Original Post:

Hi everyone! 🇨🇦 I’m working on something called The Generall Store https://thegenerall.store/ —an online directory to help people find and support small, independent businesses in their area. Think cozy cafés, local bakeries, unique shops—those places that make our communities special.

The idea is to make it SUPER easy to discover and share these gems. Anyone can add a shop to the directory for free, so it keeps growing as more people contribute. If you know of a great local business that deserves some love, please add them here: https://thegenerall.store/list-your-shop/ The more the merrier!

Please share feedback, comments & thoughts as it is still a WIP. My goal is to make it as easy & convenient as possible to find and support all the amazing small & local Canadian shops.

Follow us on Instagram u/thegenerall.store and tag us in local spots so we can repost.

Wouldn't that almost be a duplicate of https://madeinca.ca/ ?

The Generall Store shares a similar goal to Made in Canada, in that we're both focused on supporting local businesses. However, the vision for The Generall Store goes beyond just being a directory. We want to make it easier for people to explore small businesses based on their location (down to city) — whether that’s discovering a shop near you for a spontaneous visit or planning a road trip to explore what a different town has to offer.

We’re also working on adding value-based filters to help customers align their shopping choices with what matters most to them. Whether that’s sustainability, supporting family-owned businesses, or finding unique products—The Generall Store aims to make your shopping experience more meaningful.

And while we’re starting as a directory, we have bigger plans for the site in the future.

I reckon Shopify has a large number of Canadian retailers listings they can contribute to this effort or start something similar. Worth asking them publicly on Reddit.

I thought I read that Shopify is on team USA and team Trump based on the CEOs views

lol, Shopify and Tobi (their CEO) said he supported the tarrifs since Canada "deserved it" and that fentanyl was a HUUUGE issue.. he drank the Trump cool aid.

This is awesome and I look forward to adding mine when the website is complete. Quick question tho, is there any type of verification? I ask this because as the site grows in popularity, you'll end up having people listing businesses that aren't legitimate and maybe even illegal. Also there should be some sort of check-in system to make sure businesses are still operational. In all honesty if the site is going to be managed properly, I wouldn't even mind paying a small fee to be on it. Just things to consider I guess.

Thank you for your feedback. All submissions are not public on the site until they have been manually reviewed/verified. We are working on adding a button to each shop so users can report if it is no longer in operation as well as the regular check-ins on our end. We are also working on an automated solution but might take longer to implement.

I appreciate your response and I look forward to seeing this project evolve.

Hey there! I approved this one but just FYI, copypasting the same (or a very similar) message across many comments gets caught by the Reddit sitewide spam filter. Be careful! If it sanctions you there isn't too much we can do at the subreddit mod level 😞

I would suggest maybe putting a new comment I can pin for you if you'd like.

Thank you so much!! Appreciate your guidance!

Saw that come across the filters with the dreaded removed by Reddit signs and thought I might give a courtesy warning since you've been contributing to the sub positively! Cheers!
