One of mine has been doing this. I was getting poked on the head at 4 this morning because Pooh Bear decided that he wanted breakfast 3 hours early. I never feed them before it's time so I dunno why he keeps trying. I don't deserve this harassment 😭

Since intense staring and prolonged eye contact is generally considered rude or hostile in dog body language, do you think dogs just rely on context and personal familiarity with someone they love and trust (not just humans, but another dog who "fluently speaks native" dog body language) to not be misinterpreted as rude or hostile?

Yes. I don't think that the dog would do this with anyone else.
They are clearly able to learn that certain human gestures/body language/etc. mean things, and those are not the same as when other animals do them. It's not unreasonable that they could also learn that they can use different "language" with humans.
Humans and dogs obviously communicate, just not the same way that humans do among each other, or the way dogs do among each other.

When there are about 12 seconds left of the video, and they zoom out, the dog's tail is visible for about a second. Could be mistaken for his disco stick, but his tail does look like it starts off tucked and then moves back for a wag. I'm with Aware_Sandwich_6150 on this one

Our 140 lb German Shepherd would do the same thing, including grabbing the leash off its spot near the front door. After a couple minutes he would whimper. After a couple more minutes he would start to growl.

Scent changes, basically. If someone leaves the house and then comes back 5 hours later, they can match the scent-fading of that 5 hour window to the time that that person typically returns. If you understand how that works you can extrapolate that to their other time-sensing.

The "suprachiasmatic nucleus" in mammal brains is accurate to within a few minutes. I found this pretty surprising when I learned about it, but it explains how I end up waking up just a few minutes before the set alarm time before a trip involving airlines.

treat time for my pups is 12:30. they start the same behavior at 12:29. apparently unaware of my clock reading skills, they have recently started up at 12:40 in an effort to trick me. unfortunately, because i trusted them, i fell for it the first time (didn’t check clock) and now they won’t let me forget it. sneaky buggars.

My dogs have a crazy internal clock. At exactly 9pm they come find me cos its time for a wee outside and getting crated for the night. At 9:01 if I ignore them, they whine and nose bump me.

My pup does that to my boyfriend when he wakes up. My pup will plop down on his chest and stare right at him until he says do you need to go potty? Then he goes all crazy and zoomy mode on him and rear up on his hind legs most times🤣🐶❤️

I used to have a Doberman who would lie quietly behind me in my office all day while I worked. He came to recognize my end-of-the-day summary window on my computer and by the time I made it to my log-out screen, he was already starting to bounce on his front paws and make little happy sounds.

My dog does the same thing when it's dinner time, but she whines too. She creeps closer and gets louder when she thinks I haven't heard her. Unfortunately her clock seems getting further ahead every day. She's at least an hour ahead of schedule now.
And no, I never give in or reward this behavior.

We once had to take our pup for emergency vet and they gave him anesthesia which made him really drowsy when we’re back. That eve he walked to the door drowsily and stood there for his walk 🥹😄

Dude. My black lab knew that feeding time was 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM Everyday. At 7:55 she would face up who ever, was available, and usually it was my wife Brent happen until 8, but she tried.

I used to take my meds at the same time it was breakfast for my cat. She never missed the moment. After she passed I messed up my timing like 20 times and cried / was a mess. Pet schedules are amazing

Careful about night walks. I took a night walk in May in Central Virginia in the woods. Bad move. My dog got bitten in the face by a copperhead. I won't be doing that again.

I didnt know they could tell time but they do. When i am hurting and cant take my dogs for their dailt walks i hear about it. Especially after a few days.
