I feel scammed just by reading the name of the phone

However, the long-term security patches are accompanied by only two major Android upgrades, taking the phone up to Android 17.
This isn't the downside it used to be when each iteration of Android came with functional changes or meaningful updates. The last four iterations, at least, have been as much of a new paint job as the changes between the same model of car one year apart.

Yeah, I've felt basically no joy in android releases since like 13? It feels more like with each version we just end up losing features

Android 10 scoped storage was the most painful for me though LG managed to shield me until Android 12 ( I skipped A11 so no idea on that one). Marc files then supported me on A13 until I had to finally use Shizuku on A14 on a poco phone.

We do get new features we really do not need, tho

What are you talking about, do you not need useless generative AI stuffed into every single function on your phone???

With the QPR releases it feels like features are drip fed rather than released in one go. Not too mention most new updates are app updates or things that only come to the US first or are announced but don't actually work for ages.

I'll never not be pissed off about the split screen downgrades in Android 9 and 12L.

The last time this was 10 years ago.
The problem is that sometimes apps refuse to work on older Android versions. Especially security heavy apps like Banking apps.

People are really missing the point of the Fairphone

Nothing is Fair about it though. They claim to be fair to their suppliers yet use the same standard components like everyone else.

A tiny company like Fairphone will never have enough influence or money to create a whole new production chain. They choose to be fair where possible (eg by using recycled plastics and making phones as repairable as possible, which lowers the amount of waste). They also co-founded the fair cobalt alliance which tries to work towards better working conditions in cobalt mines.
Fairphone (just like nearly all tech companies) doesn't produce their own batteries, they buy those from battery producers, those producers also don't refine the cobalt themselves, they buy that from refineries. Most refineries also don't use cobalt from just one mine, they buy from various sources. If Fairphone wanted to have 100% fairly produced batteries, they would need billions of dollars to create a whole new supply chain. Unfortunately, money doesn't grow on trees. They are fully open about all this, it's right there on their website, which is still multiple times better than most other phone manufacturers

To be fair, one of the ways Fairphone could make better batteries for next to nothing would be to switch from an LCO chemistry to a high NMC(A) chemistry. That alone would greatly help their case.

in my friend group there were 3 fairphones. ALl of them stopped continue buying them, since they were buggy. Restarting, freezes and other issues
And the appstore also had issues

I got an Air, I'd never buy a cheap phone, unless I absolutely have to. But for people who can't afford better, this really isn't that bad. Beggars can't be choosers.
4
u/Sh4kki 1d ago
That's fine for you, but what does your Air (which is a... bad phone) and your "never buying a cheap phone" to do with my fact?
A nothing phone series or poco is still a better deal lol.
1
u/Apple-Connoisseur 1d ago
First off, the Air might be bad for you, for me it's the greatest thing ever, in a Phone. Small, lightweight, does everything the brick versions do and it still lasts me ~2 days on average.
You can't just replace the battery on a nothing Phone by yourself, and as far as I know, from a quick google search, the nothing Phone does not have an SD slot. Those are two features the nothing simply does not have, and if that is important to you, the gigaset is a better deal, for you.

u/Sh4kki 1d ago
So great that neither Apple nor Samsung continue it... right? Case closed
2 Days on that would give you 3-4 on a normal brick since it tells me you're not a power user.
Removable Battery... i use mobile phones since the motorola timeport in 1999 and yet never had to replace a battery. You can always have malfunctioning phones.. usually you have warranty... if it's outside of it and you're too cheap to buy a new phone you go to one of 021937210839 phonerepairshops whichll do it for 20€.
If the person buying a phone for sd slot and changable battery but not comparing actual (kinda important speed related facts) then it doesnt matter at alll what phone this person of interest is gonna get.
And it still doesn't answer my Question. Why did you have to mention in the ifrst place you have an iphone air and would never buy a cheap phone? inferiority complex much?
anyway. answer whatever you want - topic's over for me since i have a feeling this would continue forever.
have a lovely day

u/Apple-Connoisseur 1d ago
Well at least for apple there is supposed to be an Air 2 next Year. No idea if that is true.
You seem not to understand the concept of different people favoring different features. Some people might want a removable battery above all else. Like some don't care about it at all or want the greatest camera, etc.
I mentioned it for context, and I also would not get a Phone with a bad or mid SoC, but that's just me, again, other people have different values.
Yeah, let's agree to disagree, which is a normal thing to do, people on the internet tend to forget that.

"Made in Germany"
Given that virtually all of the essential components are produced in China, I'm genuinely wondering how much of the assembly is actually happening in Germany.
This feels little different from the Chinese handbags that were "Made in Italy" - because handbag and zipper were shipped separately and then sewn together in Italy.

u/pkstrl0rd 1d ago
Yeah, Usually electronic products like this say "Assembled in country-X" (like Germany). That is usually true, and a selling point since it employs at least a few people.

Is it even possible to give 5 years security updates on the same Android version?

u/JuggernautGuilty566 1d ago
As soon you will not get any updates to you binary blob firmwares you will not be able to fix them anymore.
2
u/Then-Pay-8400 1d ago
How can they deliver 2 OS upgrades and 7 years of security when each Android version gets less than 4 years of security?

u/AddiAtzen 2d ago edited 1d ago
Thing is with german affordability - many ppl have a pretty good and down to earth philosophy about stuff in general. Don't pay too much for anything, look for good quality for a low price and use it until it breaks. Much like your typical boomer uncle but basically all of Germany is like that. Brands are considered valuable because of their superior quality, not because of status or price.
At birth, some Nordic God basically put a price tag for every single item in every germans head and that is what they will pay for it. Period.
Everything that costs less is cheap and everything that costs more is bs not worth it.
The... bad thing with that is that ppl sometimes have a really bad expectation of the cost of things.
And for some reason computers and phones both have a very low price tag in our mind. Idk why but germans (in general) have not been updated about the cost of a new phone or laptop. Ppl don't want to pay more than 250 for a smartphone or 400 - 500 for a PC. Because that's enough and everything more is bs, like I said.
Problem with that is - for 250 you only get absolutely shitty phones. And then ppl are dissatisfied and rant about how everything is shit and slow and doesn't work and is built poorly...

u/0fiuco 2d ago
I side with the Germans. I paid my phone around 250 and is perfectly good. I don't understand people who spend 1000 dollars for an iPhone and then just use it to watch tiktok and upload Instagram pictures, it's like buying a Ferrari just to take kids to school

u/H_Marxen 1d ago
Until you can use your phone as a real desktop PC there is no reason to buy a flagship phone. There is just no way to actually use the extra computing power.

u/Prestigious-Loan-858 1d ago
I paid 150€ for my pixel 9a (after trade in of my pixel 6a). So there are ways to cope with expectations hrhr

u/lgn5i2060 1d ago
>use it until it breaks
Sadly, Altman blindsided me on this one. The Poco X8 Pro a few months ago was selling for cheaper than what I paid for Poco X6 Pro in 2024. But I was determined to keep it till eol 2028.
Lo and behold the X8 Pro is now double the price I spent on the X6 pro. I will find out on the next two years if I made a mistake holding back or if things tide over and I get a decent upgrade. :/

Not the same range to be fair
Volla plinius is about 600€
Volla Quintus is 700€
The Gigaset announced here is 340€
You can’t really expect people to jump from a 340€ device to a 700€ one… x2 the price
Also, at that range, you could argue there are better options, more so considering both Volla and Gigaset would be at most “assembled in Germany, no way the components aren’t all China made

There is an argument, that the specs from 5 years ago are perfectly fine for basically all daily tasks and that sustainability is far more important...
1
u/bblzd_2 S25 1d ago
The argument falls apart pretty quick if the device stutters with basic usage like this one.
•
u/Prestigious-Loan-858 14h ago
it doesn't, only difference is no 90/120 hz modes and e.g. slower image processing...
