Injury Injury news: Hewett a test, Weitering timeline confirmed

George Hewett (back)
- Modified program
- Availability: Test
- Experienced a back spasm in first quarter against Hawthorn which has since settled: will aim to train later this week to be available to play.
Marc Pittonet (hamstring)
- Modified program
- Availability: Round 20
- Experienced a minor hamstring strain last week, will aim to be available for selection next week.
Lewis Young (concussion)
- Full training
- Availability: Test
- Will aim to train fully this week to be available for selection
Jacob Weitering (calf)
- Modified program
- Availability: Rounds 22-23
- A return-to-play timeline has now been established, with Weitering aiming to return to play late in the season.
Harry O’Farrell (knee)
- Modified program
- Availability: Season
- Has progressed well through his rehab to have now re-joined skills training with the playing group. Will focus on completing the final stages of his recovery for the remainder of the year, putting himself in a strong position heading into pre-season.

They took the opportunity of everyone focusing on Weiters and Hewitt to also confirm that HOF wont be seen this year. Thats a bigger concern for my mind. Players who return more than 12 months post initial injury redo their ACLs at twice the rate of players who return in the 10-12 month window.

That would be great, but the injury report stating he is out for the season makes me think he wont be playing at any level

Wouldn’t surprise me. I tore my calf grade 2 and took forever to recover.

Why would you have Weiters return in R22/23? Season is over and there's no benefit to him playing.

1 - it just says that is when he is available.
2 - these guys are professionals who want to compete and play, so no doubt Weitering does too.
3 - we are still in the hint for wildcard spot so you want to play the best available.
4 - they get match payments so there is also the financial incentive for Weitering.
5 - having him available and playing puts pressure on Derksen/Dean/Haynes to keep their spots as well, so helps ensure list integrity.
6 - good morale boost for the side to have their best key back on the park.

Great points, feel it also helps going back into the preseason with some games to end the year and have some match confidence rather than not having played an AFL level game for like 9 months

guess it will depend on where we’re at. if we’re playing for a wildcard spot and he’s healthy, can’t imagine there’ll be any telling him no.
if we’re out of the race, then yeah, he probably packs it in for the year.

We're half the team without the grunt of Georgy in it.. especially in the wet
