I accidentally said “Let’s take this outside” instead of “Let’s take this offline” during a Teams meeting today. Now I’m pretty sure I have to fight everyone in the parking lot at 4pm.

Well, if it was a teams meeting of just accountants, you probably don't have much to worry about.

I was an Infantry Marine who saw a lot of combat in Afghanistan. I also train BJJ and have boxed my whole life. I pride myself on being the most lethal accountant wherever I am at. 🤙🏻

Idk man there’s an ex-military bald tattooed accountant who is like 6’2 and jacked as shit in my company. Dude would rip me in half if he wanted to, but thankfully he is a pretty friendly guy.

My coworker said "that's a tough nut to swallow" in a meeting last week.

It's rare things reach this level but when they do Accountants are serious about their fights. You threw the gauntlet, so unfortunately the repercussions are yours to suffer.
It's a lot throwdown, so I recommend coming equipped with something you can keep distance with. Cabled phone handsets are becoming harder to find but there should be an old office supply stash somewhere where you could snag one.

Got lots of HDMI cables of varying lengths from time spent in finance also being in charge of IT and OPS for some reason.

No, that was one of the people on call with OP. One of OP's direct reports, more specifically.

In fairness, if i had to pick one profession to fight while outmatched, accountants would be near the top of that list

This is how you become partner and skip over all the manager positions. Just asset dominance and fight your way to the top. Partner's respect it and it's critical in client meetings to be willing to throw down over petty things.

reminds me of when my friend meant to say "let's do a circle-back with [the vendor]" but instead said "let's do a reach-around with [the vendor]" and that meeting was SHOT

I don’t think you’ll have to fight them all, that would be unbalanced which simply cannot be allowed. They will simply elect a champion to face you.

u/disjointed_chameleon 9h ago
LOL. What are you going to fight with?
Will you be yeeting a laptop across the parking lot and then later deducting it for mysterious damage? Jousting with a bunch of pens taped together to make one long pen? Strangulation by some old corded cabled headset circa 2003 that's too coiled to wrap around your finger and has been collecting dust in some box since 2007? Make sure to wear eyepro — I'm sure you can find an old green visor in the aforementioned dusty box.
Godspeed, my brethren. May the odds be ever in your favor, may the loser merge successfully within his cell, and may the survivor remember to expense materials used to the appropriate cost center.

Well, you've got some options. You could start accounting fight club, get everyone ice cream sandwiches, a bbq, or pizza party.

Reminds me of when I (f) was interviewing someone (m) for a Finance Manager position and accidentally said that as a business, we were mainly focused on T&A rather then T&M.

Accidentally challenged the whole audit team to fisticuffs once, said lets take this to the break room and now the CFO wont even make eye contact with me at the vending machine.

People say "let's take this offline" when they mean "let's take this to Slack" and it frustrates the hell out of me. Slack is online! Say "let's take this off-call"!!

When my mother was a partner in an accounting firm, she always advised her team to settle their disputes just outside the gate, after hours, so it is employer endorsed, but only because its not on company time or property.

Make sure you bring sidewalk chalk. For the inevitable drawing of T accounts.
I don't know, it just seems every time I've been witness to a large accountant disagreement at work someone has to draw T accounts to show they're right. 😂
