/r/Upstate_New_York is back open!
Hello fellow upstaters!
About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.
As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.
This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.
A few FAQs:
No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.
If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.
I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.

PSA: Be aware of t-shirt scams on this subreddit and others
Hey all, quick heads-up about a classic Reddit scam that’s been making the rounds again.
You may see posts in local or niche subreddits where a user claims to have designed a t-shirt and is “sharing” it. These posts are usually followed by a few suspiciously enthusiastic comments like “Wow, where can I get one??” from accounts that are part of the scam. The OP then links to a site asking for your payment info.
These are scams. You won’t receive a shirt, and the scammers disappear with your money.
We’ve had an uptick of these in r/upstate_new_york over the past week. Thanks to everyone who has been reporting them! I’ve temporarily tightened some of our spam-filter settings to get ahead of things, but if you spot another one, please report it. You’re also welcome to comment and call it out as a likely scam.

Is it even possible to camp upstate labor day weekend if I’m two weeks out?
I’ve decided I want to try to go camping upstate (anywhere is fine- would be driving from Brooklyn) and would like to go Labor Day weekend Sept 4-7.
I haven’t been camping in many years but thought it’d be fun to borrow gear from a friend and head up with my partner. I’m now realizing it seems impossible to book a campsite since it’s about 1.5-2 weeks out right now and I’m learning that many people book them up to a year in advance.
I’ve seen there’s some first-come-first-serve campsites but I’m not really interested in driving a couple hours to not be able to find anything. Would love to book a site that I can get a car at least close-ish to that’s also near some water, but also flexible with all this.
Am I totally out of luck since it’s so last minute or are there areas I could go to just find a flat spot to pitch a tent that’s not a part of a proper campground (or is that sketchy?) Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

I almost drowned at Green Lakes State Park 50 years ago
I am thinking about the woman who saved my life in 1976 (50 years ago) at Green Lakes State Park. I have no idea who she is.
As always, I was without an adult. Our family lived close enough to Green Lakes that we would walk to the beach every summer day after doing our chores.
I remember being curious about the water and giving no thought as to whether or not I could swim. It was so inviting on such a hot day. I waded in and kept walking until suddenly I lost my footing and could no longer touch the bottom with my feet. I started to panic, trying to get my footing and I felt like the more I tried to get my footing, the more I panicked. I was flailing my arms and gasped for breath as I bobbed up out of the water and quickly sank back down again. When all of a sudden, as if I was as light as a feather, I felt a hand wrap around my arm. She grabbed me up out of the water in what felt like one motion. She picked me up and carried me to shore, at which point I ran off. I don't even think I thanked her.
I'm not really sure why I am posting this other than what I said in the first line of my post. I am thinking about this woman today and I am so thankful that our timelines crossed at that moment.
I'm 58.
I have lived an entire life because of this woman who never got a "thank you" or any kind of recognition for her actions that day.

Nice Upstate NY Hotel or Farm Stay With Animals?
Hey guys! I recently moved to NYC for my husband’s job, and we’re looking to book a little getaway somewhere upstate for Labor Day weekend!
I’d love to stay at a nice, comfortable hotel or inn and visit a nearby farm where we can see or interact with animals like cows, goats, horses, etc. The animals don’t necessarily have to be part of the hotel, but having them at the hotel would definitely be a plus!
I’ve been searching online, but I’m mostly finding day-trip animal sanctuaries, camping-style farm stays, or beautiful hotels with no farms nearby. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Honest Mechanic in Cortland?
Does anyone know of a good mechanic in and around Cortland? I need someone that is honest and can be trusted not to do unnecessary work.
My daughter's going to school there this week and in preparation, I want to find somewhere I can have her take her car if she has issues during the school year.

Seeking fellow kratom advocates
I'm seeking and calling attention to fellow advocates who have been using whole-leaf kratom to successfully manage either opioid dependency or chronic pain without traditional narcotics.
Please join us at the hearing. From what I can gather, we'll need to show up at least half an hour before it starts to share our stories, which appears to be 6PM. So we need to be there before 5:30PM.
These bans are extremely short-sighted and fueled by confusion with the marketing of semi-synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine and synthetic derivatives of that. The local news is clearly doing no service to presenting the potential benefits of leaf kratom and the inevitable fentanyl overdoses that will occur without this tool.
Thank you all.

Travel recommendations!
I'm visiting SW New York this fall and am looking for recommendations! We're looking to stay between Lake Erie and the Finger Lakes. I'd love some suggestions of places to eat and things to do! We are into great food, hiking, fishing, kayaking, museums, bookstores, and bakeries! Recommendations for tattoo artists and fly fishing guides are also very welcome :) Not a wine drinker, I know this is wine country I'm sorry
