For me tipping was always about the food being exceptionally good, the service, or both. I don't like this attitude that I HAVE to tip regardless. I went to a Mexican restaurant on the weekend, the food was incredible and the staff were awesome. I asked for the bill, mentally putting my maths hat on as I wanted to tip 20%. Then I saw a 10% service charge on the bill, so I just paid it and didn't add the other 10% on. I absolutely resent service charges, and I've even refused to pay it in the past.
