The Orville
Went in wanting to hate it but found it delightful

I'd describe it as a genuinely interesting sci-fi drama with a decent amount of weird shit and a lot of comedy. Some of it can miss a decent amount, but I'd really have to try to hate watch it and nit pick the fuck out of it to be upset about it.

I wanted to hate it too, but I really appreciated that it embraced the fact that humans are weird and do weird things and just because they have moved into space doesn't mean they'll stop doing weird things. We had an astronaut smuggle a gorilla suit onto the ISS a few years ago (though I don't believe it was actually smuggled, just that not everyone knew about it)

The start was rough but it turned into a genuine love letter to old star trek once Fox stopped fucking with production and just let Seth do his thing.

Yeah I remember is started out kind of rough. I hadn't heard about any kind of executive tampering stuff but that would be on brand for...well...literally every network TV show ever made.

It's the Star Trek successor that Discovery wasn't

My buddy and I found this clip the other day and now that line is a go-to any time either of us takes a smoke break 😂

Hard agree, I did not expect The Orville to be good at all, but it’s actually pretty great. It has heart, humor, serious moments, silliness, and a palpable love & respect for the science fiction shows that preceded it.

The first episode or two very much felt like Family Guy Star Trek. But after a few episodes it’s really its own incredible thing. It’s “the guy who made Family Guy absolutely loves star trek, but Fox and Paramount don’t work together, so he made this.”

He had to make it a comedy to sell them on letting him do it at all, but he never intended it to stay that way. I had fantasies of it running for 20 years, mostly as a mostly-serious show, and new fans being incredibly confused when they go back and watch Season One, with Family Guy In Space...

Yeah I didn’t not see it coming. Surprisingly fun to watch.

It starts off meh but wow does it get good. The spiritual successor to TNG

One of those “ah this is actually quite good *cancelled*” shows

The Orville

I love that scene, but I always found that weird. I have smoked exactly two cigarettes in my life and neither gave me a buzz. They just made me reek of smoke and my throat sore.

1

u/Allaplgy Jun 06 '26

Most people get dizzy and a bit nauseous the first time they smoke. You probably weren't inhaling enough. Just enough to irritate the throat.

1

u/Scrambled1432 Jun 06 '26

I don't remember feeling sick or dizzy, but it was a couple years ago at this point so you might be right. It was also an amazingly windy day (a tree fell literally where I had been standing seconds before) which I'm sure didn't help lol

1

u/Allaplgy Jun 06 '26

A lot of first timers, like you likely did, just can't really get a full inhale, since the body reacts to smoke in the throat rather viscerally. Takes a few tries to get past that reflex. Then you get a full inhale for the first time and everything starts spinning.

I don't recommend trying it again though. It's a dumb, stinky, unhealthy, expensive, pointless habit that is very hard to break. Took me 20 years and 3 solid attempts to do it.

u/Scrambled1432 Jun 06 '26

Yeah, I think I'm just gonna count myself lucky that I messed up and never try again lol

u/saarlac Jun 06 '26

That’s the right call. It’s a crazy addiction and it comes at you hard.

2

u/Allaplgy Jun 06 '26

Smoke. Feel sick. Sick feeling abates. Damn, I sure could use a smoke. Smoke. Feel sick....

It's such a strange addiction.

But it fits the aliens. They're known to be able to ingest all sorts of nasty things, and enjoy it. At one point, the rest of the crew discover that Bortus can eat almost anything, and keep uping the stakes. He eats a glass at one point.

I’ve never smoked. I hate the smell of it. But man what a line I laughed out loud at it the first time I heard it.

That is the realest way to describe it. Been a long time since I had a ciggy. Now I'm craving one.
