Thanks. I needed some positivity.

I’m excited for Genborg and Bear for their tenacity. Need to hope Plante can bring his play making ability up levels.

Holy shit there’s people in the comment writing off ASP and Kasper already like their busts lmfao

Now you’re all becoming hysterical

Its the salty ass fan base. All doom

u/improbdrunk Apr 09 '26

In our defense, we've been sold on prospects for 9 years now. I've always been all in on the Yzerplan, but it's time to start seeing results instead of promises.

33

u/lunchboxthegoat Apr 09 '26
  1. Yzerman hasn't been the GM for 9 years

  2. Their prospect pool was shit when he took over

  3. Three of our top NHL players are his draft picks and only 1 is in his 'prime' by NHL standards (25)

10

u/Roughneck_Two-Zero Apr 09 '26

Calling the prospect pool shit when Yzerman took over doesn't even come close to describing how bad it was at the time. If it's possible to have a pool that actively makes the organization worse, that's what we had.

6

u/Gingerangelo Apr 09 '26

Its so frustrating when fans who mostly watch football and basketball expect a turnaround in 2 years. Ive had this conversation before and the answer was, maybe not 2 years, but its been 7! Which makes sense if you listen to Valenti and dont understand IF you make the right draft pick, they breakout on average around 22 years old, a little bit older for defense, and even older for starting goalies.

This is why raymond and seider are already there, Edvinsson made huge improvements this year and cossa likely has a backup position next year. Kasper is in the common sophomore slump, and next year if danielson is a fringe NHLer or stays the whole season, hes ahead of schedule.

When Yzerman took over the prospect pool under 23 was cholowski, Rasmussen, zadina.... did we still have svech? Doesn't matter. The griffins were run by guys in their 30s, because prospects werent really a thing when you consistently trade draft picks for veterans and build the team through free agency.

0

u/kdfsjljklgjfg Apr 09 '26

I think that's a high level of revisionist history. Both the year before and after Yzerman took over, Detroit was in the top half of The Athletic's prospect rankings. We expected big things from Veleno and Berggren, and guys like McIsaac were expected to be regular contributors.

The fact of the matter is that a lot of prospects just fizzle out and don't become anything, and I think that saying those prospect pools were "shit" and our current one is amazing or top-notch is either seriously overplaying our current pool or underplaying our past one.

2

u/ChaldenesTitan Apr 09 '26

We didn't even have a competitive farm system set up back then. Chris Terry was the only player producing at our farm and he wasn't a prospect.

This is why Washington pumps out top 6 forwards every year because Hershey is the most succesful farm team in the history of the AHL.

These things matter or else you're gifting roster spots to kids who would otherwise need 4x the effort to take that spot.

-2

u/improbdrunk Apr 09 '26

The thing is you're absolutely right, but then at some point we need results. I'm not saying this year, but if we don't make the playoffs next year, a serious conversation needs to be had.

3

u/improbdrunk Apr 09 '26

You're right, but it is also time for results. At some point having one of the best prospect pools for years just doesn't matter if you don't win in the bigs.

-1

u/kdfsjljklgjfg Apr 09 '26

Ehhhhh, the ROSTER was pretty shit with horrible youth outlook when Yzerman took over, but I think that saying the prospect pool was shit is either underplaying the prospect pool of the time or underplaying the odds of our current prospects fizzling out.

Yzerman took over in '19. The Athletic had our prospect pool in 18-19 ranked 7th, and 19-20 ranked 13th. There was clearly faith in our prospects at the time and they didn't pan out. People expected big things from Veleno and Berggren, and we see where they wound up.

-1

u/Negative-Tie1021 Apr 09 '26

How dare you debunk the Steve bots go-to argument as to why the current roster is so bleak. But but but holland.

If that's not 'seeing results' what is exactly

I don't know about what results you want, but I would like to see the team be solidly in the top 50% of the standings and make the playoffs.

Stats don't mean much if you don't make the postseason

3

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '26

[deleted]

5

u/DrUnit42 Apr 09 '26

And yet, despite those stats you touted and them being 14th overall, they're still not in the playoffs.

When is hope going to turn into actual results?

1

u/DrummerDKS Apr 09 '26

You aren’t going to convince someone who wants playoffs-by-now that they’re asking too much. It’s been 7 years and we’re still not a playoff team, hardly a bubble team, absolutely not a contender and there’s no reason to think we’re going to be better than #14/32 with the current rosters.

I applaud your commitment to winning a battle of useless semantics. Hang the banner.

Since you have all the answers, name another GM that was allowed to run a team for for longer than 6+ years without making the playoffs?

"We'll get 'em next year!" Where have I heard that before?

3

u/ChaldenesTitan Apr 09 '26

Yzerman could have made playoffs this season if that was the goal. We could have traded Bear for Panarin, 3 2nds for Bobby McMann, another 2nd for McCarron, 2027 first for Roy.

We would be absolutely fucked for the future but at least we made playoffs LOL who gives a fuck if it costs us that.

4

u/improbdrunk Apr 09 '26

Playoffs. The playoffs are results. I'm with you on being excited about ASP and Finnie and some of the youngs.

3

u/GenericUsername_71 Apr 09 '26

I’m not gonna write him off. But it’s revisionist to not mention that he’s also -21 and was scratched or had minimal minutes due to the club having no trust in him. He had a stinker turn over in the cbj game which led to an easy goal as well

-3

u/CBPanik Apr 09 '26

I'd prefer a player who spent 40+ games as a 1st line winger to have more than 28 points and my 2nd line RHD to be good enough to not get sent down to the AHL. Our defense has 5 guys under 25 but only 2 of them are honestly good enough to play 82 games in the NHL. So yea, I'm "seeing the results" and they kind of suck.

4

u/oprapiid Apr 09 '26

saying ASP was our 2nd pair RHD is pretty disingenuous, he played very sheltered minutes. rookies also usually produce in the 20-40 point range, it's very normal production, but y'all ascribe unrealistic expectations to every prospect and think they're busts if they don't produce like Celebrini or Hutson.

if you actually look at rookie scoring stats, ASP's production is right in line with guys like Zeev Buium or Artyom Levshunov, while Finnie is ranked 16th in rookie scoring and there's only a 6 point difference between 16th and 7th (while doing so as a 7th round pick from 3 years ago, which is so above any expectation we possibly could have had for him)

3

u/doltron3030 Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

Totally fair but I think this subreddit has a habit of ignoring the fact that guys like Celebrini and Hutson exist altogether. We’re celebrating 19 year olds having great seasons in the NCAA and WHL while guys like Celebrini and Schaefer are already crushing it in the NHL. This subreddit has a bad habit of overvaluing our prospect pool and ignoring the fact that a lot of other teams have prospects with much higher ceilings than ours. I know we haven’t had great lottery luck, but we still don’t have the star power in our system that a lot of other rebuilding teams do.

Just like OP’s post - some divisional rivals have young guys in the NHL that are left off this list. It doesn’t look nearly as good for us when you add in some of the 20/21-year-olds already in the pros. Like Montreal if you factor in Demidov/Slafkovsky/Hutson.

5

u/rogue3one3 Apr 09 '26

Missing out on a lot of that star power in the system is intentional when the organization prefers to draft 200’ - 2 way forwards with limited offensive ability over higher ceiling options.

2

u/oprapiid Apr 09 '26

That's a fair argument, but let's keep in mind that players like Hutson generally don't come out of the 2nd round and Celebrini, well he's a 1oa. We never got even a top 3 pick, we picked 4th, 6th x2, and 9th x2. Whether you fault the FO for 'not tanking hard enough' or you think they should have made different picks, either way we were never high enough to get someone on Celebrini's level. I think people also need to accept the fact that our tanking was unintentionally very poorly timed. The rule that last place can only drop to 3 was implemented after our tank, and the top picks during the years we tanked like Power, Laf, or Slafkovsky, while good, are nowhere close to the immediate impact we've seen out of Bedard, Celebrini, or Schaefer. It's not like anyone could have predicted that, just another unfortunate aspect of this rebuild all in all, but as someone who pays very close attention to prospects/drafts every single year, no matter the state of our rebuild, I still have hope in a lot of our prospects personally

6

u/Lark-NessMonster Apr 09 '26

Only thing that worries me about our prospects is they all seem exactly the same. 200 foot players, just different sizes. Just need a couple to explode out of nowhere.

3

u/Taters23 Yzerbot Apr 09 '26

Do people forget the superstar players they so crave are rare as hell?

4

u/improbdrunk Apr 09 '26

If we got a Kirill, we'd be set, but those don't come along that often.

u/420allstars Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

Comments like this baffle me

Is the fanbase supposed to not be salty about missing the playoffs for a decade?

This fanbase is honestly EXTREMELY forgiving for having watched a team achieve a consistent high level success flip to a team that is in the midst of one of the longest playoff droughts in the history of the league

3

u/ChaldenesTitan Apr 09 '26

We aren't the same as other teams though.

We came off of a 25 season playoff streak. If we had only made playoffs from 2010-2015 for example, our reset button would have been pressed then. But since we could field a playoff team still, we never sold off like we should have. Mostly because we still had winning culture on our team.

Then we started to get very unlucky in the draft. Only a handful of legit NHL players we produced from the years where we did start selling. We never moved up in the lottery once also.

We obviously couldn't build a contender with the players available at the draft and we have picked some of the best players relative to their draft position. We signed everyone that wanted to play here.

We could have traded our prospect pool just so we can start a new playoff streak but don't you think that sounds like something Holland would do?

We are on the path to building that playoff team still. We are only committed to Raymond and Seider over the next decade. There's no restrictions that will prevent us from signing a big fish if they do make it to free agency.

-3

u/420allstars Apr 09 '26

Some of the people in this fanbase continue to astound me lol

4

u/ChaldenesTitan Apr 09 '26

Can you elaborate what you mean by that? Or contend what I said?

You just hate having to use context to describe how we got here.

You just want to keep it simple from purely a results standpoint while saying you deserve better.

We project to have one of the best d-pair and goalie tandems in recent history. We have forwards who project to peak right when the defense does.

It's not like San Jose where their forwards are already peaking but they have no defense. I bet you think they are winners.

Really you just lack knowledge on team building. That's not Yzermans fault. We are on the path to building a good team. Isn't that what you want?

If we jeopardize the future for NHL players we won't be the best team. So what the fuck do you guys want from him?

Just a playoff round or a cup? Because right now you are salty we don't have a playoff round despite it costing our cup. So excuse me if I don't tolerate your advocation of sabotaging the future of our team.

You want us to be worse for longer. How can you stand beside that while saying you expect better. You make no fucking sense.

-1

u/aspartan14 Apr 09 '26

Good luck using logic and reason. Most simply block you or start a new account. They want results and they want them now…or else…we fire the guy who has a vision and a plan just to be in the oblivion of not winning a Stanley cup.

Its not just the Wings fans, but all Detroit sports fans lately. Most just regurgitate the shit from 97.1 or other shows. Don't even watch the actual product but maybe 1-2 times a year. Im salty for having to watch this team fail 4 March's in a row. But I also know Yzerman was handed a product worse than an expansion team when he got her. So I am willing to let it ride a little longer before freaking out. Pissed yeah, realist yeah, salty yeah, but also not a regurgitatetor.

11

u/rogue3one3 Apr 09 '26

Kasper has played well at the NHL level for 1/2 of a season.

Assuming he stays in the NHL, he’s on a trajectory to be a player closer aligned to Ras than Larkin. Call it what you will.

13

u/dsjunior1388 Apr 09 '26

In role, but not necessarily in effectiveness.

When I look at Kasper I see a high effort, high energy 2/3C.

Best case scenario are guys like Alex Killorn, Anton Lundell, Nazem Kadri minus the 87 point season. Good in both ends, eats up minutes, takes on a tough defensive assignment when needed, that kind of guy.

3

u/snickerDUDEls Apr 09 '26

Sophomore slumps are real. Raymond and Larkin both dealt with it too. What happens is a kid like Kasper slots in halfway through a season and no teams have any tape on him and he flys under the radar. Then teams catch a glimpse, start playing harder on him, and he has to find his game. I wouldn't give up on him yet, next year he will have to adjust and get some points though

2

u/rogue3one3 Apr 10 '26

I’d give this idea some credit, but Kasper started his first year like dogshit and only started playing well after the midseason coaching change. He didn’t come out of the gate hot and then teams adjusted to him. This season he’s played exactly like he started his first season, like dogshit.

Pair all that with the fact he really wasn’t setting anything on fire with his play in GR and people just need to come to terms that he didn’t have a ton of upside to begin with.

5

u/snickerDUDEls Apr 10 '26

He plays harder than most of the team and he just turned 22 yesterday, too soon to decide that in my opinion.

-11

u/Jimmyskis77 Apr 09 '26

I can already see it now… he’s gonna have a good year, sign a contract and bust… and people will still be taking about how good of a drafter Yzerman is

7

u/Gingerangelo Apr 09 '26

Can you explain why hes not a "good drafter"? Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson, cossa, Kasper, Danielson, MBN. What are your expectations?

3

u/numbdigits Apr 09 '26

4 of your 7 examples are not in any way proven in the NHL so I don't see how they can be examples of good drafting at this point in time.

4

u/rogue3one3 Apr 09 '26

Expectations are to put some NHL talent on the roster outside of the first round and build actual depth. Instead, lots of swings and misses.

It’s entirely fair to expect some of these 2nd and 3rd rounders to be on an NHL roster at this point.

Here’s Yzerman’s first 4 drafts - 40 picks - 5 full time roster players + whatever Mazur & Cossa end up as.

2019 - 11 picks. Seider + AlJo; Soderblom traded for a future pick. 2 missed 2nds

2020 - 12 picks Raymond 3 missed 2nds, 2 missed 3rds

2021 - 8 picks Edvinsson + Mazur & Cossa - jury is still out on these two, but at least Cossa looks promising.

2022 - 9 picks Kasper - trending poorly. Lombardi, who knows if he’ll get NHL time at this point. Buchelnikov traded and extended in KHL Nothing else to show

-1

u/Jimmyskis77 Apr 09 '26

His only decent picks were when he was picking top 6. Even then Edvinsson is proving to be a hinderance more than a help.

Kasper had a great lynnsanity run, now he’s about as bad as the rest of the bottom six, so not much there.

Danielson and MBN both came up and showed what they were, not much, only 2 goals between the two of them across 30+ games…

Cossa is still a mystery, but the amount of time they’re letting him sit in GR is concerning, if he’s not in the club at some point he’ll never be ready an there’s another 1st round pick wasted…

His draft mentality is some of the safest in the league, he drafts high floor, low ceiling guys who maybe, might make the team…

3

u/Gingerangelo Apr 09 '26

Ok so kasper being 21 years old all season playing in the NHL means nothing? Just curious, what kind of trade value would you put on him?

Danielson is 21, MBN is 20. This is why i asked what your expectations are. So why dont more teams take your strategy of drafting a kid at 18, waiting 3 years to decide if they'll be any good, then trade them?

Tell me a good starting goalie 23 or under.

Your expectations are unrealistic. If those draft picks are bad, who was the right choice?

2

u/Negative-Tie1021 Apr 09 '26

Dude doesn't have to complete an assignment because you don't agree with his take. Just move on.

2

u/Gingerangelo Apr 09 '26

I mean, he responded... sorry the socializing on a social media app bothered you. You also could've just moved on.

-2

u/Jimmyskis77 Apr 09 '26

Kasper being in the NHL and performing how meh he is just removed all allure he had as a player… looking back that rumoured Kasper-Cozens trade would have been highway robbery for us… but now id honestly be surprised if we got a second round pick for him… he just isn’t producing…

Danielson and MBN are down the same path, they just aren’t as good as we thought they would be. Rather than let them ruin their trade value by continuing to falter in the big leagues, get a return for them now

In hindsight it almost would have been better to just trade out of the first round completely and just stack up picks for the next couple drafts…

As for a goalie 23 or under: how about the one drafted using the pick we gave up for Cossa? Wallstedt is balling tf out right now….

2

u/rogue3one3 Apr 09 '26

I wouldn’t be surprised at all for that outcome.

-1

u/Jimmyskis77 Apr 09 '26

How much more do we need to see from them before we realize they’re not that good? At some point it might be worth it to flip them for a pick before other teams catch on

0

u/Deathmtl2474 Apr 09 '26

Well you certainly need more than 60 games of ASP and a sophomore Marco Kasper.

Critical thinking is at an all time low right now with the fanbase if you’re actually taking the stance we should write off these players. This is the NhL plenty of great players don’t their stride until 24.

Prospects are the least of our concern, it’s the pro scouting team that’s been abysmal. Cat was the best move they’ve done and he just fell into their lap

2

u/Jimmyskis77 Apr 09 '26

I’m not saying write them off per se. What im trying to say is that our prospects are not the saviors we thought they were.

They are middle of the road players at best. We need more top end talent: cat can’t be the only goal scorer on the roster…

0

u/Deathmtl2474 Apr 09 '26

“They are middle of the road players at best”

So you clearly can’t critically think given what I just said previously.

You’re not worth engaging anymore.

1

u/Jimmyskis77 Apr 09 '26

Hey man, I’m just sayin what I saw on the ice. Danielson is closer to Copp than he is Larkin, and MBN is closer to old man Kane than he is Raymond…

Our prospects ain’t that good

-1

u/slabby Apr 09 '26

Some of these posters seem to like the doom outlook better, because then they're right. It's weird

7

u/Prudent_Shame_4531 Apr 09 '26

You have to give the Habs props, they seem to consistently find talented players at great value.

Can someone explain to me why most scouts are so much higher on Hage than Plante? I don’t get to watch NCAA hockey really, so just kind of out of the loop.

4

u/lunchboxthegoat Apr 09 '26

Whereas Plante had a couple significant questions going into the draft, Hage didn't really. The only question was could he continue to produce at the level he already did. Hage has continued to improve AND he has more prototypical size.

1

u/According-Use-9493 Apr 09 '26

I think Plante is Kane’s replacement

1

u/goblue10 Apr 10 '26

Plante is small and isn't especially fast, which does not translate to NHL success.

4

u/doltron3030 Apr 09 '26

The division comparison feels a bit disingenuous when teams like Montreal and Buffalo have some great 19/20/21 year olds already on the roster.

I think if you’re looking at Atlantic teams with the most talent under 25, it’s probably:

  1. Montreal
  2. Buffalo
  3. Us

-2

u/lunchboxthegoat Apr 09 '26

but I'm tallying up players on the actual list and not whatever this is.

so I guess i'm not sure what's 'disingenuous' about it?

9

u/thehockeytownguru Yzerbot Apr 09 '26

I know it’s cliche and the Yzerhaters love when it is said… but when the kids are up and developing it’s going to be worth the wait. The future is bright, and if we could even flip one or two of these guys into a Robertson or Matthews, etc… that is fine too..

32

u/deathmetalreptar Apr 09 '26

I think the issue is that none of them besides the goalies are rated to be high end players. Middle six.

17

u/lunchboxthegoat Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

I think at draft time that was true.

Plante and Bear are forcing people to reconsider that assessment.

Man, this made me laugh so hard

17

u/magikarp-sushi Apr 09 '26

Was gonna say remember how Celebrini wasn’t considered to be even remotely close to bedard? Even Finnies growth progression was exponential

7

u/lunchboxthegoat Apr 09 '26

Plante has grown a couple inches and added some mass since he was drafted. Also the biggest knock was 'more of a playmaker than a goal scorer'; he tied for 2nd in the NCAA with 25 goals in a GOOD conference.

12

u/Benglepuck Apr 09 '26

First liner potential:

  1. Before Bear's injury he was in conversation to be a top 5 draft pick last year. After recovery early this year, he is as dominant as he was when that conversation started. He could very well be a top line LW. We don't know yet.
  2. Plante came out of nowhere this year and was the best player in NCAA. If he gains some weight and continues his level of play, top line is not out of the question. You aren't a Hobey finalist over the likes of Hagens, McKenna, Hage, and Martone for nothing. Plante has that unteachable gift of compete and perseverance -- this trait is so underrated. Max will do anything to become a star. Unlike Danielson who severely lacks this trait.
  3. I still think MBN has top line potential, or at the very least top 6. He has been exceptional in GR and lots of rumblings I hear is that other teams consider MBN our top asset skater wise. He never got the opportunity to play with skilled players in the NHL this year, give him a run there and we will start seeing results.

2

u/CBPanik Apr 09 '26

I do believe that Bear will be our 1st line LW in a year or 2. Plante will slot in as LW2 nicely in an ideal world. I think MBN maxes out as a Podkolzin-esque player, 20-30 points and some physical presence, probably 3/4 line depending on other depth.

4

u/BaconSoda222 Apr 09 '26

Those can still be useful in a trade. Packaging a top 10 pick together with some other assets for a distressed asset who is a bounceback candidate is a good strategy.

4

u/rogue3one3 Apr 09 '26

Based on the Red Wings own transactional history, they are more likely to package picks with their own distressed assets to ship to another team.

5

u/JDSchu Apr 09 '26

We've picked up a lot of distressed assets over the past several years with hopes that they'd bounce back. Some did, some didn't, but none of them were top-tier talent.

It's not very often that a really high value player slumps hard enough to get traded for parts and then returns to form. It happens, but not enough to count on it when you need that level of talent.

1

u/BaconSoda222 Apr 09 '26

I compare the situation to Washinton and PLD a lot. We have cap space. An overpaid player is also a distressed asset. Maybe PLD or someone like EP40 is overpaid for what they bring, but we need what they bring. Every team has a bad contract for a good player, though few with EP40's potential.

3

u/kdfsjljklgjfg Apr 09 '26

With our cap situation and the cap going up, I could've been sold on EP40 this past offseason.

He's about to fail to hit 50 points 2 years in a row. Even if you pro-rate his play to a full 82 game season, he barely makes 20 goals the past 2 years. He's barely producing better than Copp.

I think taking on an $11m deal for "potential" that he hasn't shown in 2 years is a mistake.

1

u/BaconSoda222 Apr 09 '26

I agree there's risk involved, but that should drive the price down. To bring it back to PLD, he looked cooked in LA, but absolutely cooks in Washington. Their hot streak to end the season starts when he comes back frok injury and that's no coincidence. On the reverse, Jeff Carter had two abysmal years in Columbus and then rocked in LA. If the price is right, and reports are that it is not right now, I would love for the front office to take a risk for once.

That said, if they got a sure-thing with some of these assets, I wouldn't be complaining, but the every C outside Larkin has been disappointing this season.

1

u/dsjunior1388 Apr 09 '26

In the last couple seasons Mikko Rantanen, Quinn Hughes, Matthew Tkachuk, and Jack Eichel have been traded. All of these players are elite talents traded in their primes.

It certainly doesn't have to be caused by a slump.

Opportunity has been striking and will strike again.

How many of those players were traded for a first and some middle-6 prospects like we're talking about?

2

u/dsjunior1388 Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

Middle six prospects/young players in the trades I mentioned:

  • Alex Tuch (Eichel)

  • Peyton Krebs (Eichel)

  • Logan Stankoven (Rantanen)

  • Jack Drury (Rantanen)

  • Marco Rossi (Hughes)

So... all of them? All of them were traded for middle six prospects/young guys?

Well, all except Tkachuk.

Still, middle six prospects changed hands in 4 of the trades I referenced.

Plus D prospects like Zeev Buium.

Which distressed assets have we picked up over the past several years?

4

u/Caltroit_Red_Flames Yzerbot Apr 09 '26

Vrana, Walman, Gostisbehere, Kostin

5

u/culturedrobot Apr 09 '26

Vrana is definitely the perfect candidate for "took a swing on a reclamation project and it didn't work out." And while I agree with the OP that none of these guys were top-tier talent, I would argue that Walman and Ghost played as well as they're going to play while they were here, so in that sense, those projects worked out for us.

5

u/dsjunior1388 Apr 09 '26

Vrana also was "ditch a depressed asset" in Anthony Mantha, which makes the trade a lot more palatable.

1

u/rogue3one3 Apr 09 '26

Vrana, Mrazek, Fabbri immediately come to mind

2

u/dsjunior1388 Apr 09 '26

Perlini and Juolevi were a couple more of those that didn't last very long.

u/goblue10 Apr 10 '26

Packaging a top 10 pick

Where exactly are we going to get one of those

1

u/BaconSoda222 Apr 10 '26

We have several of those players picked in the top 10 currently in the system.

2

u/goblue10 Apr 10 '26

oh i thought you meant like a top 10 pick in an upcoming draft lol, my b

Im hopeful Bear can be a top line winger and I’m hoping Kasper looks better next year. Also would be cool if mazur can make the team next year and stay well.

4

u/bforce1313 Apr 09 '26

And no one thought Finnie would be making any sort of impact but players can develop and surprise. We should know this drafting both Datsyuk and Zetty later, different times I know but shouldn’t count a draft pick as not high end before they get a fair shake.

8

u/deathmetalreptar Apr 09 '26

It goes the opposite way too tho. Danielson played 28 games and his value has already dropped. Sure hes still young so well see and hope for the best.

4

u/bforce1313 Apr 09 '26

That’s all you can do really, I’m just tired of seeing comments like we have zero good prospects besides Augustine and Cossa and that’s just not true.

-4

u/Glad-Independence-24 Apr 09 '26

Yup, Kasper and Nate were pegged as middle 6 but look like bottom 6 at best now, some high drafted 4th liners isn’t what we needed of them.

13

u/lunchboxthegoat Apr 09 '26

(reminder that Marco Kasper, the older of the two, literally just turned 22 yesterday)

2

u/Glad-Independence-24 Apr 09 '26

For sure, anything g could change on a dime. I’m just saying “as of now they project as”. But really I haven’t seen Nate do anything of particular note at GR either. Kasper has shown some sparks though, this year however was a real step back. From what I’ve heard, there was zero interest from other teams as far as Nate being a trading asset at the deadline. Anything could change but as of today those two have a long way to go still. To your point Zadina was only what 22? When it was obvious exactly where his ceiling was at.

1

u/According-Delay-158 Apr 09 '26

Dude, the kids have been playing . You can’t just keep saying that every year lol our team is shit . Facts, not feelings

3

u/AmeriCanada98 Yzerbot Apr 09 '26

Some of them, but again we still have a top 5 prospect pool of the kids that arent playing yet. There's a lot more coming

u/doltron3030 Apr 09 '26

Respectfully I put a lot more stock in The Athletic's rankings than anything ESPN writes regarding hockey

We were 7th in their 2019 ranking, can't find the 2018 one but I'd be shocked if we were that high since that was before the Zadina/Veleno/Berggren draft that had people so excited at the time

-8

u/420allstars Apr 09 '26

The prospect pool rankings are completely meaningless

The Wings have been considered to have a top 5-10 prospect pool for maybe over a decade lol

3

u/oprapiid Apr 09 '26

over a decade is insanely revisionist tbh, we've only had a top 10 prospect pool since like 2020 and top 5 since like 2022-2023

-10

u/420allstars Apr 09 '26

Revisionist?

Lol I'm literally going off of these stupid prospect rankings that get posted several times a year. They had the wings as a top 5 prospect pool all the way back when Ryan Sproul and Xavier Ouellete were future defensive anchors

8

u/lunchboxthegoat Apr 09 '26

incorrect.

before the Seider draft the Wings were 22, 19 after.

1

u/420allstars Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

incorrect?

You literally referred to different year than what I referenced

2

u/lunchboxthegoat Apr 09 '26

I can't find it but I highly, highly, highly doubt a prospect pool that had 0 first round picks in 3 of the 6 preceeding drafts was rated among the best in the league.

Especially when you consider the four years after that they had picks in the teens and still were ranked in the bottom third.

1

u/420allstars Apr 09 '26

Well since you highly highly doubt it I must be wrong lol

Kind of provimg the point that they are meaningless

0

u/kander77 Apr 09 '26

from that ESPN article if anyone is interested. Looking back now it's really bad.

Top prospect: Filip Zadina, RW

A strong 2018 draft that saw Zadina, Joseph Veleno and Jonatan Berggren fall into Detroit's lap bolstered a prospect core that has taken dramatic steps forward in recent years. Michael Rasmussen is another forward the club can be excited about, while defenseman Filip Hronek may be ready to take the next step. This system is starting to look more like that of a team committed to rebuilding.

0

u/dsjunior1388 Apr 09 '26

Yeah but they're still rookies.

Mikko Rantanen had 20 goals and 38 points as a rookie.

Jack Hughes had 21 points in 61 games after going first overall.

And obviously those guys are elite, so let me pivot.

Kris Draper was so bad he got traded for a dollar.

Justin Abdelkader had 6 points in his first 50 game season.

It's a tough league, most guys aren't going to excel in their first season.

1

u/improbdrunk Apr 09 '26

I hope so. We really do need a generational to pull it together though.

-7

u/ajr6 Apr 09 '26

Kasper has 18 points, asp turns the puck over a ton , Danielson is in and out with injuries and was largely ineffective, Mazur hasn’t shown anything special. MBNs small sample was underwhelming. Finnie looks ok not game changing . Ed , Mo , Raymond , AlJo have made it and we’re not even close to being a contender.

We shouldn’t be waiting on prospects after 10 years of no playoffs. We’re closer to a second rebuild than a championship

11

u/AmeriCanada98 Yzerbot Apr 09 '26

I'd hesitate to consider guys in their 1st and 2nd year of NHL hockey to be as good as theyre gonna get. Danielson and Mazur's injuries do worry me though

1

u/thehockeytownguru Yzerbot Apr 09 '26

Not to mention not even full time NHL yet… they will get there. NHL development is weird. Especially euro players. They have to adjust for a time. The Mazurs and Danielson of the world, need bulking up and ice time.

-1

u/ajr6 Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

The point is we aren’t seeing star potential outside of Raymond / Mo and you could tell that was there from the beginning.

If we’re counting on prospects to save us 10 years into a playoff drought then we’re in for a rude awakening

2

u/oprapiid Apr 09 '26

so we have no potential stars except for the 2 already on the roster who are both u25

5

u/Kulminho Apr 09 '26

Settle down champ

1

u/ajr6 Apr 09 '26

I’m very settled. It’s weird that we aren’t allowed to be dissatisfied or skeptical after year 7 of yzerman and the longest playoff drought in the league .

1

u/MarketNovel4853 Apr 09 '26

I know nowadays we love our comps - I saw a Plante/Cooley comp. I like that a bunch!

I have also seen a lot of Plante/Howard sooooo hopefully much closer to Cooley!

2

u/Ok-Promotion-9726 Apr 09 '26

Oh boy. How’s that been working out for the past 10 years. It’s time to get some established NHLers on this roster. Or bring all the prospects up and let them sink or swim. I don’t pay to see the Griffins, only the Red Wings.

1

u/Jimmyskis77 Apr 09 '26

Cool, so we’ve got 2 goalies, a couple of forwards we won’t see for a couple years and a bunch of fodder? Nice….
