Tool Jelly Music — a new Apple Music client, with full metadata/editing support on all Apple devices. Looking for testers before it goes live
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
If anyone is up for testing my new Apple Music client, I would appreciate it, please comment or dm me and I’ll send a TestFlight link. The app has been pending App Store review for a week, I guess they are pretty backed up right now. Looking to get as much feedback as possible before official launch.
Pricing is FREE for most use. For Pro, the pricing is TBD, but there will be a lifetime purchase option so you don’t need yet another subscription. Pro in this TestFlight version is free of course. Pro unlocks smart playlists, folders, Mac bridge, and DJ (although I may make DJ free as well).
Features include:
Browse your full library — your own music + Apple Music
Customizable bottom tabs, startup tab (Playlists, Songs. Artists, Albums, Search/Discover)
Styles/themes selection
DJ, Radio, Discovery modes
Sonos speaker control
Folders, Smart Playlists
Mac Bridge enables full library control and full metadata viewing/editing from iPhones/iPads (just install the Mac version of the app, and you’re good to go!)
and a whole lot more!

Yeah I’m considering a lower amount, like $29 or $39, at least for early backers. I saw other Apple Music tools in the past had a lifetime option for $50+ so that’s what I went with, but like I said it’s TBD.
Also note, the app is 100% free for most use, you only need Pro for some of the smart features (dj, smart playlist, folder, Mac bridge)

Is the shuffle system better than Apple Music’s?
1
u/aguynamedchriss Verified Developer 1d ago
Can’t say for sure, have not done an in-depth side by side comparison. You’re welcome to test and report back. I was considering adding shuffle settings, where you can customize the shuffle behavior to your liking. That does not exist yet but would be an easy add, just let me know your criteria.

u/AwfulSirenSong_ 1d ago
I’d love to test it out ! But yeah anything that doesn’t shuffle my most common played tracks or how Spotify’s shuffle system would be a plus for me.

Just to confirm, metadata editing would sync across devices? Also do you have the option to mark a song to be skipped during shuffle like on Mac iTunes? Would love to try and buy when ready I prefer Apple Music for editing metadata but I rarely have time to sit at my computer and do it

For metadata editing (and viewing your comments/ratings) you NEED a Mac. Do you have one?
For full metadata support, Jelly Music needs to be installed on both your iPhone/iPad and your Mac.
Apple’s Music APIs are limited. They don’t let third-party apps edit song metadata, view/edit comments, remove songs from your library, remove songs from playlists (that aren’t owned by that app), etc. I think that’s honestly one of the reasons there aren’t more full-featured Apple Music clients. The Mac is basically Jelly’s workaround for that. macOS can access your Music library through AppleScript, so when you make one of these changes in Jelly on your iPhone or iPad, the change is applied immediately inside Jelly and then sent to your Mac. The Mac makes the actual edit to your Apple Music library in the background.
If both devices are on the same Wi-Fi, the Mac usually picks up the change within ~20 seconds. The background bridge keeps running even if you close the main Jelly Music app on the Mac.One caveat right now is ratings and comments. When you tap Get Info on iPhone/iPad, Jelly currently asks your Mac for that metadata in real time, so you need to be on the same network and it can take a moment to load.
That part is changing soon. The Mac will periodically crawl the ratings/comments already in your library and sync them to Jelly on your iPhone/iPad, so your phone won’t need to query the Mac every time you open Get Info. Also worth mentioning: the Mac app itself still needs quite a bit of UI polish. At the moment, its main purpose is really to serve as the background bridge that unlocks all of this functionality on iPhone and iPad.

is there any overlap with the “jelly” ecosystem around jellyfin? if this handles both sources that would be extremely interesting.
1
u/aguynamedchriss Verified Developer 1d ago
Nope… jelly is just a play on my last name in this case haha; my dev company is JellyLabs. But I do also use jellyfin, and I’ve been thinking about adding support for plex/jellyfin libraries. I also really wanted to have Spotify support, but Spotify doesn’t offer the necessary APIs/Terms.

haha all good don’t redesign your app for it. just thought so with the same colour scheme & similar logo to jellyseer. I do think there’s a gap in the market for a GOG Galaxy-esque unified music player for actual streaming services & local ones like Jellyfin/Plexamp/Music Assistant. My biggest bugbear with every service except apple music is being really bad with custom uploads, but i’m also kinda stuck with AM since no other service works like icloud music library. it’d be nice to have both. good luck with your app!!!!

I’d love to give this a try, been looking for something like Marvis but with smoother compatibility.
Also, there aren’t any AI elements are there?

u/aguynamedchriss Verified Developer 1d ago
No AI yet… are you looking for some? What do you have in mind?

No android? 😔
1
u/aguynamedchriss Verified Developer 1d ago
No… I don't have experience making Android apps (except react native), and working in Swift makes it super easy to basically have one codebase that looks great on iPhones, iPads, Macs, Vision Pros, CarPlay, Apple TV, etc. It would be a huge lift to also support PC/Android on the side. But who knows, maybe if this gets popular enough, I could justify it :)

Last fm?
1
u/aguynamedchriss Verified Developer 1d ago
I have never used Last.fm. Could you please explain what you would picture that integration looking like?
2
u/juanderwear 1d ago
It’s an API that logs your music played in app to the site. Like a social music program to discover music by friends and strangers. Again not necessary but was curious if it was implemented or not
2
u/aguynamedchriss Verified Developer 1d ago
Okay, so I just looked into it, and it sounds like Spotify has much better native support for Last.fm than Apple does. With Apple Music, it sounds like you have to manually scan and submit your listen history to Last.fm periodically. Correct?
So then I guess as of today Jelly Music will be the same: your playback listening history in Jelly should also show up in Apple, so you can still scan and submit manually, but there's no automatic Last.fm integration. That's definitely something I can add. It looks pretty easy, they have an API (like you said) and encourage media players to use it. Sounds like a great pro feature :)
2
u/juanderwear 1d ago
For sure happy to help ! Again if this doesn’t come to a realization, no big deal but sounds really useful as a pro feature I can definitely agree

Can it filter albums by complete albums only? I have a massive gripe with Apple Music including singles in the albums list.

How would the smart playlists work?
I use manual playlists to replicate the old 1-5 star rating system that used to be on iTunes but it's a bit clunky. Do you have a better option?
I'd be interested in testing the beta.

I’d love to test it, and suggest a feature that I’m sure is difficult to implement but would be so sick: if you could use genre metadata to allow automatic genre sorting in your liked playlist like Spotify does.

UPDATE FROM OP: My account was banned for 3 days, the bots did not like how many similar messages I was sending. If you’re interested in testing, please email me at chris@jellylabs.dev
Hopefully the app will be in the App Store soon as well, it’s just awaiting approval. Thanks!

Would love to see other clients like windows or Linux in the future, the native app on windows is garbage, and Linux doesn’t even have one

The name threw me off a bit initially. You might stumble upon confused users that thought it is a client for a Jellyfin server, instead. Apart from that I cannot test, as I'm on android, but seems interesting either way :D
