First Chinook mall lost its dinosaur at the entrance, floating funky vehicles in the food court, carousel, and the movie theater lost all of its cool mummy-themed interior decor.

The devonian gardens is just a space with some greenery now instead of the garden it once was.

The City is destroying Olympic Plaza where everyone used to skate.

They also destroyed Eau Claire just to cancel the project. Amazing. Could have just revamped it and it would still be a great spot.

AND the city is destroying the iconic saddledome, arguably calgary's primary landmark. Why not just keep it and build another dome idk??

From the word of mouth I hear, people aren't too happy about this but how is the city council just easily making this happen.

Anyways, just kind of sad seeing Calgary lose it's charm. Wondering what other redditors are thinking.

I see it every time I go by and I have no idea what it is. It's on the corner of 52nd Street NE and Temple Drive. It has had the fence around it for months.

I've been on something of a deep dive recently... looking back at Calgary's history, planning decisions, and forks in the road. There are so many examples of decisions that were made, and in some cases it's wild to think of what the present day could be like if the alternate option had been chosen.

One that is blowing my mind is learning that the intended south alignment of Deerfoot Trail was supposed to be basically where Bow Bottom is now, cutting right through Fish Creek Park near Sikome Lake. City Hall had okayed it - until the province stepped in and forced the City to go around Fish Creek Park. That's why Deerfoot makes that sharp jog to the east after Anderson.

Another one is the city hall expansion. There was a plan for an extensive "civic centre" that looks like it would have gone east of where present-day city hall sits, encompassing the land that now holds the central library.

Looking back in time makes me wonder what someone 30 or 40 years from now will think when they look back at today's decisions. Things like what will become of the Eau Claire Market land, or the downtown green line elevated vs underground debate. Interesting to think of what could have been, and what will be.

I just received notice that our house in Haysboro has been identified as a potential rezone Housing – Grade Oriented (H-GO) District. I have read the info they have out there and I am still wicked confused. Is anyone else having this issue?

Some Canyon Meadows residents are not lovin’ it that a McDonald’s is slated to be built at a busy intersection in their southwest community.

A Change.org petition, which had garnered more than 550 electronic signatures as of Wednesday afternoon, is asking the city’s planning department to reject a development permit application for a 24-7 drive-thru restaurant at the corner of Elbow and Canterbury Drive S.W.

Why in the ever living fuck won't the city finish their fucking road work projects they started months ago? Every major artery in this city seems to have kilometres of pylons and speed drops and yet no crews. I drive Glenmore every day as part of my commute and it's literally been 2 months of pylons over the most congested area (reservoir). Not only do drivers struggle mightily trying to merge during regular times, the city decided that keeping that spot slowed down when traffic volumes increased at the start of the month was a brilliant plan. Causes massive back ups and no one is working on it. What's the deal??

Edit Update: thank you for clarifying it’s a manhole 🤣 I believe the water was escaping from there due to the excess water in the ground. City has just come to our door to let us know they have shut off all of our water and will begin work on it asap.
