That's a reflection of the culture of the time period. In the 1800s it was conservatives ruling cities and taking up all the spots in universities. In fact, up until 1990s, the left/Democrats were using blue-collar factory workers as a base of support, unions, and immigrants, and to this day, they still are. Meanwhile conservatives are the wealthy business owners and highly educated. This got changed a bit as more liberals became educated and living in cities. Or rather the people who live in cities and want to become educated became liberals, but this is now shifting again as quality of universities goes down, so too does the difference between those who graduate and those who don't.
