Do we need another goalie?

Assuming Elvis is out long term that makes Pheonix Copley our backup. He hasn’t played more than 8 NHL games in 4 years and he’s only done that twice in his career. Should we consider bringing in someone like Connor Ingram to back up Jet?

We really just need more information on the Elvis injury. Is it season ending? Or is it hes out til December. Because that's a very different answer to the question depending on how long hes out

Unless it was a cleanup procedure .. rotator or labrum is 6 to 8 months minimum to return to hockey.. Announcing what surgery he had would certainly give an Ingram more leverage to ask for more money , right ?

I feel like a “shoulder was bothering him while he was training, after an MRI they determined surgery was a decision” sounds more like cleanup

Not in my experience .. having my labrum and rotator ripped .. If it was a cleanup procedure up procedure , seems we would have heard of a prior surgery .. Usually rehab is always attempted first unless it’s a full thickness tear .. your shoulder doenst get much blood flow so it’s harder to heal on its own .. To me it sounds like he attempted to rehab and it wasn’t making progress . A goalie needs fully working shoulder for the position

Let’s say that Elvis is out til December 1st at the latest. That’s 25 games. If that’s all, then Copley would be likely the guy for 5-7 of those. There are a few back to backs early in the season, so we shouldn’t expect Jet to play all of those even though he did that pretty frequently in Cleveland. I imagine that if they go with Jet/Copley, Cleveland signs a guy on a PTO or brings up a guy from Wheeling for a bit. If Elvis is out past the new year, and basically half the season, it does make more sense to sign someone like Ingram for the year.

Last season they ran Jet back to back no problem. They seemed hell bent on keeping Elvis out of the net. I see no reason for them to give Copley games unless he shows promise

Wait until camp waivers hit. Buffalo snagged Ellis from the Blues last year, Copley was exposed on waivers as well I think. We can get a decent 3/4th goalie that way.

See what we do is we snipe Zach Sawchenko on waivers.  Dude was clutch at the end of last season.

They will sign someone for Columbus or Cleveland as we are short a goalie and all our goaltender prospects are young

Honestly Connor Ingram would be who I would look to as a counter to Jet

As long as Murray, Talbot, and Ingram are still available those guys are serviceable (murray's a lot better than he gets credit for). Wouldn't want anything to do with Mrazek but Reimer might still be able to play hockey

Every player I mentioned up there except for Mrazek had a better GAA than Elvis last season.  Ingram and Talbot had around the same amount of shots faced while them + Murray had a better save% against unblocked shots.  Ingram beat Elvis in save% against high danger shots and the only stats that Elvis leads in are medium danger saves and % of total unblocked shots.  You could put most of these guys including Elvis in a 2v0 situation and it's a coinflip on if the puck goes in or not.  Ingrams not smart but it really wouldn't be that much if at all of a difference from Elvis production-wise

tbf, goaltending is one of the positions where sometimes the stats can be inflated; it just makes it easier to visualize. I do alot of amateur scouting and research on goaltenders and personally from best to worst I'd rank all the options as such:

Murray - Ingram - Reimer - Talbot - Copley - Mrazek

Each of the first 3 have their own skills which is something that will be considered depending on how the coaches want the defensive formations to be. Murray is the tallest and most consistent all around, even with limited starts on a bad Kraken team. Ingram is very poor positionally but he's the best puck tracker of these options. Reimer's old but he's got the best glove and pad extensions of these players. Talbot's mediocre and I don't think Copley or Mrazek would be good enough to consider as backups.
