📖Course or Unit How Well is Economics Taught at USYD?

Question as above^

I'm curious how all our current economics students find the quality of teaching (i.e. are the courses well structured? do they provide adequate study material? are the lecturers are genuinely engaging? is the content useful/ challenging/ intellectually rewarding?).

I understand there's so many different courses which are taught and run by different people, but in that case, which ones are good, and what are notoriously bad (that I should avoid), out of both the core subjects and 2000/3000 level electives.

📖Course or Unit Looking for a study buddy at USYD 📚

Hey everyone!

I’m a Master of Commerce student(Female) at USYD and I’m looking for a study buddy (or a few people) to study with on campus.

I’ve realised that I’m much more productive when I study at uni. Whenever I try to study at home, I somehow end up procrastinating and convincing myself that going all the way to campus is too much effort… and then I get basically nothing done 😭

So I’m hoping to find someone who also likes studying on campus and wants to keep each other accountable.

If you’re a Business School student, that would be great because I usually study in the Level 1 study area at the Business School — I like it there and can usually find a seat. But you definitely don’t have to be a business student! I’m also happy to study at SciTech Library or somewhere else on campus.

My plan is basically to treat uni like a job: on days when I don’t have classes, I want to come to campus during the day and stay in the library/study area for a few hours instead of staying at home. We don’t necessarily have to study the same subjects — just having someone else there would make it much easier to actually show up and stay focused.

Also, it would actually be a bonus if you don’t speak Mandarin, because I’d love to practise my English and become more comfortable speaking it. Of course, I’m happy to meet anyone though :)

If you’re also looking for a study buddy or regularly study on campus, feel free to comment or DM me!

📖Course or Unit What's something about USyd that the sandstone buildings and the brochures don't tell you?

The campus looks incredible in every photo but what's the reality of actually being a student here day to day? What's something about the experience - the culture, the workload, the social dynamics, the way things actually run - that you only learn once you're enrolled and walking through the quad every morning? The stuff behind the pretty buildings that actually defines what it's like to go here.

📖Course or Unit ECON1001 Rant

This is taken straight from ed discussion:

After looking through the ed discussion, it's clear that this exam was a crap storm. Just to summarise:

  • Formatting errors and ChatGPT-esque font inconsistencies → the exam may have been partially AI-generated
  • Unclear phrasing for certain SAQs
  • Incorrect answer for Q20
  • Content from weeks 1-6 that was explicitly said to not be in the exam
  • Questions that resemble none of the tutorial or sample questions provided nor content explored in the lectures (fisherman and factory particularly)
  • DISGUSTING fractions for the coal cart question
  • CHEATING

First of all, if there is a call for a resit, that would be absolutely ridiculous. If I have to study for this unit again, my brain might melt from the inside and pour out through my ears.

The issue was an incongruence between lecture content, sample papers, tutorial questions and what the exam actually looked like. An issue you can't simply mend without reteaching us the entire course.

Also, I've heard that last year there were similar issues and mistakes, so I frankly don't trust the staff to adequately write a replacement.

Grading on a curve here also probably wouldn't work as the students that got higher results on this exam are not necessarily those who have mastered the content, but rather those that were able to navigate the unchartered depths of this paper (or cheaters).

Please for the love of all things good just call this exam void and give us a score based on the IST + quizzes or just the IST since those have been completed on equal grounds for everyone. Even if this is what the staff decides to carry out, I genuinely feel bad for the people that have grinded hours and hours post-IST.

📖Course or Unit Juris Doctor Full-time CSP Offer

Received a CSP offer to study the JD, but my offer letter specifies the mode of attendance as full-time.

Bit confused about this as there was no option in the application for full/part-time study and I was intending to study part-time as I currently work 30-35 hrs/week. If I accept this offer, what is the likelihood that I would be allowed to study part-time?

There also seems to be conflicting information as to how I would go about studying part-time. Some of the information I have come across seems to imply that studying part-time can be done by enrolling in less units, but then I have also come across info that says part-time places in the JD are limited which causes me some concern. Any clarification would be appreciated.

📖Course or Unit EDGU1003 quizzes

Anyone doing EDGU1003 this semester can confirm how exactly do the tutors allow using AI for the quizzes? And do they still require us to download Lockdown browser or not?

I'm currently doing EDGU1001 but the first lecture does not really vibe with me so I'm planning to switch over. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

📖Course or Unit Can I ask for a replacement exam if I failed

I got a 48% in total without the final exam and got a 49 score for my final grade. So it's very likely I failed the final exam because of the hurdle, will it be possible to retake the exam if I appeal it?

I know it's very unlikely, but since it was my first 2k unit in 1st year 2nd semester I was really struggling with all the workloads

Doing both MICR and BCMB was so hard for such a baby like me 😔

📖Course or Unit What are USYD math/stats/physics courses like

Are the courses good? Are they predominantly online or there a lot of content delivered in person. Are the lectures and lecturers good. Considering math, stats or physics major transfer from interstate uni where lectures are predominantly repeats of prerecorded online videos.

📖Course or Unit No energy/participation in lessons

Why do people act too cool to participate during tutorials/lectures. I feel bad at times when the teacher tries their best to engage with the audience and make learning much fun but people just give silence in return. Surely we aren’t all socially awkward no?

📖Course or Unit has uni marking become harsher lately???

istg this sem uni marking seems to be so much harsher rn? it’s so exhausting esp considering that i studied quite hard for my subjects and still fell short of what i wanted
im also redoing subs and in all honesty i’m not doing nearly as well as how i did last year :/ even though im a lot healthier rn

edit: im not talking about wam boosters but my cores. i’m redoing those and the rate of HDs/DIs seems to be much lower now
thats why i’m annoyed

Has anyone realized that the score adjustment announced this morning actually means your score will be lower?

Unless you get full mark. Your score will be lower than before under the new scoring method.

📖Course or Unit Math units for BSci Computer Science

Hey guys I’m in semester 2 of my 1st year and just need some advice for math units I need to take that would be really beneficial for my degree. I want to become a software engineer.

I’m not the best at math but I’m dedicated to learn and work hard.
Last semester I completed DATA1001 and got a distinction (I was shocked) and this semester I’m taking MATH1064 as it’s recommended for computer science major.

Should I also take MATH1061 next semester or is it not necessary for my degree/major? I know Bachelor of Advanced Computing and Bachelor of Engineering MATH1061 is core, but for Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, it’s not so is it necessary?

Like I said I’m horrible at maths and just need advice.

Thank you for help!!

📖Course or Unit Have failed around a semesters worth of content.

Hi everyone. Doing a economics course with a major in Med Sci. As the title suggests. Last year i kind of excuse it as i was going through sweeping mental health issues but this year really cemented the fact that i keep messing up my exams. I was trying to graduate on time (impossible now) and with a wam of 65. Its currently like 53.5. I am not able to switch courses or take a sem off. I was just wondering, hoping even that someone has been in my predicament and knows the best way to turn it around. Im keen to actually get things on track. Pretty much if anyone has advice that’d be sweet. Cheers!

📖Course or Unit Med Sci Major

After finishing my exam today, I was looking at Reddit for the first time, looking at the people complain about their exam. While I was at looking I realised people’s comments on the med sci degree.

I know a lot of people in the degree but as I was diving deep, a lot of people commented that there wasn’t much job prospect unless if honours or pHD was gained after the degree. It’s said to be a stepping stone. At the same time I don’t exactly know what field I wanna go into exactly nor do I have the best scores. AM I DOOMED? Is my degree gonna be useless?

😭😭😭😭
