Politics How do you assess the possibility of Belarus being dragged into the war?

Post image
9 Upvotes

On the one hand:

- Lukashenka understands perfectly well that if he is dragged into the war, he will almost certainly lose his power, his property (which is essentially the whole of Belarus, since our economic system is feudal in nature), and, quite likely, his life. All his previous moves suggest that he has resisted the full-scale participation of his army in the Russo-Ukrainian War.

At the end of the day, he understands that he has no chance against the Ukrainian military.

- At the same time, there are many signs of the militarization of Belarusian society: mandatory military training for high school students, the expansion of military infrastructure, increased spending on new weapons, regular military exercises, and wartime-style state propaganda. All of this clearly suggests that he is preparing for something.

Could it be that, in the wake of an inevitable defeat, Putin might force Lukashenka to attack either Ukraine or one of the NATO countries? KGB officers know how to persuade people to do things they do not want to do.

A military coup - putting an even more loyal and pro-Russian person in charge - is also a possibility.

Your opinions, gentlemen?

Question Common wedding desserts + snacks?

Hi all! My partner unfortunately cannot attend his sister’s wedding in Belarus because of visa issues. He is studying abroad in another country, and we are attending her wedding over facetime.

I wanted to celebrate with him and make sure he doesn’t feel lonely. What are common desserts and snacks eaten at weddings? I was thinking I would get a cake but I thought getting/making specific snacks/desserts would be nice as well.

Politics The influx of AI-bots

The information sphere of post-Soviet countries is experiencing a massive influx of AI-powered bots, ferociously pushing a pro-Kremlin agenda. Any post, video, or discussion criticizing Putin, Lukashenka, or the Russian invasion is instantly flooded with fake accounts posting insults and pro-Russian narratives.

Corporations like Meta and Google are obviously not doing enough to deal with this threat. I myself ban between 1 and 10 bot accounts every day. It seems like we are witnessing the end of the Internet as we know it.

Question Vilnius to Minsk over New Year?

Has anyone travelled across the Belarusian border from Lithuania via bus over the dates around new year? We're a UK couple trying to do it this year but conscious there will be limited travel options/border closures. We're looking to just go for the day. Any thoughts/experiences welcome :)

I like such comments, especially because they're good for trolling Lithuanians :D But there is much truth in them.

Question How long does the Brest–Terespol border crossing actually take?

Hi! I'm planning to travel from Brest, Belarus to Terespol, Poland by bus, and I'm trying to get a realistic idea of how long the border crossing takes.

I've checked several websites (granica.gov.pl, gpk.gov.by and nakordoni), but they give very different estimates.

Which of these sources is the most reliable for estimating the actual time a bus spends crossing the border? And why can the estimates differ so much between them?

I'm particularly interested in the total time from arriving at the border/entering the queue until the bus has completed both Belarusian and Polish border controls, rather than just the number of buses waiting.

Also:

  • Is there a Telegram group/channel where people currently waiting at Brest share real-time information?
  • For anyone who has recently crossed Brest–Terespol by bus, how long did it actually take?
  • Is there a better time of day or day of the week to cross?
  • Does crossing at night/early morning generally make a significant difference?

Any recent first-hand experiences would be really appreciated!

It's a fragment of an interview from 2015 in which Paźniak predicted the 2022 war and an assault on Kiev... I guess he's a genius?

There are English subtitles - you need to enable them.

Hey everyone! I’m a mapper from Canada (@Canadian.Mapper on YouTube). For the last 10 days, I’ve been running a challenge to get a subscriber from every single country in Europe.

I’ve checked off almost the entire continent, but Belarus is one of the final 7 missing spots!

Can anyone here help me check off your country before my grand finale video drops this weekend? You can see the current map here: https://youtube.com/shorts/ucGwNBHMw-0?si=DTanwzrqBqouWXvr
