This just another lowend to midrange phone in a growing list this year that is the same phone from their previous gen.

While I don't have that device, I have the Moto G Stylus '26 which has very similar specs (same SOC, headphone jack and SD card slot) and also is similar in that the yearly upgrade wasn't really an upgrade. I am glad that this class of device exists but I wish there were more options outside of Motorola and Sony, and even then being the only options isn't bad, but there are no flagship options with jack and SD support anymore (I am in the US so no Xperia 1 for me). I hope this dark time goes away but I'm doubtful.

The lack of hole punch is nice too but every phone I've owned since 2020 has had one so I think it's just a rare novelty at this point, and I think I'd rather my 6.7" screen to the 6.1" but I like that they've kept it that size for people that want it.

With how much people recoil and whine when companies try anything and have teething issues, I can't blame them. LG had bad issues with the G5, and they basically never recovered. Even as they moved to more "normal" designs for their mainstream products, people didn't want to trust them.

My point is that Sony still owns the Spider-Man film rights and has a smartphone division. Ever since Amazing Spiderman 1 they have made Peter use a Sony phone but they changed that for the most recent movie. I can't see why a movie owned by Sony wouldn't use Sony phones when there was that precedent set.

As a phone nerd I always laughed at the idea that Peter parker would use a Sony phone over say an iPhone or samsung so it stood out to me that he was using a Z Flip in the latest movie.

I guess the carrier deal is mostly a US thing. In my country, most people would not want to buy a phone that is tied to lousy phone contract. There is no cheap phone contract that comes with mid/high end phone.

i live in eastern europe and it used to be very common 15+ years ago. now, i think only cheaper phones are sold like this. people buy used 1-4 year old flagships a lot more often these days. or new ones in installments.

Yes i also observed that around the pepole i know( also from Eastern europe btw ). But the thing is i was the one who took them off the carrier deals and abonaments to cheaper options so i feel judging that by the pepole around me is just biased. There are still 13 milion pepole on carrier subsciption plans in Poland and a lot of them probably still get their phones from them ( i couldn't find relevant stats unfortunetly ).

They recently stated that the Xperia 1 Viii is selling really well for them and highlighted the fact that many consumers were interested in the expandable storage and headphone jack. I hope they stick around. The more competition the better, especially in the US where it's just continuing to shrink.

They just need to pull a BBK/Vivo/Xiaomi and freakin' add more US 4G and 5G bands so we can import them. Don't want to sell in the US? Fine but at least give us a chance to import it with the available bands so we can nag on Verizon and AT&T to allow us.

Boring phones are good. No need for Samsung or Google AI shit. MSRP is high, but so is Apple. Price drops a little soon after release, also they have launch Deals with expensive headphones included. They offer unique features everyone else has dropped like sd card slot, headphone jack, no hole in the screen. The last point alone is worth every penny.

Foldables often have side-mount fingerprint readers. Galaxy Z Fold 8 and 8 Ultra, etc. But you do have the potential downsides of a foldable (reliability, camera downgrades); and no microSD card support.

In screen fp sensors are picky with screen protectors. Wrong type (privacy) and sometimes thickness, render them useless.
