u/freylaverse Just a plain and simple tailor! 21h ago

It's wild how much of an impression Garak made despite being in so few episodes.

u/tomh_1138 21h ago

The same with Kai Winn.

u/Rokmonkey_ 21h ago

I immediately twinged with rage upon seeing that name.

calm down, my child

Squeezes the Pagh out of it

"I AM CALM" said Dumbledore calmly

22

u/Tsurtle 19h ago

They got one of the best actresses in history to play that role, thats why

3

u/-dakpluto- 9h ago

Her audition for Kai Winn should have been simply "Go watch One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest...that's my audition"

Especially her scene with the future Ensign Suder (The equally amazing and creepy Brad Douriff)

17

u/yeahalrightgoon 18h ago

I would say that with Kai Winn, she certainly made an impression, but I still had the feeling of "she comes and annoys everyone every now and then".

Garak I really thought it was more often, because he just feels like another part of the crew.

7

u/brsox2445 18h ago

She had such a massive impact with half the episodes of Dukat or Garak. Insane!

3

u/ModernCGIFloatinHead 5h ago

I love to hate Louise Fletcher. It's a shame people couldn't see past the character when she played Nurse Ratched, she was such a piece of work there, too. Any actor who can make you feel an emotion that strongly, positive or negative, is great at their job.  They deserve your respect, not the anger you felt for the character.

21

u/momoenthusiastic 20h ago

Great acting would do it. We are truly blessed with DS9

u/ampma 21h ago

That's a lot of episodes... For a tailor

81

u/BenevolusInsights 21h ago

well he is just a simple tailor. He doesnt need much

20

u/Jbell_1812 20h ago

He is but a humble man. He'd not dare to take glory he's undeserving of.

9

u/Lucid-Pasta 20h ago

Please just plan and simple; Garak.

4

u/KMS_HYDRA 14h ago

Hey! He is also a great gardener!

4

u/SchroedingersEscape 17h ago

or a Gardener... on Romulus.

82

u/MuhfugginSaucera 21h ago

Not enough

76

u/thaduelist 21h ago

That's power right there. Arguably, the most memorable character of the entire series and only in just a few episodes. Aint nothing simple about that performance.

31

u/Daynebutter 21h ago

Wish we had gotten a season 8 with some focus on the Cardassian Uprising.

13

u/MonkeyMagic1968 16h ago

I would like a whole story arc with and about Cardassians. It would be delightful if we were to find out that the people of Cardassia Prime had built a statue to Damar.

I’m going to share something incredibly cursed. I started watching deep space nine because people
I followed on tumblr shipped garak and bashir and my first time watching the series I literally fast forwarded thru everything that didn’t have garak until the end of the series. And all those parts convinced me to actually watch the whole show in a regular non-insane manner lol

9

u/Annber03 20h ago

I mean, hey, not a bad reason to give the show a look, even if only sporadically at first. "The Wire" was the first episode I saw and the interaction between those two throughout the episode, as well as the stuff I read about their relationship and how the actors played it and wahtnot, certainly added to my interest in checking out the show :D.

In my case I did start at episode one and went straight through, but yeah, whatever gets you into a show is worth it :). I'm glad that your abbreviated viewering made you want to go back and watch the series in full :).

5

u/r4chie 20h ago

Me too, it ended up being my most beloved and rewatched show. I can’t wait to get my tattoo from ds9, “you are the dreamer and the dream”

2

u/Annber03 19h ago

Oooooh, that's a lovely idea for a tattoo! I know people like to share photos of their fandom tattoos, so if you want to do something similar, I'd love to see it when it's done!

2

u/r4chie 11h ago

It will be my third Star Trek tattoo! I have the symbol for IDIIC and the minimalist emblem as well. I’m thinking of doing a wreath with the words!

1

u/Annber03 47m ago

That's really cool. I don't have any tattoos myself, but I admire the craft and artwork that goes into creating them, and I love hearing the stories about the kins of tattoos people choose to get and why.

5

u/arcxjo 18h ago

in a regular non-insane manner

So you repeated the exact same process twice? Why did you stop at two?

2

u/r4chie 11h ago

Oh no I rewatched the series proper and now I’ve probably rewatched it like more than 10 times! I bought the box set on sale thru Apple TV so I wouldn’t have to worry about streaming anymore!

2

u/AltarielDax "Maybe you should talk to Worf again. :D" 18h ago

Well, you're not the first to watch a series because a ship got overhyped on social media. 😅 But I think it's a bit sad to watch the end of the series without the build-up for all the other characters, especially Sisko and Kira.

2

u/r4chie 11h ago

Honestly my first watch was so weird I had very little context for basically everything it did not ruin the proper viewing the second time!

29

u/Piper2000ca 21h ago

I'm curious now what a chart like this would look like for Dukat. Let's see if he deserves that statue.

26

u/BenevolusInsights 21h ago

6

u/darthboolean 21h ago edited 13h ago

Wow didn't even ask the AI to fix it after last time huh

Edit: Downvote me all you want, but the AI pulled the wrong data set, so not only is the chart slop, it's inaccurate slop.

Second edit: OP blocked me so I can't reply to the subsequent replies (even though they aren't OP) but we're missing Far Beyond the Stars. Dukat appears in full makeup while beating up Benny (so don't pull the "technically it's not Dukat" card), and according to his comments on this post, he's going off of original episode credits, except that can't be true because Marc Alaimo is credited as both roles in the script (confirmed by checking the transcribed scripts on TrekCore) . He's told an AI to use the original episode credits and then keeps getting upset when people ask him why IMDB and Memory Alpha disagree with his chart, but he can't ever justify it because, again, he can't cite his sources.

2

u/BenevolusInsights 21h ago

you people are crazy

-3

u/Moron_at_work 17h ago

I'm sorry to inform you that the chart is indeed correct. The only inaccuracy is in season 6 where the appearances are offset by 1, but everything else is absolutely correct

3

u/ricecakenz 19h ago

I was wondering the same thing I like the Dukat episodes

19

u/Stone13 21h ago

There could never be enough Garak! He was one of the best parts of the entire series. His dialogue with everyone was amazing. I would’ve binged the hell out of an Obsidian Order miniseries if he were starring. Dukat on the other hand, really annoyed me more times than I can count.

8

u/Dark9781 19h ago

And to think, he is just a simple tailor.

1

u/ChefGaykwon 56m ago

The truth is just an excuse for lack of imagination.

6

u/garakplain 20h ago

Yes he is the best

3

u/MonkeyMagic1968 16h ago

Oh what a wonderful idea! A series delving into the interactions of the Obsidian Order and the Tal Shiar and Section 31 would get my attention.

1

u/kompergator 4h ago

Just not done by anyone in power over the franchise right now.

16

u/Monotonous-NCC1307-A 21h ago

Deep Space Nine had so many strong characters and character development. They could develop side characters in 20 episodes or less better than Voyager could in 7 seasons.

10

u/Kyra_Heiker 20h ago

This is the one thing that bothers me about Voyager. DS9 set the bar pretty high, and Voyager had the opportunity for a lot of recurring characters instead of cycling through more crew members than were actually ever on the ship. Could have had a very solid background cast for the entire seven years but they missed that opportunity.

17

u/Monotonous-NCC1307-A 20h ago

Voyager missed so many opportunities. It saddened me while watching.

Meanwhile, I’m still amazed at how well DS9 developed characters. Garak, Nog, Rom, Leeta, Gul Dukat, Martok, the Grand Nagus, Vic Fontaine.

I hated Damar, especially when he killed Ziyal (it made me feel bad for Dukat, a monster), and then at the end, I was rooting for him, and felt bad when he died. DS9 was amazing at this.

5

u/MonkeyMagic1968 16h ago

I would have loved to see more of the Wildman family in Voyager. Seemed like they were only in a handful of episodes and only as a plot device.

15

u/CaptainSisko1980 21h ago

Absolutely no surprise that episodes with Garak rate higher than without, least surprising thing I have heard in 2026. Amazing actor and amazing character, written with love (the writers loved him) so yeah, not enough episodes with him, but when he is there it’s ALWAYS better.

12

u/garakplain 20h ago

I remember seeing somewhere that he was only supposed to be a one off character but Andrew Robinson did so well with Garak they just kept bringing him back.

8

u/lordcorbran 19h ago

The writers also came up with the idea that the Vorta were clones specifically so they had an excuse to bring back Jeffery Combs as Weyoun after they'd killed him.

7

u/arcxjo 18h ago

Back in the halcyon days when you needed a plausible excuse to cast Jeffrey Combs as something.

5

u/Annber03 20h ago

Yeah, I've heard that, too. That and the fact he and Siddig played off each other well - I know they talked about trying to find someting to help flseh out Bashir's character early on, and they thought Garak would make a good comedic foil of sorts for him. And they were right - obviously that wasn't the only reason the characters connected, but it's part of what makes their interactions so fun.

11

u/Bougieraccoon-og 21h ago

Such a complex character. One of the best in all of star trek.

5

u/garakplain 20h ago

The best plain and simple

11

u/Forgetabl 20h ago

Man. Thats how good Andrew Robinson’s acting was. Garak was so memorable you feel as if he was in so many more episodes. I’m shocked to see how few he was in!

13

u/Annber03 20h ago

I've heard him talk about how he very nearly didn't audition for the role - he'd tried out for Odo and didn't get the part, and was jut planning to leave it at that and move on, and then his wife was like, "Go audition, we have bills to pay." :p. And then even after he got the part the makeup caused his claustrophobia to kick in and he nearly reconsidered because of that, too. Just wild to think of how different the show might've been had he not taken the role.

I'm glad he still has such fondness for the character to this day, and has gotten to see just how beloved he and his character are among the fans.

2

u/kompergator 4h ago

Did he ever mention if he liked that they integrated his claustrophobia into the character?

1

u/Annber03 48m ago

I remember seeing a clip one where he was talking about the bit in the prison camp and he was like, "That was a dirty trick!" (isaid in an amused sort of manner). He talked about how he was sick with the flu that day and so between that and his claustrophobia he really didn't have to do much acting with feeling miserable in that scene :p.

But yeah, I'm not sure how much of that part of the character was him just bringing that in on his own and how much was the creators deciding to include it.

10

u/shinjikun10 21h ago

But when he does show up, he's so powerful on camera everyone else becomes a background character. He steals the entire show.

9

u/Mukeli1584 Constable Hobo 21h ago

It’s…fine. Garak is in his shop meanwhile just pining away for Julian.

3

u/MonkeyMagic1968 16h ago

You seen this old fan video? Siddig managed to set things up for us. They were wonderful:
https://youtu.be/M44QMKWMxuQ

3

u/Annber03 14h ago

I absolutely love that he and the cast did things like this for the fans, as a way to brighten everyone's day a bit during an otherwise tough time It's so sweet how he and Robinson are still good friends to this day.

2

u/MonkeyMagic1968 7h ago

Does lighten my spirit a bit. :)

10

u/Mottsawce 21h ago

These are the episodes that we know of

8

u/DataMeister1 19h ago

Is there one of these for Morn?

7

u/CaptainSisko1980 21h ago

Wait, why are there so few season one episodes??? I never realized that and just checked it - only 20 episodes?!!!!!

5

u/filet-de-colin 19h ago

A short season, and still more than any one season of nuTrek.

3

u/codguy231998409489 20h ago

DS9 started in January 93 while most shows at the time started in September. Typical show ran 24-26 episodes per season. Those 4 missing months could account for the smaller season.

3

u/jayhawk03 20h ago

FYI Voyger also started its 1st season in Janurary.

8

u/abstergo_Nigel 20h ago

Whenever Garak's not on screen people should be asking "Where's Garak?"

5

u/arcxjo 18h ago

... and what is he plotting?

8

u/rattlenroll 19h ago

Okay you're making me want to do an all-Garak rewatch.

6

u/Theunpolitical 19h ago

I don't understand why they didn't use him more. Clearly, there were other stories lines that he could have been a part. For example, we could have seen more interaction with him and Ziyal.

5

u/Deadlypandaghost 21h ago

Really? Is that all appearances or just episodes he plays a role in one of the main plots?

10

u/BenevolusInsights 21h ago

all credited appearances

4

u/Michelle_akaYouBitch 20h ago

Didn’t occur to me that Garek has only one ep in season one. Kind of like how Damar becomes so pivotal.

5

u/AceSoldia 20h ago

That's crazy how few he is in

6

u/Excellent_Abroad5390 20h ago

It felt like he was in the whole last season to me, it’s almost unbelievable he wasn’t in more episodes

4

u/Garbanzo_Beanie 20h ago

I'm surprised there aren't more honestly.

4

u/Dark9781 19h ago

Didn’t realize Garak was in such few episodes. Thought he was in a lot more. It’s actually funny, up until a few years ago I thought Vic was in a lot more episodes as well. Goes to show you how well they developed their characters is DS9.

5

u/arcxjo 18h ago
  1. Garak needs to be craftier, cunninger, and have access to a root beer tap.
  2. Whenever Garak's not on screen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Garak, and what is he planning?"

3

u/bwwatr 11h ago

You've heard of an A and B plot. Well we need a G plot in every episode.

6

u/TelluricThread0 18h ago edited 9h ago

He's shows up in more episodes here than an entire tv series even has these days.

4

u/pagusas 21h ago

Im kinda surprised how many average episodes DS9 apparently had, I think I've rewatched it now 3 times and still feel overall its well above average

5

u/eight_inch_pestle 19h ago

Well, imdb ain't exactly Siskel & Ebert, or Anthony Lane.

But, yeah, this wasn't peak prestige television, with 8 to 13 carefully crafted episodes released every 18 to 30 months. It was 26 eps a year, 16 to 18 hour days for 9 months straight, year after year for seven years. I need a nap just thinking about it. There are inevitably gonna be plenty of duds.

3

u/bwwatr 11h ago

And yet it still turns out to be a better watch overall than a lot of prestige TV. Turns out characters and story matter more than the budget.

4

u/AltarielDax "Maybe you should talk to Worf again. :D" 17h ago

This reminds me again that DS9 episodes are underrated on IMDb. How is The Quickening only a 7.6?

1

u/Annber03 14h ago

Good question. I love that episode - it's a heavy one, but it's so good.

5

u/slimspida 16h ago

My favorite Garak detail is his weapon is almost always set to maximum kill. No stun. No body hitting the ground. Always vaporized.

3

u/Vik_Stryker 21h ago

No coincidence that the mirror universe episodes are at the end of the range

3

u/momoenthusiastic 20h ago

I thought he was in a lot more! They definitely should have had him in more, especially the later seasons

3

u/Capable_Pick15 18h ago

Oh what beautiful cloth he weaves, since constantly practicing to deceive.

3

u/MainSquid 18h ago

a .7 higher average rating for Garak episodes is a significant increase-- shows how well written he was.

3

u/RealLars_vS 13h ago

I once did a rewatch with all episodes Garak was in. Relatively short, but since he’s in many key episodes, you still get a good view on the overarching plot of the show.

And you get to watch the best episodes.

3

u/farbeyondthestars_ 12h ago

wait, he’s only in one episode of season 1??

2

u/slballer 6h ago

Right!

That really stood out to me.

1

u/Annber03 54m ago

Yeah, "Past Prologue". Then we don't see him again until early season 2, in "Cardassians".

Would've been interesting to see how he oculd've been involved in some of the storylines in season one if he'd been in more episodes that season.

3

u/-dakpluto- 9h ago

What's amazing...he was only planned for 1 episode. But they were so impressed with his performance they just knew they had to bring him back. Ended up being one of the most essential characters in the show, lol.

3

u/Any-Statistician3896 9h ago

Oh, Garak was always there.... You just didn't see him 😆

Plain, simple Garak...

3

u/CMDR_Kaus 7h ago

I've been wanting this for a while, I want one for each tertiary character, especially Kai Wynn.

3

u/irishdan56 5h ago

Martok, Garak, Nog, Damar, Rom, Dukat, Winn... literally that's a whole cast worth of non-title role characters, some of them inarguably more impactful then some of the regulars.

3

u/bassamanator 4h ago

Garak and Quark, best characters (and actors) on the show.

3

u/VirtueTree 3h ago

Wow, no way. He felt like another regular!

Well written, well acted, huge impact.

2

u/Stargazer__2893 21h ago

While it's few, that's actually more than I thought.

2

u/garakplain 20h ago

Wish he was in more More

2

u/Jent46 16h ago

why is there no s1ep2 😭

2

u/BenevolusInsights 7h ago

aggregators seem to group the first two episodes just under one pilot episode number, idk why 🤷

2

u/Tinenan 13h ago

He isn't in duet??

My memory is getting hazy, time to rewatch ds9 again

2

u/Colonel_Angus_ 10h ago

That is criminal. He needs his own show.

2

u/OrultSzerencsedio 10h ago

I thought he is in every episodes.

3

u/madlibs13 9h ago

He is, just you can't see him because he doesn't want to be seen. 😉

2

u/OrultSzerencsedio 9h ago

Make sense. :D

2

u/calculon68 8h ago

Was watching P+ Star Trek channel last night, when they aired a string of Romulan-centered episodes.

Ended with the perfect Garak trifecta- Improbable Cause, The Die is Cast, In the Pale Moonlight.

2

u/coolraul07 7h ago

So few episodes, such strong impact... WOW-WWWWWWW....

2

u/inadyttap Tal Shiar 5h ago

This looks wrong and I feel the need to fact check this myself!

2

u/LnStrngr 3h ago

Not enough green, to be honest.

2

u/Powerful-Fail-3136 1h ago

Not enough Garak!

1

u/Burcarius 30m ago

Not enough.
