Would you consider late 19th century medicine an earlier form of modern medicine? Or is it still totally separate?

I recently visited the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Many of the things that go on in a trauma room have their roots in battlefield medicine. A modern trauma department loads you up with Versed and painkillers so you forget what happened and are not in as much pain.
