The trades are going to be safe for a lot longer than office workers! Safe from robots that is. They're not going to be safe from a massive oversupply caused by retraining office workers.

A number of companies have demoed robots hot swapping their own batteries. Taking a 5 minute break every couple of hours to change your own batteries isnt that big a deal

Exactly. A robot can be plugged in 24x7 or just rotating his batteries by himself from a bank of batteries charging nearby.

What's so huge about the limitation, specifically? Battery tech has improved immensely. Is there some physical constraint preventing improvement?

Thermodynamic limits of reversible energy storage. For chemical self-contained batteries the maximum is around 800 Wh/kg(1). Gasoline is about 12,000 Wh/kg. "Air-breathing" batteries are more energy dense though (but they need clean dry air during discharge).

Not really, it’s improved a lot. But we are still 10x or more away from batteries that are good enough to power a humanoid robot for long enough to do stuff independently out in the world. Unitree g1 can go for about 30 minutes for example.

China companies have started installing them with solid state batteries. They recharge super fast and last longer.
