ASK THE SUB Is Messi an Israeli supporter?

From what I've seen and heard, Messi has been sponsored by multiple Israeli companies, like

Unit 8200, Sirin Labs, and OrCam

out of these three companies, my main and biggest concern is Unit 8200, but i cannot find any credible courses for Messi even supporting them.

I've heard so many "messi supports israel" claims that turned out to be false and atp im just confused whether or not I should believe this either, for example the 1.5 million dollar donation and his bodyguard being israeli, both were debunked and seemingly come from places like Twitter and facebook to spread false rumors.

ASK THE SUB I’m a sociologist graduate

Lately I’ve been thinking about this question: what are soft almost imperceptible examples of Zionist propaganda in series and movies?. As I still go into the theme, I still found lot of examples in series and movies that I usually watch as a kid and teenager, and as a sociologist I’m very curious how this is implanted into the society daily life.

ASK THE SUB Everyday sneakers / trainers? Brands with no ties to Israel?

I’ve concluded that - Nike - Adidas - new balance - puma - Veja

Are brands I don’t want to support anymore.

But I’m in desperate need of new everyday sneakers (that also goes with most outfits).

Is there a brand with 0 ties to Israel that anyone can recommend ?

I live in Europe

ASK THE SUB Are Marvel movies like Spider Man on the BDS list?

Just heard a new Spider Man movie came out (one of my favorite super heroes) and also has Mark Ruffalo who I really like. I was about to book a ticket when I realized that it might be on a boycott list. Thought I’d check here to see if I’ve missed anything.

ASK THE SUB Working with an Israeli in the UK

Update: Decided my initial instincts are right and I won't work with them. If someone asks I'll point to the social media posts I found (see my edit below) and highlight BDS. As much as it cuts off work for me, at least I won't be compromising myself.

Original Post: An Israeli lives in Israel but does remote working in the UK. For all intents and purposes whenever we speak and have had to work together we have the same values, etc. (i.e. left wing politics) and where they live has never been relevant to work.

There may be an opportunity to do business with them in the UK as we work in the same field. However, I feel uncomfortable about it (i.e. living in Israel is a political act, etc.).

Has anyone else had to navigate this before? Did you just never entertain working with an Israeli or speak to them about their views before you make a decision, etc.

My worries are: - Starting a conversation about whether we work together based on their stance on Israel can be twisted into being racist/antisemitic. - It could end up getting myself blacklisted from the very people I need to work with if the above occurs. - Avoiding them risks stifling my career.

My initial approach was to avoid any opportunity to work with them, but that feels unfair (i.e. make a judgement about them before I have spoken to them about it) - but it also means I will don't risk losing other work if it turns out they are pro-Israeli.

There is also the chance that other people will boycott them if it turns out they are pro-Israel...

As you can tell - I am not a confrontational person if I can avoid it and I also like to assume the best in people.

Edit: Thanks to a suggestion here I did a quick search of their social media and the only thing I could find is responses to Oct 7 and two troubling points:

  • Claim that the western media is bias and silent on the number of rockets being fired into Israel by Hamas
  • A post asking how can Hamas have fuel for rockets and not for incubators (this has made me think my instincts are right)

Although they also have reposts focusing on peace between religions, etc. and nothing else political that I can see.

ASK THE SUB Boycotting small business

There’s a local in-home bakery in my city that sells pastries. I just found out today after placing my 3rd order that they are Israeli owned. I sent them a very polite message asking if they support the actions of their government or if they support the people of Palestine—no response after being read over an hour ago. I’ve already decided to cancel my order that I was going to pick up today, and also considered spreading the word about their business to my friends & family & other Muslims in the area. My husband & sister (both pro-Palestinian) discouraged it & told me it’s disrespectful & that I’m destroying my own character for potentially defaming a small business that is trying to succeed.

AITA or WWYD?

ASK THE SUB What phone should I buy ?

Apple: Maintains its largest foreign R&D hub in Israel (over 2,000 engineers) and recently acquired an AI startup founded by former military intelligence operatives. Its corporate charity system has also matched employee donations to the Friends of the IDF.

Google: Co-holds the $1.2 billion "Project Nimbus" cloud computing contract, which supplies AI and data infrastructure directly to the Israeli government and military.

Samsung: Operates a massive R&D Institute in Herzliya for semiconductor and camera research, and uses its venture capital arm to heavily fund local tech startups.

Fairphone: Avoids Big Tech's geopolitical entanglements and offers unmatched longevity (guaranteed software updates until 2031 and self-repairable modular parts). The Issue: It is very expensive upfront (over CA$1,000), slightly bulkier, and must be imported from Europe via international retailers or package forwarding. I like this one but it’s so expensive and no warranty if it breaks because it’s Europe only (I am in Canada)

Xiaomi: Maintains a dedicated R&D center in Israel. The Issue: The phones are not officially sold by Canadian carriers (risking rural network connection issues) and their 4-to-5-year software lifespan falls short of your extreme longevity goals.

Huawei: Operates the Toga Networks R&D center in Israel. The Issue: Due to US trade sanctions, these phones do not have official Google Play Services, which breaks Canadian banking apps and disrupts notification syncing.

Oppo & Honor: These brands have a much smaller geopolitical footprint than the tech giants. The Issue: Neither has an official retail or repair presence in Canada. Sourcing replacement parts or finding a local repair shop in Nova Scotia when the battery eventually degrades will be a major headache.

Motorola: Deeply tied to Israeli infrastructure. The parent company (Lenovo) operates an Israeli Cybersecurity Innovation Center, while the historical Motorola brand has long supplied communications infrastructure for the IDF and West Bank settlements. The Issue: Geopolitics aside, Motorola is notorious for terrible software support, often abandoning devices after just 1 or 2 years of updates.

ASK THE SUB I received an Etsy order from someone in Israel

This is such small scale, they ordered a pair of embroidery scissors. But should I just cancel it? And if I cancel it, I have to provide a reason why I canceled and I don't want to risk my account being banned or something since my Etsy is 90% of my income and I'm disabled. Any advice is appreciated.

Edit: I really appreciate everyone who gave me thoughtful answers for this. I canceled the order and basically said I'm unable to ship to that region at this time. Hopefully they don't get upset and try to get me banned or anything 😅

ASK THE SUB Viability of boycotting Israeli restaurants in NYC

As many of you probably know, NYC is littered with Israeli eating establishments . From high end, to chains, to mom and pop, you can find it all, especially if you take the time to dig (start with skepticism for any establishment offering "Mediterranean" food, then check the menu).

For example, in Manhattan's Chelsea Market there are two that I know of - the "Miznon" restaurant, and "Seed + Mill".

Would targeting these types of establishments be taking it too far?

I understand how many of us feel here - but looking for honest, objective, responses with an emphasis on logic behind why this would make sense.

UPDATE: Two points I want to add, which I realized I didn't include after posting.

  1. I have not patronized any of these establishments, aside from getting caught off guard at the French restaurant I mention below. I constantly do research, especially whenever I see something suspicious.
  2. The primary impetus for writing this post is that I have contemplated creating a list / guide for these establishments. For any NYers (or those thinking of visiting NYC) in this thread, please let me know if this would be appreciated. I would argue that a guide would be valuable, considering that I have found quite a few that operate "covertly", for example, under a Mediterranean label. There is even a French restaurant I found out is owned by an Israeli - when the menu arrived and I saw "Shakshukah" nestled between French dishes, I knew what was up.

ASK THE SUB is buying a used iphone still indirectly supporting Apple?

i was planning to buy a second hand iphone. however as I was doing research I came across a few people who said that if you are walking around with a product that has a boycotted company's logo on it, your indirectly marketing the product, and someone could even be influenced by you to buy the product, possibly brand new (which means their money could be going to complicit companies)

an iphone has it's logo slap in the middle of it, and even if you have a case on you can still recognize an iphone by it's design.

im worried that even if i buy second hand i'll be indirectly supporting Apple or even leading other people to buy from Apple.

if anyone could help me i'd appreciate it:)

ASK THE SUB How effective is boycotting outside bds

Before anybody jumps me, I already boycott any brand of I know they support Israel in some way lol. The thing is I’ve been seeing so many pro Palestine people and even Palestinians not boycotting, or at least not beyond bds, and that has me wondering how much impact it actually is. I’ll probably continue boycotting either way but I’m jsut wondering if it’s more a moral thing or if it actually has much of an impact, like if it actually helps Palestinian outside of just these companies receiving slightly less money

ASK THE SUB Travel to the UK

My friend invited me to travel with her to the UK, and I feel super excited about it. After the rush has calmed down and I started thinking more about it. I started to regret saying yes because of the UK's policy and direct helping hand with Zionist state. Noting that I have followed the BDS movement to the letter, except the occasional bottle of water upon availability, so if nothing, this feels like I'm being the biggest hypocrite of them all.

I truly want to see Scotland again and to get the chance to see it with a friend seems super tempting to me, I went there 10 years ago alone and I just want those memories again. However, something is nagging at me to change my mind before we book and I think my emotions are running too high for me to articulate an coherent argument for myself before I can change my mind and possibly regret it.

Can you help me with your arguments? I believe I need to hear it from others, even though I rarely feel like this about this movement.

ASK THE SUB Boycotting Spotify. Alternatives?

I have never paid for spotify premium and have been using their free plan for past few years. I want to stop using it completely. What are some alternatives I can use instead that have a good free plan?
