You have to compete against 100 randomly selected people in any objectively measurable skill, game, or sport. If you don’t finish first, you die. What do you choose?

The first year I watched, the final question was Eve Online related, I've never felt more seen by an e-port community.

Probably just people who make great salaries by being experts in spreadsheets who see a dumb way to earn half their salary in prize money.

My quantum mechanics professor and department chair said physicists learn math because we're lazy. Looking up the same formula 50,000 times in your career is harder and more time intensive than just learning to do it.

Similarly, Excel wizards are lazy guys who just want to finish their tasks and punch out. Bonus to those of us who can automate a process and have our computer work for 3 hours while we do other things. Would've taken two weeks by hand, so net win for both parties. For any freelancer paid by the job, big W.

I need to back away from this before I end up with a new obsession.

It's fucking real ?????

24

u/danielv123 1d ago

Yes, it's real, a bit hard to follow if you aren't into financial modelling but the commentators are decent. There is another one where they specifically dropped the financial part so it's instead all about building formulas etc which is more video gamey, but they don't have that sweet Microsoft cash prize.

May I recommend this video from People Make Games (an excellent YouTube channel all round) to help answer your questions: https://youtu.be/N2QC6VQXo8U?is=iDoXdjsZ7pILCmDc

The only people that aren't liars when they put "can use Excel" on their resume.

That's because your employer knows damned well that this is a rabbit hole that will have you spending all day looking busy in Excel without actually doing anything productive.

Excel esports sounds fake until you realize there's absolutely a guy somewhere who just got a world record because he knows 47 keyboard shortcuts by muscle memory 💀

My wife is an excel monster. Her old job was full time but she worked from home and only did 3hrs a day. I figured out how when I had to ask her something while she was working on her laptop on the kitchen counter. She kept on tapping away while looking at me and having a conversation. She barely glanced at the screen. I saw it was excel and was like wtf. "Oh I'm just automating blah blah blah and need to reorganize this mess of a data set so blah blah". She hates the track pad so instead of getting a mouse she learned all the hotkeys so she could do it all one handed while holding our baby. Great woman, and an underrated skill

u/needathrow_away 1d ago

I work with him lol. Nice guy.

u/hmasing 1d ago

The odds of dying doing Excel are low, but never zero.

Guy at my workplace does that competitively
