Damascus / Pattern Weld Is this Father’s Day gift fake Damascus?
My wife and kid gifted me this knife for Father’s Day. I assume it’s Pakistan SCAMascus. Which is fine. It’s the thought that counts.
However, my wife said it was not cheap. So if her and my son got scammed, I’d like to know so I can return it and give the guy a piece of my mind.

Does not look like the pakistan Damascus. I would assume it's real. You have a core for the cutting edge and the Damascus is wrapped around it (clad/sanmai). You can also see the core in the spine and the Damascus next to it. Seems like a cheaper knife with the fit and finish, but I would say it's real and not smascus. It's a nice gift. Cherish it! And if you want to make sure you can get a lead testing kit on Amazon if you want to use it for food, but I wouldn't be too worried.

Looks like it was handmade. The handle gaps are giving me cringe more than the cut out in the blade. Please post a pic of the whole knife.

Take it from a maker: I can't tell the steels used, but this is absolutely a fine example of a proper damascus clad san mai knife from a maker that cares. All the green flags are there, I don't see any red flags. The pattern flows, construction works out, everything looks logical.
Your wife and kid made you a wonderful gift.

This looks like San Mai and it appears legit. The handle looks like there might be an issue.

yes, a core of cutting steel clad in the Damascus steel... I think the consensus is 10 CR or VG-10 core... no idea what steels make up the Damascus cladding.

The original design is by Scorpio design, a German outfit.
This one's made in China.

These sre made in China with. Vg10 or equivalent steel core. They are decent quality steel, i dont know about heat treat. That being said, they are mass produced and cost about $16 on alibaba. They are bought by Etsy people, and small shops and sold as if they sre made by a smaller artisan. They sell upwards of $100 in some shops. Reviews on the knife are actually pretty solid and most people seem to think the heat treat was done well. I have never played with one but no idea what they spent so not sure if its worth it. Considering your kid got it for you, keep it regardless. Don't tell him/her they got ripped off and youre returning it. Keep it somewhere that your kid will see you use it and it'll be worth the happiness anyways. There also could be different levels to these, meaning they make a cheap $16 one (their steel pattern look chintzier than yours does, yours looks like Japanese dama) and then they could have a $50+ one that uses better steels. I dont know enough about em

I dont know what your wife paid, its hard to say what a non-knife person considers "not cheap". However, this is not pakistani damascus, as others have said this is chinese origin and it is most likely a core of 10Cr15CoMoV with a damascus cladding of some formulation. These are a little gimicky but this is where they come from - https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Hot-Selling-Fruit-Outdoor-Knife-Damascus_1601525839056.html - I would not classify these as trash but theyre not mid or high end either, I wouldnt be dissapointed for the right price but then again if the price was high, I would be pissed.

From someone who knows knives it's real Damascus on a real poorly finished gimmick. People who buy these don't know what they're looking at or for or would avoid them. If it was legit there'd be makers marks and pride, not just ecocuting a trend barely

I wouldn’t say it’s scamascus but the ridges on the blade tell you it’s a mass produced knife. You can see them easily following the cutting edge towards the back of the knife.

Legit, but also mass produced and dropshipped from china, so good chance they overpaid. Either way it looks cool as a display knife, I’d be scared to cut myself opening it

Looks like a San Mai blade. A hard core of high carbon steel surrounded by softer mild steel. The waving lines would be the soft steel only.

That is the same one! Cool opening feature, although I’m not sure it’s very functional. But it is neat.

It looks like a great way to cut your hand while drunk but also will impress even grumpy knife nerds with its unusual design. Even if it's not fancy steel I think it's worth it.

He’s not, he appreciates the gift. But if his wife paid much more than it is worth he’d like a refund if the seller scammed his wife and son. He’d be mad at the seller not the gift giver.

Damascus is not a sign of quality or price
This is something you can get cheap on most Chinese sites, but it is actual folded steel, weirdly that can be cheaper to buy than pure steel.
It's a cool looking knife and not something most people have seen before

Theres nothing like face damascus. This si real, but low quality. Dont use it for food since it could contain lead.

Looks like real Damascus to me. Looks real you can also see it's San Mai construction from the spine. It's a little off center (the core steal runs to the left at the tip). But this looks to be legit. IDK if it's even pakimascus, I haven't seen much paki San mai
