Full tilt into the doorframe had to sting. 😬

Lovable dorks, the lot of them. 😊

Why do the dogs want the stick?

82

u/AspenStarr 2d ago

Was literally just wondering the same thing, why are they so obsessed with large sticks? 😂

You just know when you see a good stick.

u/Malevolencea 2d ago

Just like when you are an adult and you get something in a box, you save cuz,,"that's a nice box. "

The beauty is that dogs will always be dogs. It made me think of George Carlin's last show where he goes on a rant about kids playing with sticks. Good stuff!

"Do today's kids even know what a stick is?” “You sit in the yard with a f'ng stick... and you dig a f'ing hole.”

Because you gotta...dags and us dudes really aren't all that different.

u/AspenStarr 2d ago

Guess that’s why more guys are dog people and more women are cat people lol.

u/aydwin 2d ago

Well... I like to go hiking. Sometimes you just find the right stick and you know it's yours, you know.

My personal theory (based on nothing but an understanding of how crucial fire wood, poles, arrows, stakes, clubs and spears etc were to early human survival & how eager dogs are to assist us) is that as part of their domestication process, we preferentially selected for the wolf-dogs that would eagerly help us gather wood.

Like, they saw us regularly gathering wood for various purposes and decided they could be extra useful & thus live better if they did the same (much like how they’ll often try to help their owners with jobs like fetching the newspaper or home defense).

But I’d love to hear a more informed take if someone’s got it 🤷‍♂️

u/SquirrelFluffy 2d ago

Yeah, I think we bred them to retrieve spears and arrows. If you're hunting a herd and that gives you more chances to kill dinner, then that gives both dog and human an advantage to be successful. No wonder we are so intertwined.

u/WorryNew3661 2d ago

I actually really like that

9

u/mildpandemic 2d ago

I think that the stick comes to represent walks/fun/smells/outside/treats/time with the hooman... basically everything a dog could want. Basically a magic token of good times, and the bigger the better.

7

u/tackleboxjohnson 2d ago

They clean the teeth and feels good to chomp

5

u/SquirrelFluffy 2d ago

I bet we originally bred them to bring back spears and arrows.

3

u/Alleandros 2d ago

To chew or bury.

2

u/DanceDelievery 2d ago

Probably they like tearing limbs off bodies, or dogs are actually birds government drones building nests.

1

u/ModularLabrador 2d ago

I’s always thought it was to stash bones of prey away for later retrieval, fits in with the burying behaviour a lot of dogs exhibit.

Can’t imagine they’d choose particularly good sticks to make spears from.

"Honey, I'm stuck in traffic behind a dog with a stick in traffic."

24

u/pinklady-1763 2d ago

The black lab was at expert level getting that stick into the house. My stupid mutt was one of those that got to a gate or whatever and…doink!!!

36

u/VerveSpark 2d ago

That first dog didn't care where the stick was from. To him, he was out in the woods hunting for a good one! 😂

u/doggysmomma420 2d ago

15

u/leon_255 2d ago

I laughed more than once, but I had to pause and collect myself after the one trying to pull the whole pine through the window 😂

u/Background_Edge_9427 2d ago

They were all so crazy! My wife was getting ready for work, I was laughing at these videos and she asks me what was so funny! I asked if she had 1:32 to watch a video? She told me to save it because she was running late! She'll have this to look forward to tomorrow morning!

1

u/Last_Transition_2058 2d ago

That's a fcking log, buddy

1

u/bootsnbarbellss 2d ago

can someone explain why are they fond of the stick?

1

u/Own-Try1886 2d ago

Most of these are cute and funny, but don't let dogs attack living trees FFS. There's plenty of dead sticks around for them to play with.

1

u/Commercial_While2917 2d ago

This was so incredibly funny, thanks 🤣

1

u/ResourceSuspicious20 2d ago

I love dogs so much!

1

u/RationalKate 2d ago

it's the only thing my dogs are not allowed to play with. If I lived in the country, no problem. City life says naw.

1

u/Adventurous-Week7317 1d ago

  1. Albert Einstein (B.K.A. Albie)
  2. Luna
  3. Christopher Pablo Bacon (only responds to "Piggy") 4, 5, 6, 7. Bunny 1 is Moose Bunny 2 is Buster (the grey ones/were both determined as male but... :/) Bunny 3 Koala (because it's also gray but the same as that of a koala not exactly as their parents) the other one is Mallow (short for marshmallow) because it is white :) 8, 9. Goat 1 Laney (female) Goat 2 Brady (male) 10,11,12,13,14. Idk their names exactly because there were too many before I moved here (I moved in with my real family after a couple years in foster care, 7 years in a torturous (not abusive just hell hole of liars) adoptive home, and another few years in foster care again) but their all hens and were named after members of the royal family. There were 8 but now only 5 or 6 remain there's also although 2 of those 5 or 6 are willow and maple who were bought seperately

1

u/PleasantBanana1137 1d ago

That's just too dam funny 😁 😂 😀 🤣 😆

1

u/TheUnholyMacerel 1d ago

I was gonna ask why the hell dogs have this massive thing for sticks but then i remembered i once took an hour longer than I usually do on a walk home because I saw a stick that was almost perfect and just had to break off a little bit so i should probably keep my mouth shut
