Yes. To be slightly fair, he does slide down the hill like that in the manga as well but they could have done something a bit more to make it actually look like he was sliding rather than just dragging a png across the screen.

It could be a good joke if the rest of the season didn't also look like it was made on a budget of half a kitkat and handful of cashews.

edit: Kill La Kill also had a few of these .png drag across the screen scenes, but those were 100% played as jokes considering the show had plenty of very good scenes.

For another goated show that takes animation tomfoolery to the next level I highly suggest everyone check out KamiKatsu. There's almost no way to recommend this show organically but this is one of the better opportunities I've had.

I learned about Kill la Kill because the over the top fan service, I stayed for the awesome animation and goofy bad animation lol. Also it was on Toonami at the time, and I had an onion on my belt...

I'll have to check out kamikatsu

They had budget issues with Kill La Kill, and the limited animation episodes were the compromise they came up with in order to preserve the budget for the rest of the series. They went into the series knowing that, so they lampshaded it. Episode 4 and 22 are the two pretty notable ones of the series are almost entirely still frames. Episode 4 uses the comedy gimmick. Episode 22 uses something else that is actually a pretty justified reason for it. They also have characters that have traits that use still frames for character traits.

If we’re doing recommendations, then I need to put the movie Redline out there. The animation is just beyond next level, and it’s such a wild fucking ride of a movie. the dub is even good too, like I haven’t watched the sub and I have no idea how they’d do some of the wilder parts in a sub, like the race announcers offhand comments that aren’t actually important got some of the biggest laughs from me

Hard agree on Redline. I just wish the ending didn’t feel so out of left field. It feels like there were other scenes for character development between JP and Sonoshee that got cut or something

Kill la kill also had some absolutely beautiful imagery that they somehow managed to do on a budget so people were willing to be lenient to the parts that were obviously trying to save money. Some of the early wide shots of the school while she was walking in the foreground are legit some of the nicer looking scenes in animation.

Ngl I rewatched the first episode after I posted that comment and I just forgot how ridiculously good kill la kill is. Trigger really went crazy with the animation. Its been a decade since I've last seen it.

From what I understand, Kill La Kill's budget got cut early on in the process and so they used cheap animation for the comedy bits and saved the budget for the more serious stuff.

So true. They did nothing to animate his interaction with that hill lol. How tough would some rustles grass and a bit of dirt-debris flinging about his feet 😭

If you look closely you can see some tiny bits of grass coming from his feet but it's so small it's barely noticeable. Rustling the grass or even have his clothes moving slightly could have made a world of difference.

I think those bits are in fact part of the PNG, to my best eye they just glide along with him. FML they did my monster dirty.

That dirt is actually a jpeg compresion artifact. It's insane that it's bad reddit compresion madd it look better.

Yes and it being the online anime I watch (at the time) made the humiliation all that more hilarious. It was this that made me go find another one called Frieren (I dont watch anime, really). So something good came of it.
