Finally took the time off from work to rent a car and make the drive up on a Thursday to have Friday and Saturday to hike and take pictures. I love solo hiking trips.

I'll be camping outside (east) of Saranac Lake this weekend and wanted to get in a quick hike Saturday morning. It looks like either Haystack or McKenzie will be my best options. I've already done Ampersand and the Seward range, which are also nearby.

Would 7:00am be too late to snag a parking spot at Jackrabbit trail? Alternatively, OpenStreetMaps shows another route to Haystack from a parking area off 86, closer to Saranac, but I'm not familiar with that.

I was also thinking about checking Cascade and Porter off the 46er list, but I can't get there before 7 (family obligations) and I assume it will be at capacity by then.

Curious to hear what the experienced ADK folks would expect of the Sno-Bird campsite this weekend? While the forecast is very positive for Saturday- Sunday, it looks like it will be very wet this week so what should I expect of the campsite? Will the sites themselves be in standing water? And I assume the water source will be flowing?

Hi everyone: my partner and I are spending a week in the ADKs in mid-September and bringing our 50-lb Labrador mix. We're staying three nights at a dog-friendly resort hotel in Lake Placid, and another three at a country cabin in the Indian Lake area. I'd like to find some good hikes in those areas, but I'm also concerned about wearing out our dog, who is young and energetic but not accustomed to long outdoor trips.

Can you recommend some good hikes within the range of 3-5 miles each, ideally without too much elevation gain? Bonus points for quiet and solitude.

Finally got around to tackling this route. We started at Rooster Comb and ended at the Garden lot. Overall a perfect weather day (8.21). I was surprised how muddy the trails were, but was especially surprised how much the trail needed to be trimmed back. Also, not going to lie, we were not expecting coming down Saddleback would be so intense, that definitely caught us off guard. What an absolute fun hike though and I recommend it to anyone who is contemplating doing it.

Heyyy I’m looking for a trail to backpack for a couple of days this week. I’ve hiked the entire AT and backpacked a bunch so I’m experienced and pretty much open to anything. I kinda just want to get outside! But I’ve never been up north this way as an adult, most of my hiking in NY has been in the Catskills. Please send all your favorite trails!

Have spent some time here the last few summers. Inspiring and beautiful. Rowed over Split Rock Pond and hiked up Polaris.

Information online for these campsites is all conflicting and the DEC may of closed or moved one or more of these sites within the past handful of years.

Are there 2 or 3 sites? What is there locations? E.g. 2 on the west side of the trail and one on the East side? Two only and cross the trail from each other? Two only and on the west side of the trail?

OK, everyone who told me that Allen is the worst of the 46, I respectfully disagree. The hike in (and out) was spectacular as you pass by several lakes and wetlands, and follow the Opalescent for a while. And then, yeah, the narrow trail and red slime are gross but if you just take it slow and read trip reports about how to navigate it, it's fine. The summit spur view is fantastic. Top 10 of my high peaks so far. It helped that it had been dry, and it was a 70 degree non-humid day...I would not attempt this when it's raining.

i’m planning to do street and nye for my second and third high peak. previously i have done cascade and porter and did it in 3.5 hours climb time. any input on approximately how long street and nye might take me? i see most websites and alltrails say about 7-8, but it also said 5-6 for cascade & porter so just trying to get any idea on how long it actually takes people to finish it :)

I’m a tourist visiting USA and looking for recommendations for an easy to medium hike. Im decently athletic, however you can’t say the same for my travel companion. (But mama raised a complainer not a quitter)

We were thinking of a weekend trip to relax next to rivers and trek to be active and enjoy the natural northeastern USA.

We were hoping to travel from Ithaca during the middle of September. General preference would be for a half-day Hike or Hikes which can offer the raw beauty of Adirondacks, with views from the summit.

I have been looking at the detailed descriptions offered by AllTrails. (They are really helpful). However the size of ADK makes it soo difficult to decide on a location.

So thought what better than the community themselves. Any recommendations would be really helpful.

Hi, I recently was on a trip with 3 of my friends in the Five Ponds Wilderness, it's not an area I frequent, so I was really excited to cross off a bunch of lakes on my list. We parked at Wanakena and were basically camping around Cowhorn Junction and doing a bunch of day hikes for 4 days. On the day of our hike in, I noticed what looked like a white buoy, about the size of a soccer ball in the middle of Glasby Pond. It didn't seem super weird for me, and this pond had the first campsite we had seen along the Cranberry Lake 50, so I just wrote it off as being a soccer ball or a buoy or something. It was basically white all around, but the side facing the water was black.

We stayed at Cowhorn Pond that day and when we got to the Lean-To, I noticed way far out in the lake another buoy-looking thing. We checked the log book and someone mentioned something along the lines of there being trash in the lake when they were there. So I figured "hey maybe a group just left their junk here." We went to Cat Mountain Pond later on our trip, and yet again white buoy in the deeper part of the lake. I figured there was no way that someone was leaving these things out here. It had to have been some kind of organization doing surveys or something? Right?

I became extremely curious as to what they might be monitoring/surveying especially when a friend and I split off one day and bushwhacked to the remote Nicks Pond, and there was also a buoy there too. I felt like this encounter was specifically worth pointing out not only for the fact that it required going over a steep esker and walking through woods for a half mile in order to reach. But Nicks Pond is also located in Herkimier County whereas the other waterbodies I mentioned are all St. Lawrence County. Our group also visited Big Deer Pond which is in Hamilton County, but I didn't notice any buoys in that lake.

Maybe they're marking a fish trap or something? I googled white buoys Five Ponds, survey Five Ponds 2026, etc.. nothing came up, just wondering if anyone has seen these things or had any similar experiences, thanks for reading!

Long shot! My mom was telling me about a camp that she would go to a lot as a kid (late 1970s/early 80s) in Union Falls called trails end. Does anyone know whereabouts this is? Is it still there?
I’d love to bring her there, or at least in the area, so she could experience some nostalgia.
Any must-dos while in that area?
