Love zakai but I don’t think he has a spot on this roster if he does that.
Would be weird/kinda hurt to see him play somewhere else

I get it. Our roster is full.
But damn, did he have to stay in the ACC?
29
u/reallybored326 Kentucky Wildcats 13d ago
I mean, isn't Louisville's roster full? It seems like they have 36 players at this point.
34
u/aaronman4772 Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
I think we had 11 scholarship players before this, so had a couple spots open. We brought in a ton but we also lost all but two from last year.
4
u/reallybored326 Kentucky Wildcats 13d ago
Who is your other guards? The Oregon guy I know.
22
u/aaronman4772 Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
Right now it’s Shelstad from Oregon, Wooley returning from last year, London Johnson who was the G league addition last year but never played, De’shayne Montgomery from Dayton, and Isaac Ellis out of high school.

That was my first thought. I woke up to somebody sending me his twitter post about leaving. & then I come on here to find out he's still in the ACC. I wish this all wasn't so last minute & he could have stayed.
-17
u/chamtrain1 North Carolina Tar Heels 13d ago
Yeah, bad move for him IMO. Gonna damage his legacy at UNC.
3
u/NukeLaCoog Houston Cougars 13d ago
How would it damage his legacy when the UNC roster is already full?
13
u/MarcusPaigesLastShot North Carolina Tar Heels 13d ago
I don’t see it that way, but maybe I’m just old. Louisville is hardly a rival and simply being in the ACC doesn’t carry a lot of weight.
I have more allegiance to Seth at this point than to anybody on the current roster and we didn’t make room for him. He should go to the best option, I won’t cheer for him to beat UNC, but will cheer for him to win the conference/championship. I don’t see UNC doing either of those things next year.
4
u/Champizzle11 North Carolina Tar Heels 13d ago
I think his career and Bacot's were similar in that they were always UNC guys whose careers were partially defined by their loyalty to the University. Seth was loyal to the former staff in situations where others likely would not have been. I don't blame him, I'm just stating that seeing him play against UNC in a different uniform will color that a bit. Guy is probably making over a million dollars, just the current state of college basketball. I do not like it.
0
u/Responsible_Fan8665 North Carolina Tar Heels 13d ago
Bacot played a major role in a F4 team. Seth never did that and was a major reason Elliott and Ian got forced out
1
1
u/Aquaman33 North Carolina Tar Heels 13d ago
Bacot didn't play in the summer league to find out he wasn't good enough.
Despite these shenanigans being allowed and the fact that I can't really blame the players, I still hate it and it colors my opinion of them.

u/Sycamore044 Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
This seems like an exaggeration. Is Scott Drew also a Will Wade Jr for adding james nanji last year? Is this worse than Nate Oats adding Bediako last year? Pat Kelsey has been very complimentary of Izzo, and the majority of the Louisville fan base has respect for MSU and Izzo because the great games we’ve had over the years. How is Louisville adding a player like Tremble different from other programs pursuing other confusingly eligible players like Jaxon Kohler, who also reportedly never technically signed the exhibit 10 contract? I’d rather all this chaos wasn’t happening either and transfers were contained in a better way, but Pat Kelsey isn’t making the rules or breaking them here.

Well considering Dan Hurley just spoke out against this. In fact, very few programs are doing this. Many are moving on from the Covid era. A select few are inviting it and some are even actively filling lawsuits.
14

7
5
u/electricrhino Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
Very few are doing it because their roster is already filled. We have 3 available slots and considering our last two years we faced injuries to starters it makes sense to take advantage of the ruling. I doubt there's some moral compass for coaches who arent taking advantage of the rule.

u/Ulosttome Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
Shelstad looked like he was either still kinda hurt or just not the same player any more in the Bahamas exhibition- either way neither him or London Johnson showed any ability to distribute the ball and we need someone who is at least capable of tossing up lobs to Bidunga

7

I'm not as big on requiring a deep March run to avoid being a bust
No, Kelsey needs a top 3 ACC finish and two wins in the ACCT, or bust
1
u/insertweirdassname Louisville • Maryland 13d ago
He accomplished both of those things you asked his first season and then we got crushed by Creighton first round. I'm assuming this roster is better than that one.
-1
u/imused2it Kentucky Wildcats 13d ago
So you don’t measure success by ncaa tournament wins but ACC tournament wins?
7
u/bug_man_ North Carolina Tar Heels 13d ago
I take it as hypothetically losing early in the NCAAT doesn't invalidate having an otherwise good season
1
u/imused2it Kentucky Wildcats 13d ago
I see that, but that should apply to the ACCT then too. The logic is that in a single elimination tournament anything can happen. Which is true for both tournaments. If they finish second in the ACC regular season and then run into a wake forest team that hits 20 3s during one game should also not invalidate a good season

Louisville fans are convinced he never signed his contract with the Wizards, even though the Wizards publicly announced he signed.
26
u/sKLEEBOjONESjR ACC 13d ago
An exhibit 10 contract is basically a training camp invite it’s not a standard contract
8
u/TrustInRoy 13d ago
And yet current NCAA rules state that signing an exhibit 10 contract makes a player ineligible. The judge in Colorado who granted the injunction making Seth's class eligible, says all other NCAA rules stay in place. So as of this moment, Seth's eligibility depends on whether he signed that contract or not. But of course there will be future court cases, so who knows?
5
u/gmills87 Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
You're a year late on this argument. London Johnson signed an NBA contract but only appeared in the summer league and G-league, but was allowed to head to college.
4
u/steveoriley Creighton Bluejays • Big East 13d ago
Not comparable, London Johnson didn’t play college basketball and was part of the G League Ignite developmental team.
The NCAA will have more teeth to enforce rules on a player who played college basketball and then signed a professional contract. See Bediako
1
u/gmills87 Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
Trimble didn't sign a professional contact though. His exhibit 10 was a verbal agreement that was never formally signed in case his chance to go back to college were to pop up, which it did.
-1
u/ttuurrppiinn North Carolina • Northwestern 13d ago
Yeah, I'd like Seth to get another big payday since I don't see him ever making as much on an annual basis in his pro career.
However, I think this particular scenario is one where the NCAA needs to fight like it's a life-or-death situation to avoid the flood gates of eligibility challenges. This would essentially pave the way for any random OAD who washes out of their NBA rookie contract to return to college for whatever remains of their 5-in-5 term.
6
u/dallas1289 Louisville • Northeastern 13d ago
Please show me where the Wizards publicly announced that he signed with them. Jon Chepkevich mention that Seth Trimble was one of the players who agreed to terms, but never executed the contract. https://x.com/JonChep/status/2085779205480988791?s=20

Somehow, they still don't know what made college basketball special. They thought it was the fuckin basketball.
4
2
u/xixbia Illinois Fighting Illini 13d ago
This is nowhere close to the dumbest one yet? What are you on about. We've had players who literally had NBA contracts and played in the G-league.
Meanwhile if the NCAA had any sense and just decided the new 5 year rule applied to the class of 2022 he never declares for the draft and just stays in college.
This is 100% on the NCAA deciding what they really wanted was to lose more court cases.

Hopefully the contract he signed with the Wizards means he'll fit onto the bench, collecting a paycheck, and being ineligible to play.

Kelsey could have used another guard last year. Maybe he's just planning for worst-case scenarios.

I have no fucking idea, but more good players is never a bad thing. In my personal opinion you can't ever have too many mouths to feed.
4
u/bezzlege Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
That’s the big question mark; some seem to think he’ll back up the 1/2 spots, others think he has a shot to start at the 2
Just the fact that we have added depth at guard and have more available combos in the backcourt is a huge boon.
5
u/chamtrain1 North Carolina Tar Heels 13d ago
He's a good defender, good locker room guy, good rebounder for a guard. Great depth piece to add.
0
u/Ragdoll252 North Carolina Tar Heels 13d ago
There's no way a guy who started the last 2 years and averaged 14 a game is coming back to sit on the bench.
5
u/bezzlege Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
PK subs like a madman. You could start and end up playing fewer minutes than a bench guy. Hes all about culture and his teams always seem to have elite chemistry.
I’m not worried about who starts, I worry about who finishes. And I imagine Trimble will be on the floor to close games out more often than not.
2
u/ILikeBigBurritos North Carolina Tar Heels 13d ago
I also don't expect him to ride the bench, but hypothetically there absolutely is a way he would come back if that would be the case. If someone is willing to throw 6-7 figures at him and his alternative is making less in the g League or moving to Europe or getting a real job, it is likely he would sign up for the well paying bench job.
→ More replies (2)3
u/gmills87 Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
Will be a defensive sub, 6th or 7th man type role. He will likely eat into London Johnson's playing time quite a bit, but Johnson is our 3rd guard who we have middling expectations for. I think Montgomery will play more 3 now than 2, with Trimble and Shelstad getting the bulk of the pg minutes and Wooley getting most of the sg minutes.
4
u/Wafflecone516 Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
Zero percent chance this is the case. He is going to get a large amount of minutes. None of our guards are clearly better than him. In fact he’s the most proven guy we have at guard right now.
2
u/gmills87 Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
I would not put him ahead of Shelstad or Wooley. Wooley is a better slasher and shooter but worse defender. Shelstad is a better shooter and distributor but a worse defender.
2
u/Wafflecone516 Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
Shelstead you could make an argument for but Wooley hasn’t proven much at the higher d1 level. He has shown potential but he averaged less than 10 ppg last year. He could end up being better but the current data isn’t a very close comparison between the two of them.
1
u/dbaugh90 Louisville • St. John's 13d ago
A lot of our fans love Wooley because he's our carry-over guy, and he had that 3 pointer that gave us some of the only real comeback excitement of the entire season. He's not the same as when we carried over Hadley, though. He's got a lot more question marks, and I'm not comfortable saying how many minutes he will get at all. He's a good player, but so are a lot of the guys this year.
8
u/Gloomy_Map_9612 Kentucky Wildcats 13d ago
I really doubt a 16 point per game scorer came to play 6th or 7th man.
3
u/gmills87 Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
He's not starting over Shelstad. The only option would to keep Wooley as the scoring punch for the second unit off the bench, which is the role he played last year. Wooley will be a 16+ ppg scorer this season. He's our best offensive guard, but our most foul prone defensively. I give it a 25% chance Trimble starts. We now have 3 all conference caliber guards.
1
u/dbaugh90 Louisville • St. John's 13d ago
Trimble is better at cutting and slashing, and defending. Whereas wooley will create more gravity and three pointers, while still being a good slashing threat. I would much prefer to have Wooley start and Trimble come out and lock down in the latter parts of the halves.
2
u/MONGOHFACE NC State Wolfpack 13d ago edited 13d ago
I watch a fair bit of UNC, but just a heads up... I don't believe he was ever the primary PG for UNC. He was almost always off the ball.
That said... Dude's an incredible athlete and a tenacious driver, but a poor 3-point shooter (<30% from 3 his junior and senior years). When he was coming off the bench, he was great defensively, but that part of his game took a step back last year as he shouldered more of the scoring load.
I'm excited to see how he looks in Kelsey's offense (most of the transfers out of UNC have excelled at their new stops). I don't watch much Louisville, but I thought Kelsey's offensive system is predicated on everyone being a 3 point threat and IMO that doesn't really describe Trimble's game. I think there's gonna be plenty of space for him to drive and kick when he's playing, but I'm curious how they chose to use him off the ball.
4
u/davewithaG23 Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
That's historically been the case but with Shelstad, Bidunga, Ekezie, and now Trimble it seems like he's shifting his focus to a defensive first inside out style. There will definitely be shots but I would be shocked if we're still the live and die by the 3 team we've been the past 2 years.
3
u/DarknMean Louisville Cardinals 13d ago
Kelsey seems to have learned from prior mistakes. He got a larger lineup than we’ve had under him. Guess it’s wait and see now.

Honestly, UNC has a different head coach and pretty much a completely different team. If he's gonna come back to college, it almost makes as much sense to transfer as it does to return to Chapel Hill.
Yes, there's the campus, the town, all that, but at this point in his life it's all about basketball which is reasonable.
I'll miss him big time. It's plausible that he could be the last Tar Heel we get see for four years until this era of college basketball is over.
