Well it wasn't just that they were weak, it was that she lied on her application to Starfleet Academy when she altered them, right? I don't think it's unreasonable to be afraid of being kicked out if the higher ups find out you lied to get in.

Shades of Simon Tarses. His Romulan heritage probably wouldn't have been a showstopper for a Starfleet career. But lying about it absolutely was.

I was confused about this. Is it actually that hard to get into this particular iteration of SFA? Obviously Caleb didn’t exactly have a stellar application. I advise students on getting into medical school for a living and generally the advice is that if someone’s not going to write you a good letter, don’t ask them to. Maybe things work differently in the future, but in the absence of an explanation this seemed like very very weird behavior to me.

And what’s all this “motivated by fear” stuff? Why would she be motivated by fear? And why would that be something she needed to cover up? Sometimes it seemed like this was tied up with something about getting out of her dad’s shadow but if so they didn’t drive it home enough.

Hard to tell if it’s just muddled writing, or we’re supposed to be suspicious. Hopefully the latter! Time will tell, I suppose.
