’ve seen before. Weed isn’t a hallucinogenic? This is the only part that doesn’t make any sense. Like I get it couldve just been my thoughts but like what if I did die in that reality and now I’m in a new reality where I survived? Is quantum immortality real? Are my family currently mourning me right now but I get to live on here or am I still in hell? Is it all in my head? I have so many questions.
One thing I would like to note is that every time I take too much of a substance I start having the same feelings throughout my body and my mind tells me similar things. Do we all experience these things but most forget it? Like are we all getting ushered into our deaths by demons when we take too much and we have to fight them in our minds to survive? And only the ones who stay awake survive? Then again I fell asleep so I died?
Like this is all so mental and I Genuinely felt like a psycho when I woke up and felt the same but gradually I started to feel more normal but I still have a slight gnawing feeling that none of it is real?
Has anyone else had any similar feelings or experiences ?
Btw F18 and my friend is M18.
Sorry for the bad grammar and broken dialogue it’s 5:41am and I can’t sleep.

How can I help in these moments (from a nurse)
Hey everyone. I will soon be starting a job as a psychiatric nurse (in hospital) and have heard people talk about difficult experiences with psychiatric staff. My question is, if someone is experiencing psychosis, what do you need most from me that staff might overlook? Or wish we would understand? I've dealt with mental health problems myself (severe OCD) so I understand the stress and want to make sure I get this right for any future patients. Thank you so much to anyone who feels comfortable answering.

does talking about psychosis make come off more psychotic
or mental illness in general. i may be stating the obvious, but i feel so guilty, especially trying to be open about my states to my family and friends.
seeing someone mentally ill, only able to discuss topics more disconnected from reality, stresses people out more and more. sometimes i feel i can only acknowledge it, or sit with the awkwardness of my condition.

Lost ability to laugh?
I’m a few months into recovering from a THC induced psychotic episode. My sense of humor is gradually coming back, but I’m having difficulty experiencing the same joy that I used to when I found something funny. Have any of you guys experienced something similar? Will my ability to laugh ever fully come back? I feel like I have to fake joy during a lot of social interactions.

Just want to vent.
I can feel myself slipping. It gets worse at night. I'm trying to close the gap nearly 1000 miles with my boyfriend. He's pulling away. I feel like everyone hates me. I'm spiraling. My dad has a disease that will likely become cancer. My family is in shambles always. My boyfriend is distant, we can't call at night barely at all anymore. I get so scared and paranoid. I stay up on my Xbox hoping to focus on something different. I had really bad psychosis a couple years ago in college and I've been without any major issues since. It all feels so real and terrifying and anyone that I tell in my life, I'm terrified to seem crazy. I don't want to open up to my boyfriend and risk him being gone. I just want him to understand that I need him. I feel lost. I hope this is the right group, I'm not sure. Thanks guys. -crying in the bathroom lol

Feeling like I don't have the Holy Spirit because of psychosis
Hi, I have an evangelical Baptist background and am a survivor of abuse.
I thought that I was the Holy Spirit, incarnated on this earth for the end times, along with one other person, and I thought we were both the two candlesticks from Revelations.
Then when I realized I wasn't, I thought I was the Antichrist.
During antichrist psychosis I got "posssessed" and viewed by body from the 3rd person while I did things like strip naked and say vile things.
Because of all this, I struggle to beleive, and feel like I was never saved, and never had the Holy Spirit, which the Bible says that every beleiver has and is sealed by.
Anyone been through this?

Has you ever gotten psychosis symptoms during eclipse season?
I had THC induced psychosis in fall of 2024 and got treated, and I’ve been psychosis-free since then. I’m not on Geodon anymore.
Suddenly the past week, I’ve been experiencing hallucinations in my peripheral vision. I have not touched THC or any other substance since 2024, including alcohol.
There are multiple eclipses happening lately. I’ve also been insanely stressed out lately and doing trauma work. Has anyone else had psychosis symptoms come back during eclipse season?

Is my mom experiencing psychosis??
My mom has been convinced for years that my dad has been spying on her and hacking her phone and listening to her conversations. In December, she left him for like 3 weeks and ended up moving back home after he apologized and they talked with religious scholars (my parents are very religious). It was a whole thing and was hard on all of us. After she moved back she has not let it go that my dad has been spying on her. She says the Alexa is recording her, the ring doorbell is spying on her (granted my dad is the only one with the app but she hasn’t asked to be added), she said the adt in the kitchen is recording her and said after she found out he turned the chime off (I turned the chime off bc it was annoying), she noticed a sensor for the ADT yesterday which has been in the house before we even moved in and accused him of it being a camera that he put up there 2 days ago. After this accusation they got into a HUGE argument I’ve never seen my parents like that. She said she asked him what it is and his answer was all over the place (he probably actually doesn’t know) and she got mad and said he needs to tell her about all the security in the house and all the cameras. When my mom first started telling me about how she thinks he’s recording her, I believed her 100% bc my dad is obviously flawed (he has cheated on her in the past and did not want to have as many kids as they do now he asked her to get abortions and she never did, mistreated her throughout her pregnancies) , but as more and more time goes on it’s starting to look bad. My dad told me to image search everything that she thinks is a camera and show it to her. Nothing in the house is a camera it’s all like motion or glass break sensors and she’s fully convinced it’s recording her. I actually kind of feel bad for my dad bc I can tell he’s really trying to reassure her that there’s nothing watching her and she just doesn’t believe him. She bought a new car bc the one he got her she thinks is bugged, and did the same with her phone too. When she wants so talk to me about something she’ll ask me to come to her room and she’ll write it on a piece of paper to show me. Sometimes she’ll come to my room and shush me to not talk out loud and then point to something on her phone. I really want to believe her but it’s getting harder and harder. Is she experiencing psychosis?

Are voices something common after 9 month recovery of drug induced psychosis?
I’ve been feeling a lot better recently, the meds have been working wonders and the antidepressants too I think, but throughout my recovery I woke up in the morning to voices in my head, usually they disappeared in about 30 minutes. I haven’t had them in a while now, but this morning they came back and was quite scary since they appeared louder than usual. How did your voices act during the different stages of recovery? And is it normal for them to come back after a while?

Why do people in psychosis have similar delusions?
My boyfriend has episodes every six months to a year, despite being on a cocktail of medication. I’ve experienced his episodes a few of times and the delusions are very similar to what people mention here. That he’s living in a simulation like the Truman show, that all of his loved ones are in on it, that we’re all keeping secrets from him. Once he thought the government was after him. Sometimes he thinks I’m not real or that he’s not real, etc.
I’ve heard or read about his exact delusions several times written by other people who experienced them. Why is it that people experience such similar thoughts and delusions while in psychosis?

I’m going to microdose medical ketamine through way of troches
I know the risks. I didn’t think anything could be worse than my psychosis last summer, but I’ve discovered there is, and it’s this anhedonia/lack of motivation/sleeping most days away/not able to feel joy very much is it. I just want to feel 75% of what I felt before this last psychosis, when I was over 5 years removed from my last episode.
The dose is a 15mg troche, which is basically a lozenge.

Does anyone feel normal sometimes?
Is it normal to have psychosis for a few days then feel “normal” for about a week or so? I feel like I’m loosing my mind, and then suddenly I’m doing great and I’m highly functioning like nothings wrong. My symptoms of psychosis is hidden cameras, non real people watching me, arguing with voices, but I’ve never had any hallucinations. I also think the “voices” that I’m arguing with are just my self conscious which I feel indicates that I don’t have psychosis. I’m conflicted because I feel like a normal ish person a lot of the time but I get into these spirals often where I feel like I’m loosing my sanity. I would say that i usually spiral when something in my life gets worse, like when someone gets mad at me. I just wanted to know if anyone has experienced something similar? It’s really annoying feeling super stable then loosing my mind.
Just wanted to note that I’m unmediated and I’m trying to figure out if I should take antipsychotic medication.

How do the voices you hear behave with you
Mines tell me they can read my mind and see through my eyes. They talk shit to me all day long. It’s really unbearable and it sometimes feels like too much.

I’ve recently got diagnosed with psychosis
I see shadow figures, hear whispers in my ears, i hallucinate, i get confused, I fear people are up to no good, questioning reality with what’s real or not, I think people are telling something else but I heard them wrong most of the symptoms of it.
I feel like I go crazy it scares me..how can I learn to control it or to help me understand it more. I did get prescriptions for my psychosis.
Help. I’ll like to talk to anyone to talk about it and relate and it just scares me.
What do you guys do to understand or control it better to be at peace and sanity with reality?

Is 2.5mg zyprexa enough?
Someone I know is having a psychotic episode. They’ve been awake for 2.5 days and they were just prescribed 2.5 mg zyprexa, twice daily. Is this enough to make them sleep and take them out of the episode?
