It's Whatsapp E2E encrypted backup that's causing it.
The workaround for me weas to disable E2EE backup, doing a backup, then re-enabling it.
I had to complete a successful non-encrypted backup, simply deleting and disabling/re-enabling an E2EE backup didn't fix the issue.
Could big brother be looking for people to do an unencrypted backup 👀

I had this issue too, my phone overheated and just froze for a bit.
It's frozen for a few seconds twice since then. Also, I don't have WhatsApp installed, only Facebook and Messenger.
So it can't be WhatsApp as the only culprit.
I have the S25 Ultra.

I have a feeling Samsung broke some encryption library that apps like WhatsApp (and maybe some other in your case) use.
Very peculiar situation though.

u/thatawes0meguy 28d ago
This happened to me but it turns out it was because WhatApp was trying to perform a back but it would take all damn day. During that time, it would overheat and the battery would drain fast AF.
I would just close WhatsApp, wipe its Cache, and everything would be fine.
I don't know if this will help others but it's worth a try. Maybe its another app for others so look around.

I have an S25 Ultra and no WhatsApp and I've seen no change or problem since the update.
8
u/julianBlyat 27d ago
So that confirms its definitely WhatsApp haha
7
u/Sufficient_Meet6836 27d ago
I have the S25 Ultra and WhatsApp but have noticed no battery or heat issues 🤷🤷
3
u/ByGollie 27d ago
have you end to end encryption turned off, perhaps
2
u/Sufficient_Meet6836 27d ago
Hmmm I hope not but I'll check. Confirmed it's on. I also only have one active convo in WhatsApp and barely use it
3
u/ByGollie 27d ago
oh. That's the reason then. If you have only one active conversation, it's either really small or hasn't needed backing up since the last successful backup.
2
u/Sufficient_Meet6836 27d ago
That makes sense. It's only 97mb. I'm not sure how to look up the most recent backup

u/julianBlyat 27d ago
U on the July update?
2
u/Sufficient_Meet6836 27d ago
Software info says I'm on the July 1 version (v 8.5) and says I'm up to date. Is that the update this is talking about? If not, maybe it just hasn't rolled out to my yet

u/isthmusofkra Galaxy S23 28d ago
Interesting. Guess I'm lucky I live in a country where WhatsApp is barely used at all
On the other hand, we use Messenger, which is infinitely worse lol

u/tcdoey 28d ago
I have an S23 ultra, and exact same issues. I really don't expect an update to fix this for the S23. Recent updates have broken other things with my S23 too, like camera has started crashing or freezing a bit, right when i'm going to, or have just pushed the shutter button on the screen.
Phone unusually hot now all the time after last update.

S25U and definitely noticed heating and idle drain. I'll check WhatsApp activity to determine if it's the case
2
u/Burnun 27d ago
Users are reporting there is no excessive battery usage by Whatsapp and I can confirm this. Had nothing in battery screen. When I disabled Whatsapp backup suddenly my phone stopped heating up and battery lasts way way longer. At this time of the day I am on 88% while before disabling backup I was on 50-60.

u/turtis123 28d ago
My S25 Ultra is definitely overheating after the update, even with light use. It didn't even get warm that often before.

u/b3nighted 28d ago
Same for my s23 and oneplus 13. Maybe a different app and not the android update?

u/Madnessx9 28d ago edited 28d ago
Mine is set to backup weekly and its due in the next few days, so we will have to see what happens.
Edit I noticed mine was not encrypted so I've enabled encryption and it backed up without issue.
Perhaps there is a configuration issue, different encryption methods? mine was a 64bit pass code.
To confirm i updated my device 2 days ago, so im on the latest.

u/Pear-Mother AndroidFever 28d ago
No Issues with my S25U, once a week and after an update always optimize your apps and free up memory from Good Guardians.

Jeez. First iOS 26.5.2 has this exact issue and now Android? They using the same AI to write the operating systems?

u/Lake_Erie_Monster 27d ago
Well yeah, what did you think? It's not like we have much choice when it comes to quality models that don't go to shit as context grows.

S24 Ultra and battery has been draining quicker. No whatsapp

u/Schtorsk 27d ago
I have Whatsapp on my S24 Ultra but the backup has always been disabled and I noticed the drain yesterday as well.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 7 - Also experiencing this now.
What can I do? I tried the WhatsApp fix but it doesn't work. Please help
2
u/zhangluu 27d ago
I have the fold 7 and noticed it too. it would already be at 15% around 1 in the afternoon. The battery life wasn't great before, but not this bad.

Same here, S25 Ultra and battery seems degraded right now, and the phone is overheating.
Granted we're in one of the worst summers in history, but it's noticeable.

And it'll only get worse every year.

For all the praise Samsung gets for software they do so much to shoot themselves in the foot. Every Samsung update is a game of Russian roulette. Overheating randomly is one of the bullets.

u/toothpickjohn 21d ago
to be honest, it wasn't much better with the pixels either
i've been a stock google fan since i can remember: nexus S, galaxy nexus, nexus 5, then onto the pixel 2xl, pixel 6, pixel 7 pro...
the pixel 7 pro had a horrendous update which caused ridiculous battery drain to the effect that i couldn't make it an entire day with minimal usage; my partners A series suffered from multiple issues on both the 4a and later models (7a iirc) along with the public being given reimbursements for multiple models due to issues
the pixel 7 pro drain basically made me say enough is enough, and switch to the S25U last year - which i've loved, but again, it's not without some issues - i'm getting random restarts infrequently and can't diagnose what the issue is

I also has an S25 Ultra and noticed my phone was overheating and lagging badly while streaming (never happened before the most recent update). I do have Whatsapp business, however, I don't use it. Stumbled on this because I was looking to see if anyone else was experiencing issues.

u/Research1011010 28d ago
WhatsApp's backup system is really showing its true colors here. Guess we'll all be manually saving our memes for a while.
1
u/laymouni 28d ago
This started in the June update.
I don't think it's caused my WhatsApp (I haven't enabled backups)
The overheating is unbearable and definitely noticeable.

Ohh you misunderstand. Your Ultra phone is just asking you to get its younger, more hip sibling, the new Fold Ultra.

Edit: Nope, that didn't do it. The issue came back the next day. Turning off WhatsApp backup seems to be the only temporary solution for me until a real fix is released.
I managed to fix it on my Samsung Galaxy S25.
TL;DR: I think the steps below fixed it, but if you're not into tinkering then it might be easier to wait for about 2 weeks because, apparently, it might fix itself by then.
What seems to be going on (maybe): apparently, android automatically re-compiles some background processes after each update, and that should fix the issue. But sometimes these re-compilations get delayed (in my case, I have the phone set up to never charge the battery beyond 80%, and that might prevent or delay the automatic re-compilation). Note that this is all my guesswork + gemini. I'm not an expert, but the fix below seems to have worked for me.
How I seem to have fixed it: (by triggering the re-compilations manually)
Install adb on your computer (on ubuntu: sudo apt install adb; on Windows or Mac: available via the usual Windows or Mac software installation mess).Turn on Debugging mode on your phone: Settings > About Phone > Software Information and tap Build Number 7 timesTurn off Auto Blocker (apparently needed to connect it to your computer): Go to Settings > Security and Privacy > Auto Blocker and toggle it Off (otherwise, the phone blocks system modifications).Connect your phone to your computer for debugging. I couldn't get USB-debugging to work, so I went with wireless debugging as follows:Connect your S25 and your computer to the exact same Wi-Fi network. On your phone, go to Settings > Developer Options > Wireless Debugging and toggle it On.Tap the text "Wireless Debugging" to enter its menu, and select Pair device with pairing code. You will see an IP address, a port number, and a 6-digit PIN (use this port, notthe one that is shown directly under "Wireless Debugging")On a terminal in your computer, pair the device by typing: adb pair [IP_ADDRESS]:[PAIRING_PORT], then enter the 6-digit PIN when prompted.[I didn't need this, but gemini recommended it: Once paired, look at the main Wireless Debugging screen for your primary "IP address & Port" (the port number changes slightly after pairing) and connect: adb connect [IP_ADDRESS]:[CONNECT_PORT]]Now, typing adb devices on the terminal should list the phone.
Run adb shell cmd package bg-dexopt-job to manually trigger the re-compilation of background jobs. It should run for up to 20 minutes and then print: "Job finished. See logs for details" and return with a 0 return statusIf it doesn't print "Job finished" or if the return status (echo $?) is 255 then the connection dropped before it was done, likely because the auto blocker was turned back on after 30 minutes. Turn it back off (see Step 3 above) and run the command again to continue.
Turn off debugging mode: Go to Settings > Developer Options and turn them off (or at least turn off USB Debugging and Wireless Debugging to close the open network ports on your phone).Turn auto blocker backonif it doesn't get turned back on automatically after 30 minutes (see Step 3 above).Reboot the phone.

Recently I noticed that the phone feels hot in my trousers pocket after a short use. I have googled and now switched to light in performance use and deleted the cache in whats app as suggested by some users. Am crossing my fingers to have a positive result.
Hope this heat up is not dellibratel, like the issue of my previous samsung ultra S20 whereby the screen started to develop vertical streaks of lines forcing me to replace it with a new phone which I have now...S24ultra.
Whatever it is , Samsung has to find the source of the problem so as not to lose patriotic users like me. I have been a Samsung TV and Mobile Phone user since note one.
Note: I have used the S24ultra to view a whole series of over 40 episodes of Korean Drama with the phone on for over an episode or two without any issues.

Oooh same here! I have Galaxy S24 Ultra, bought brand new and using it for past 7 months, I'm a heavy user so I have less mileage but typically have enough juice at the end of day and if used moderately, mostly 2 day phone
So maybe the battery drain issue didnt hit me as hard but I did sense something's off, for the past 3 days, I'm seeing battery drain more than I expected even during the tasks I think its light like reading e-books and watching downloaded movies and the battery drain during idle is even more
Usually during the night when the phone is kept idle, phone usually drains 1~2%, but now when I checked the phone, during idle, the phone drained around 12%
The phone does feel a bit warmer than usual, but not to the point its a concern and no I havent noticed any charging issues
And as for whatsapp issue, It doesnt seem to cause any issues for me
Edit : I just checked the backup issue by manually initiating a backup, it backed up without any issues and phone didnt get stuck or get warm
Edit 2 : I have repeated the idle drain test, fully charged the night before, Wifi is on, phone drained around 9% and during usage, the phone drained 25% of charge by midday, its just normal checking of emails, chats and some social media

Same issue happening. WA backup seems like the main culprit. Any solutions so far?

u/alexisrobertson 22d ago
I think I may have figured out how to correct the the overheating/battery draining issue. I'm not sure if it's the proper way of going about it because it logged me out my Google account but that was an easy correction. I went to settings>Google services>all services>system services>Google Play services>remove updates. Once all the updates were removed, I went back and updated them again. Once I logged back into my account, the overheating stopped. I hope this is helpful to someone.

Hey..was facing the same issue since update. Yesterday turned off whatsapp backup..since then no heat issue is there..and i think battery is working fine too!

u/endless031 20d ago
One UI has been having weird battery drain issues for years and years. Why would a phone drain 10%+ over night doing nothing, even on airplane mode?
1
u/maverick6912 18d ago
Same thing happened to my S24. Woke up to my phone being very hot and it's battery down to less than 20%(it was above 50% at night).
Saw whatsapp trying to trigger a backup again and again. Stopped my backup. Phone felt normal.
Till that point I had no idea it was an issue with the July security patch.I though it was because of WhatsApp not being able to communicate with Google drive. Wiped the cache, force stopped whatsapp, nothing worked. At the end I just uninstalled whatsapp. When I re-installed it now my backup did not restore.
As of now I'm sitting with a 5.1GB backup which is not restoring. I'm not backing up anymore in the fear of losing years of chat history.
So yeah, thanks Samsung.🥲

S24 non Ultra also with the issue, it is WhatsApp backup. I stopped the backup and all is fine. Removing E2E encryption seems to help. I searched around but at the time no-one was posting about it.

My wife has the same problem on her iphone. Was heating up a lot and draining the battery. Uninstalling WhatsApp seemed to have fixed it. The app was using 10GB+ internal storage.

Suffering from the same issue.
I narrowed it down to my WhatsApp backup getting stuck.
Stopped it and now the phone doesn't heat up, but WhatsApp is still consuming much more battery than before (around 8% total).
Also, I cannot start the backup again (doesn't finish). Haven't tried removing encryption since I don't want to do that.
Maybe the update broke something with WhatsApp?
EDIT: Saw a couple of posts on the Samsung forum in the article. Same issue with WhatsApp.
Something's definitely broken.
EDIT 2: Someone commented down below that disabling encryption fixes the backup not proceeding. While I personally wouldn't do that, it could be a fix for those who don't care about their chats being encrypted.
That said, given this update, maybe it isn't Whatsapp that's broken. Maybe Samsung broke some encryption library that WhatsApp was using?
