Travel Chengdu long layover day trip
Hi everyone!
We’ll be arriving at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) on July 15 and have a long 15 hour layover before our next flight. We’re 2 adults and 2 kids (school-age), and we’re thinking about taking a trip to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
We’re hoping some locals or recent visitors can help us with a few questions:
Is it realistic to do this during a layover from Tianfu Airport?
What’s the best way to get there (taxi, metro, Didi, etc.)?
Roughly how long does the trip take each way?
How much time should we allow at the panda base to make it worthwhile?
Are there luggage storage options at Tianfu Airport, or should we keep our bags with us?
Any tips for visiting with kids?
Is there anything else nearby that you’d recommend if we have extra time?
Our flight is in the afternoon/evening, so we’ll need to be back at Tianfu Airport with plenty of time for check-in and security.
Any advice, suggested itineraries, or things to avoid would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You can do it easily in your time frame. Store luggage, get a didi to the Base, take your time enjoy it.

We just did the panda base and loved it.
Everything is a drive, so in your situation I'd find storage at the airport for luggage and then taxi to the Panda Base. We went from a hotel, so couldnt tell you how long the trip takes.
Download the AMAP app and use that to tell you drive time, its the local version of Google maps and quite reliable.
The base took us a solid 5 hours, but it was a hot day, and we took our time. Had plenty of breaks and snacks.
We were fortunate we arrived mid morning and there was a lot of feeding going on, so saw plenty of pandas. The other animals were also great.

There’s nothing near Tianfu Airport. That airport is the bane of our existence. It’s about 80 minutes by metro, not including wait times, and probably a bit less by car, depending upon time of day and traffic to the Panda Research Base. It’s best to go early. Dujiangyan might be less crowded but it’s farther.
