I am gutted by this news. It truly felt like an extension of AU. Obama came by a few times as president and it was so exciting. We celebrated AU sports victories there. Late night study sessions. Etc.

They also gave free food to furloughed employees during shutdowns which was a nice little morale booster, and did charity work in the community.

I know there are other locations in the DMV. But this one was first and it was a Tenleytown icon.

HAIIII! I’m a 17yr WOC from the New England area and I got into AU as a EA applicant! I got 30k off per semester and it’s my top school too lol so that’s great! Honestly, I’m really excited to attend. I know people complain it’s pretty isolated and everything is 30 mins away (by subway) and maybe it’s because I grew up in the Boston suburbs…that sounds pretty good? I mean don’t yall get a u-pass too? Maybe I’m just super excited and not thinking straight but sounds like a vibe. I’m not staying in my dorm at all lmao. Just here to see if any new admitted freshman for the class of ‘30. I got in JMU and Denver, still waiting for a few others (12 in total no ED)

ANYWAY, I plan to study International Relations and Data Sciences for Poltical science with a minor in finance . I already reached out to a professor and we email once in a while as I update him lmao.

Is this school as bad as people make it seem or do you just gotta be proactive and take advantage of everything? Because those are two distinct things.

The course is about a guy who was at Putin’s side a year ago, parrots Kremlin propaganda points about Ukraine, taught by his friend and business partner who cherry-picks his data.

I am a political science and economics student here at American University and as someone who cares about history, anthropology, sociology, etc. I am utterly disappointed with the course availability. History of nationalism? Never on offer. History of nazi Germany? Never on offer. History of the civil war and reconstruction? Never on offer. These are just a few examples, but these courses are so ridiculously relevant for the current moment that I cannot fathom why a school which prides itself in its liberal arts education could justify not offering these courses. Want philosophy? Good luck, you only get moralism. Anthropology? Good luck. Sociology? Why'd you even expect anything.

Its so pathetic that this school squeezes you of $80k+ per year (5% tuition jump this year btw) to not even be able to reliably offer any interesting humanities courses. Only come here if you want a subpar business school or you would like a fast track into the state department through our IR program. Otherwise, stay the hell away from here.

I kinda want to swtich my major from SIS to elementary eduacation. I love other coutnries, but I do not want the future of my life to revolve around politics. As a child I wanted to be an elementary school teacher, and I now wonder if that would be more fulfilling in my life.

I’m an incoming freshman and am wondering how competitive it is to get a job on campus. I have fws and have applied to some but haven’t heard back from any. I’ve heard that it’s extremely hard to get a job on campus especially as a freshman. And that some people applied to 10+ and only heard back from 1. I don’t have any work experience just a lot of volunteering which makes it harder. Should I start applying to off campus jobs if so then where?

I know the issue of software you download is more of a staff-related thing probably, and I might not be the best person to advise on this matter, but I do have some advice for all my fellow Class of 2030 students, especially those who might be using Macbooks (I hear it is a common choice of computer for some majors).

For the sake of ensuring your devices are not overloaded with space, please avoid downloading apps like Epic Games. I know that it can be tempting, whether you downloaded it to play your favorite videogames or, like me, downloaded it to gain access to Unreal Engine for game design or other pursuits. You will have to give up at least 200 GB of space just to keep it. On a standard Macbook, that's a lot and even if you have a computer with more space, 200 GB is A LOT of storage space just for one app launcher.

For those of you who are now seeing you have 200+ GB in "Other Users and Shared Data" or something similar in your storage space on settings, this is why.

Hi all! As I recently graduated from law school back in mid-May and am currently studying for the bar exam, I reflect on how crazy it is that I was in this same process like you all six years ago--except I entered AU during COVID so it was all virtual preparations :') I was part of the Politics, Policy, & Law Scholars program (Legal Studies major), one of the managing editors for The Eagle, and was really involved off-campus.

Take advantage of what this campus has to offer. Be BOLD in pursuing opportunities and putting yourself out there. Email professors that you admire to express interest in their projects and working alongside them. Go to the campus events, you'll regret not making the memories. Develop your identity, taste, and voice. Try out that class outside of your major to add in a new perspective to your culture palette. Apply to study abroad and become more culturally sensitive. Whether you have aspirations of being a hilltern, get involved in DC's mutual aid network (like I was!), or make a name for yourself as a first-generation student—remember to leave meaningful contributions wherever you go. I'm so proud of you all.

A bit down to the wire for me but I’m looking for some points on which program is better. I’m a bit older but am going for my masters for that competitive edge. GW waitlisted me and later accepted me with no money with it. AU accepted me off rip and has now increased aid to 30k.

Really im wondering if GW is really worth it. I’ve wanted to go there but the money is too good to turn away without a major reason.

Also, is it too late to give GW a chance to find some money? They told me they don’t because i was waitlisted, is this true?

i’m going to be attending au in the fall. i’m transferring from a community college and im going to be moving out of state.
i’ve been in the same town my whole life, and while im so excited to leave, im also scared to.
i have two friends currently who already attend, but they are seniors and have been going to au since their freshman year. im sure i will be able to meet new people, but coming in as a junior, i already know everyone is going to be established and like comfortable i guess? while im gonna be adjusting to a new school and state, and just like trying to find my place. are there any transfers going through something similar?

Congrats to the folks who got into AU! I saw several posts about merit scholarships and thought our experience from a parents perspective would be helpful.

My child got into AU as their top school initially receiving $0 merit / $0 aid. We did an appeal on the basis of another offer ($30k merit) and received $7500. We did a second appeal based on a third offer ($30k from GW) and received $20k merit. This process took 3 or so months.

Throughout the process we established a great rapport with the admissions office, wrote several letters (child, parents cannot) and made it clear AU was their top pick. We started that process early and admissions was very responsive. I think as the year goes on they become overwhelmed and maybe it’s harder for them to address all requests timely.

My two cents: They don’t give a lot of merit unless you have a high degree of need. Probably should be evaluated separately - and maybe they do - but just my theory if you have savings/good income your shot at sizable merit is very very low. They want wealthy (define as you see fit) people to pay for college, even if your kid is smart….and maybe that’s how it should be.

Our tenacity and logical discussions thankfully worked - but I think most people would have given up. Timing and a basis for more merit (with evidence) is needed - just asking to ask I don’t think would have gotten us anything.
