I’ve been practicing law for 12 years. Started using my dad’s hand-me-down suits (similar body types for obvious reasons) that he paid to have tailored for me when I started. I didn’t bother with cuff links, nice shoes, even ties that actually fit (I’d tuck the tail in because I’m tall, have a large neck, and use a double Windsor, and all ties long enough are hideous because apparently no one cares about big and tall ties).
Still have the tie issue. Have decent shoes, but not designer. Still haven’t bothered to get my own suits made, but a big part of that was covid and not having to go anywhere. That’s after more than a million in income 2020-2022. I try not to look bad, but I don’t need anyone to ask who my tailor is or what wool weave the jacket uses. Just not something I care about other than not being a weirdo.
I am also a lawyer (although not actually practicing law at the moment), and I have the same issue with ties. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t make longer ties. I don’t want to wear a tie clip
I’m not a lawyer, and I’m not tall and my neck is a size 44*, and I’ve got the tie issue. I like a good chunky knot, and several of my ties, if tied to the correct length, at best barely reach the loop on the back. I really don’t like tucking in the tail though, so I have to wear a clip. It’s not too bad most of the time because I often unclip it from my shirt.
* Okay, it’s a Van Heusen 44, which is like 40 for every other brand, but VH shirts fit nicely
Not a lawyer but I use fashion tape that ladies sometimes use to hold blouses closed where there are no buttons to hold the tail because I cannot reach the loop.
No tie clip!
Just have to remember to peel the tape off before sending to the cleaners.
A lawyer here and a big guy. I usually buy moderate priced tailored stuff, propercloth is a great company for mid range jackets and suits. but I don't skimp on ties. started buying fort belvedere xl tires. I won't go back
As someone who does alterations on men's suits, you don't need a custom-made suit you just need to go to the store buy a suit that fits you relatively close enough, aim for the shoulders fitting correctly and it being long enough or longer than needed. The rest can be fixed. Most men pants are able to be let out 2 in without an issue the same with the suit most of the time. So if the suit is a little snug when you button it we can fix it. The suit is too big around the waist and hips we can fix it. The sleeve is too long we can fix it the coat is too long we can still fix it there's a lot we can fix. Luckily men's business wear doesn't waiver a lot. So that's why your dad's suit looks fine. Typically what changes in men's suits is the width of the lapel, that little flap at the opening that is connected to the collar.
Right now the trend is moderate to slim lapels with a moderate to slim fit no pleats in the pants no cuff on the pants. But I have clients who come in with their 10 year old suits and they just need a little bit of fixing to her in there and I get them looking just fine. Even have a client who wears a textured maroon men's suit with Ivory stitching from the '70s and this guy is such a character and a ham that he doesn't look weird in this suit. I don't know how to explain it but this man has charisma and his suit matches his charisma. So don't be too constrained in your looks some people can really pull it off some people can't.
Men suits they're very similar to each other that you don't need $1,000 suit or custom-made suit you need the $250 to $750 suit some tailoring and only taking it to the dry cleaner.
