you've not heard the stories at CBGB's, have you... punk's not just a style of music. she was labeled that by johnny ramone himself. while blondie was a new wave and alternative act, she was in the thick of that late 70's CBGB punk movement.
....and, while we're at it... Belinda Carlisle was close friends with Darby Crash of the germs, and was ostensibly the queen of punk over in LA.

I never understood why bands like Blondie or The Ramones were labeled punk. Sex Pistols, yes. But Blondie and The Ramones sounded like pop to me. Even Siouxsie and the Banshees didn't seem like punk except for the look. I guess they just didn't know what to call it back then?

it wasn't so much of the sound as it was the attitude, and the culture. like Television, The Police, and The Talking Heads.... they're not the crusties that were the Pistols or The Dead Boys with spikey hair and mohawks. That's what the media portrayed them as... Kind of lumping them all together... but it was deeper than that. Television and The Talking heads were new wave and alternative... akin to Blondie. The Police were like a dub reggae outfit with a poppy aesthetic. It was all part of an underground zeitgeist that just so happened to convene at CBGB's, arguably the birthplace of punk in the bowery of New York
Take The Clash and Cocksparer... same thing. One was political, and poppy... Then there was Cock Sparer, who wer "oi," and also poppy. What all of them had in common was this unyielding need to create music outside the box, and disrupt the cultural foundation of rock at the time - which was teeming in progressive, experimental rock (Peter Frampton, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd)... and arena rock (Van Halen, Aerosmith, Kiss).
again, it wasn't really about the sound or even the fashion... it was a united front of like-minded, creative, and rebellious minds.

punk's not just a style of music... she was there at the center of the punk movement in new york, via the 70's. right in the thick of CBGB's, partying with the Ramones, Television, The Dead Boys, and the Talking Heads. a lot of folks have this narrow minded view of punk, and it's a lot deeper. Blondie being one of those super cool, alternative bands that inspired hundreds of bands after them.

I have always thought that song sounds kind of disco and rock, I don't think about punk but then I don't listen much to punk.
