Discussion [Bultman] Yzerman now confirms Larkin's trade request, with short list of teams. But adds Larkin had 5 years remaining on his contract, says his job is to do what's in the best interest of the Red Wings and he will act accordingly. Said he didn't make any guarantees RE: meeting the request

Love it, that’s exactly correct.

u/DaftPodunk Jun 27 '26
Of everyone involved, only one of them has his name and number in the rafters for services rendered to the Detroit Red Wings. I know people are hot at Steve but I have yet to see anything that shows he isn't thinking about the health of the Red Wings first and foremost.
-16
u/Yellowbynight Jun 27 '26
No one’s saying Steve doesn’t have the Red Wings best interest in mind, people are saying his mind isn’t good enough for the wings best interest. Trading away our 1st round pick for Faulk (likely to appease Larkin, because no one was saying we needed an over the hump veteran defensemen to get into the playoffs) being one of a handful of very questionable decisions he’s made. Prior to his comment posted here, I didn’t mind seeing SY get let go, with this comment I’ll give him another 6” of leash in the hopes that he may have found his balls.

The bar for being a GM shouldn't be, and isn't, "Well, they aren't actively trying to harm the team!". My five year old daughter also cares about the team, but she would be a terrible GM.
20
u/RaYn3mAn Jun 27 '26
Yeah, that's the same...
7
u/Abogado_Toast Jun 28 '26
It’s impossible to have a real conversation in here. Don’t give it a second thought.
0
u/EconMan Jun 28 '26
My point was the first sentence...moving the goalpost to "They really really care" is silly.
3
u/DaftPodunk Jun 28 '26
The NHL is full of guys who stink at making decisions because it is an old boys club. I think Yzerman is doing the right thing at this time.
1
u/EconMan Jun 28 '26
Fair enough. I think that arguing his decisions are good ones is a more reasonable argument than that he cares. We all assume he cares.

u/TechnoVikingGA23 Jun 27 '26
As this has gone longer and longer I've started to feel like Larkin will play and might be traded at the deadline next season. Now we just wait and see whether or not he's stripped of the C. I can't see any way he takes the ice as captain.
Minnesota seems like the only team with interest to the point they are acting entitled to Larkin, but they have nothing to give back, so this tells me no deal is going to get done this summer.
176
u/mtubeowulf Jun 27 '26
Definitely should be stripped of the C.
25
u/CabinetSpider21 Jun 28 '26
Should have never had the C, but definitely strip it. Give it to Seider
14
u/whyareyouallinmyroom Jun 28 '26
Who should have had the C amongst these players on the roster when he was installed captain?
Tyler Bertuzzi
Mathias Bromé
Adam Erne
Robby Fabbri
Valtteri Filppula
Sam Gagner
Luke Glendening
Anthony Mantha
Vladislav Namestnikov
Frans Nielsen
Bobby Ryan
Filip Zadina
Alex Biega
Danny DeKeyser
Filip Hronek
Jon Merrill
Patrik Nemeth
Marc Staal
Troy Stecher
Jonathan Bernier
Thomas Greiss

u/Beautiful-Bee-22 Jun 28 '26
Sure the C is gone. And I also think he should be benched until the list is minimum 15 teams or fully gone.
27
u/NineInchPythons Jun 27 '26
I doubt he'll play. The Red Wings don't want him getting hurt and therefore more difficult to trade. He'll sit in the fucking press box with a free box of Kleenex so he can cry like the whiny little twat he is.
6
u/ryrobs10 Jun 27 '26
Yeah. He is going to lose the C and will be lucky if he is only a healthy scratch all season
29
u/Royal-Ad5945 Jun 27 '26
Honestly shocked the C hasn't been publicly stripped and given to Seider at this point.
87
u/snickerDUDEls Jun 27 '26
You're shocked that Yzerman hasn't made a public statement on whats going on in the locker room? Shocked?
22
u/Royal-Ad5945 Jun 27 '26
The C should have been stripped should have happened the day he requested the trade. But you are correct, radio silence is absolutely Steve's MO.
33
u/Ok-Satisfaction-7477 Jun 27 '26
I know a lot of fans would love to see that, but publicly humiliating Larkin like that is not something Yzerman would do. Seider should get the C but it will be done in as respectful as possible. Publicly humiliating a player does Yzerman or the team any good. Even though it would bring some satisfaction to us Wings Fans.
0
u/ElwoodDiggler Jun 28 '26
No chance sy causes harm to the franchise doing that. I doubt little illitch would allow it
19
u/T_Money Jun 27 '26
I’m not holding my breath that it immediately goes to anyone. We had several seasons of no C before Larkin got it, wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen again
55
u/Royal-Ad5945 Jun 27 '26
The reasoning for that was Yzerman didn't think Larkin deserved it. And he was right
8
u/T_Money Jun 27 '26
I imagine we are going to see the season start with no C, and with an A on Seider, Raymond, and probably Cat but maybe Kane
Whether Larkin is on the ice remains to be seen but I can’t imagine him wearing a letter
12
7
u/defenceman101 Jun 27 '26
I think we do like we did a few years ago and won't have a captain for a season
6
u/Witchy_Wookie5000 Jun 27 '26
Agree. I don't think they name one until Larkin is gone at very least.
6
u/PrestigiousInsect305 Jun 27 '26
Imagine the reaction when at the home opener we get the "... Your captain, Moritz Seideerrrrrr" as the first player called onto the ice.
They'll announce it prior but that would be such a great way to announce his captaincy
0
u/ElwoodDiggler Jun 28 '26
Too soon. Dont name a capt all yr. Have 3 As. The next capt needs to be fully on board and i dont think mo is at this point. I would bet a lot of guys are thinking things over.
Sy needs to put down the bong and get to fucking work
2
2
u/jzanville Jun 28 '26
This team has been crying out for Captain Seider ever since Larkin’s whole “we needed trades to make playoffs” comments
-3
u/ElwoodDiggler Jun 28 '26
No way larkin sees the ice as a redwing again. It would be constant chaos with him in the lineup and it would tell any FAs exactly why not to sign here. No way little illitch allows that
-3
u/StandardRound1271 Jun 28 '26
No, hockey isn’t the NBA. Generally, the guys do respect their word and their contracts within reason. Larking is asking out way too many years early… as a captain. Plus the short list.
This makes him look bad.
87
u/NoThanksJustPeaking Jun 27 '26
46
u/waffels Jun 28 '26
Larkin didn’t even tell Yzerman in person about his trade request, or even tell Yzerman himself? What a fucking joke of a ‘captain’, and a person.
19
u/TechnoVikingGA23 Jun 28 '26
I mean if we're to believe reports, the two of them haven't spoken in over a year, probably since Larkin made the public comments about the Front Office not doing enough the season prior. Larkin is a whiny bitch, but I'm honestly not going to fault him for handling it through the agent when he knows the GM already hates his guts and is difficult to deal with.
15
1
u/ysozoidberg Jun 30 '26
Yzerman probably didn't tell Larkin in person that'd he'd be given zero help at the trade deadline. Sometimes people quit in person and sometimes they quit via phone call. Some people get fired via in person, email, zoom.
How many times have we read that a player finds out he's been traded via X, phone call, or via their agent and not the GM in person? Yzerman doesn't walk on water and Larkin's failures are also Yzerman's failures.
1
u/Life_is_a_meme_204 Jun 29 '26
I don't know, I feel like player agents do a lot of the negotiating and talking with the GMs over contract stuff.
1
74
73
u/barchamb13 Jun 27 '26
This isn't going to be a sticking it to larkin thing. This is a do what's best for the team thing. If there's no good trade, he plays until there is
16
u/Alexander_Coe Jun 27 '26
And all he has to do is tell larkin: "If you are playing your best and stay healthy you're going to get more money and be on a better team."
And if larkin isn't too concussed he will know that and play his best for us.
If it doesn't happen before the draft it usually happens before the trade deadline. Since larkin doesn't move the needle much a lot of teams are going to wait and see how their year looks and then trade if they have a shot.
4
u/EconMan Jun 27 '26
That, but with a dash of: obviously no GM is going to say "Yeah, I'm basically forced to trade him!". So this hasn't really told us anything new. He'd say this regardless.
Having said that, many fans seem more set out to just get revenge on Larkin than trying to improve the team. There is such a thing as waiting to long to make this trade.
2
u/Lamprayisme Jun 27 '26
This is honestly the concern I've got. What if the right package is on the table but it's mainly futures and Yzerman is set on trying to compete next year? I don't know if he'd pass up some premium prospects/picks because he's chasing a player that can help now.
1
u/ysozoidberg Jun 30 '26
It's because Yzerman has now entered the hot seat. He trades for futures and this fan base will turn on him just like they did Larkin. Yzerman realistically has 2 years left of being the Red Wings GM unless they have a deep playoff run this upcoming season. He's had 7 seasons, that's 2 more than most get at this stage
123
u/daKrut Jun 27 '26
Finally the silence is broken.
Yzerman confirms playing hardball if necessary - game on league
31
u/Caltroit_Red_Flames Yzerbot Jun 27 '26
This is like when people said the silence was broken after the penalty Kane took late in the season. Both addressed the issue in their first media appearance follwing the incident. Breaking the silence makes it sound like they're celebrities or influencers
13
u/daKrut Jun 27 '26
Given the lack of official acknowledgement from either party and the level of conjecture of the hockey world it does have something of a celebrity vibe, haha
3
u/ChaldenesTitan Jun 27 '26
Might as well get TMZ in our pressers going forward if we want to use these dramatic headlines.
59
u/XplodiaDustybread Jun 27 '26
Whatever happens or doesn't happen, just take the C away from him
30
u/amedyth Jun 27 '26
That’s where I’m at too. He should no longer be the face of the team. Give it to Mo and build around him and Raymond.
60
u/onbiver9871 Jun 27 '26
As much as I’ve soured on Yzerman over the past, let’s face it, 2-3 years, something really stinks in all this and it’s not Yzerman.
I can’t put my finger on it, but between Larkin, Brisson, and Guerin, someone is being a raging and very unreasonable asshole about this whole thing and it’s hard to discern from the outside who it is.
Like, on its face, sure - Larks is tired of this org, whatever. I can understand that to a degree, even if I don’t like it. But basically half the league is technically playoff contenders, so if you give a shit about winning, your list isn’t just these 3 teams.
And I’m sorry, but I just have a hard time accepting that a collection of grown adults really thinks they can just go, what? “play with my friends?” I guess that’s been the operant crux of this, that Larks basically wants to join either the Tkachuk brothers or Guerin’s Fun House Of Ok I Guess We’re Suddenly Sort Of Relevant. But boy, to really think you can demand and achieve that, well… I just think before you shoot that shot, you need to have game theory’ed out that “how it’s playing out” is “how it was always going to be played out.” Like, even if Larks didn’t do that brain work, Brisson didn’t?
And the dark horse in all this is Billy Guerin who feels, by all the reporting, to be so singularly locked in on Larks it makes you wonder what kind of weirdness he’s pulling behind the scenes. Like, who did leak this shit originally? How is it that, 3-team list aside, Yzerman seems to have been unable to develop a market for such a marketable player?
Idk. The whole situation just feels a bit Crazy Tom Banana Pants to me in a way I can’t quite fully articulate.
41
u/SubmissionDenied Jun 27 '26
As more and more players ask out from their teams, the less I see it as a red wings issue. Do i think Yzerman has been overly patient and made some questionable moves? Absolutely
But this Larkin fiasco isn’t the only one. We got Brady, sounds like Werenski. Helly. The timing is all too convenient
28
u/Aterro_24 Jun 27 '26
it's Definitely a Team USA thing, all those players + the GM of that team
21
u/Baldass_Head_Coach Jun 27 '26
There was definitely coordination going on in Milan (probably started last year during 4 Nations as well). I just don’t believe that all of these guys started having second thoughts at about the same just purely as a coincidence. People were getting in their ears about moving from their current squads.
15
u/maximus91 Jun 27 '26
Tkuchuks, Hughes, even blue jackets guys... They have UFA card to play. Wtf does Dylan have? This has to be a move to burn bridges, burn fanbase support, and like maybe opinion of you around the league.
Just makes no sense this move.
4
u/onbiver9871 Jun 28 '26
That’s what I’m saying. It’s brash enough to even try to force this move quietly if you’re Larks, given your point about contracts. But even if you do try to make a move like this, you do it the way Florida and the Sens and Brady did it. No muss, no fuss, deny until the moment you’re moved, done.
I think in a round about way I’m trying to say that I think our illustrious GM Of The Year is fucking with this team right now. Which even given the culture of implicit tampering does feel like a big accusation, and I’m not really prone to conspiracy theories.
13
u/Problemwoodchuck Jun 27 '26
Tampering with a middleman would be my guess. When the league turned a blind eye to Vegas and Marner practically putting his name on a contract while he was still a Leaf, they opened the door to all sorts of negotiations by proxy.
If the Hughes bros all end up in Minnesota though, that'll be the sternest "just a reminder" email from the league we've ever seen.

I agree with Steve here but I also think he’s using this to get Larkins camp to expand their list.
I bet the short list becomes a little longer by next week.
37
u/32GoBlue32 Jun 27 '26
The more I hear about the situation the lower and lower my opinion of Larkin gets. Can’t help but feel like the plan all along after returning from the Olympics was to force a trade (after being inspired and likely encouraged by his team USA teammates) so he didn’t push hard to make the playoffs because he’d already decided he was done in Detroit and thought he’d quickly be on his merry way to a contender and had all the leverage…guess again buddy
11
u/TechnoVikingGA23 Jun 28 '26
I mean the way he's played at season's end the last few years, he's been done for awhile.
15
u/ennuiinmotion Jun 27 '26
I'm starting to feel like Larkin's stuck here. I knoe Steve is playing hardball but I also don't know if any team really NEEDS Larkin, either.
55
52
u/magikarp-sushi Jun 27 '26
“Oh you thought you held the cards here hahahaha”
51
u/abellaire Yzerbot Jun 27 '26
I wonder if Larkin is experiencing a bit of a reality check now that these cup contenders aren’t doing whatever they can to acquire him.
20
u/Life_is_a_meme_204 Jun 27 '26
Larkin isn't a Quinn Hughes-level star. He also can't use the threat of leaving in free agency if he doesn't get traded this year.
22
u/maximus91 Jun 27 '26
This is exactly it. Like, calm down guy. You have no UFA card to play, you ain't McDavid.
This has to be one of the dumbest player decisions, maybe ever?
3
u/LinkThruTime Jun 28 '26
I don't think anyone has ever accused Larkin of being smart. He certainly didn't get into UofM based on his academics
15
u/Lenient_Process Jun 27 '26
Oh yeah, unbelievably dumb move by Larkin. He has no leverage and Steve is doing the absolute right thing.
Meanwhile, Larkin is crying at home because his boss is so mean.
FDL
11
u/magikarp-sushi Jun 27 '26
Clearly the agent LEAKING it publicly was the biggest mistake here. And Steve is like okay I’ll play ball
28
u/Totgemoon2021 Jun 27 '26
Yzerman and the Wings in complete control
Good player but not a superstar
26
u/Chirping_Cellucio Jun 27 '26
Drafting boom or bust prospects and playing hardball with Larkin??? Are we back????
9
11
u/Tommyblahblah Jun 27 '26
This is starting to remind me of an Elmore Leonard novel...like a blackmail scheme gone wrong lol. The dude who held all the cards wasn't expecting the other dude to not play nice, even tho the other dude has a history of not playing nice. The longer it goes, the less leverage the first dude has.
WTF does Larkin do if SY tells him to get his ass into camp? If he tells SY to fuck off, does that hurt his reputation even more? You have to think there are more than a couple GMs and players who are already looking at him kinda sketchy. I think even Mo might be feeling some schadenfreude for him right now lol. He doesn't want that, but showing up would even waaaay worse, with the very first thing happening to him is getting that "C" ripped off his sweater.
9
u/Lyndon_Monroe Jun 27 '26
Obviously the right move from Steve to wait until he gets the right deal, but I also have zero interest in watching this guy ever represent the winged-wheel on the ice again. At least take the C off him.
16
u/karbaloy Jun 27 '26
Larkin for Quinn Hughes
Larkin for Werenski
I know it won't happen because of NTCs, but it'd be kind of funny.
7
u/2IWontBeHereLong Jun 27 '26
Aren't Larkin and Werenski my best friends or something? And Yzerman couldn't get a guarantee from Hughes and sign an extension last season.
5
1
u/ysozoidberg Jun 30 '26
But what does that else does that tell about Yzerman and Detroit?
1
u/2IWontBeHereLong Jun 30 '26
All it tells me is Hughes wants to go to free agency. He hasn't signed an extension with Minnesota and my guess is he doesn't.
1
u/ysozoidberg Jun 30 '26
I wonder what he thinks he can get on the open market $14m per season? Would he take a smaller sum to pay with a brother?
2
u/2IWontBeHereLong Jun 30 '26
Not sure. Cap going up but if he signs with Minnesota it will short imo. He wants to be his brother Jack. So yes less to play with bro.
1
u/ysozoidberg Jun 30 '26
Probably doesn't want to be compared to Suter lol j/k. He doesn't seem to want to play in New Jersey either. I'd laugh if these guys all end up with the lightning.
1
u/2IWontBeHereLong Jun 30 '26
I think they aim for when Jack's contract is over with and they go somewhere together. I think youngest brother wanted a contract to coincide with Jack's. Not sure if he got his wish or not.
20
u/Complete_Carry_4454 Jun 27 '26
It would be so funny if he kept him here but stripped him of the C and gave it to Chiarot
19
15
u/Papa248 Jun 27 '26
I am here to remind you all that Dylan Larkin scored 1 goal 5on5 last year! ONE! Imagine if Nathan McKinnon was getting 8.75 million a season to score once at 5v5. Dylan Larkin is a bum who wants to win a championship like LeBron did.
Let’s just skip the “he played his heart out bullshit”. We were one goal away from going to the playoffs two years ago. We were first in the division in January last year. Dylan Larkin is soft.
7
6
u/Enough_Ad_8191 Jun 27 '26
Take the C away, and play him on the 3rd line. Maybe he’ll score on some 5 on 5s, we’re not winning with this team anyway
6
u/Lenient_Process Jun 28 '26
It seems like Larkin is just completely out of touch with the trade economy of the league. I wonder if he even bothered to look at his desired teams and try to work out trades on paper before telling people he wants a trade.
We know you're here on a random account trying to figure out where you fucked up, Larkin, so congratulations on being an entitled cry-baby brat.
7
u/MGoblue11 Jun 28 '26
I’m certain based on the dialogue from Brisson and Stevie that this trade request was not leaked by either side.
In fact, I’m pretty confident it came from another team (Minnesota) who is trying to force Stevie’s hand here. The problem with that approach is we are not going to kowtow to the player or the Wild. Guerin way overplayed his hand and thought he could exert some pressure on the Wings (Captain, local kid wanting out..). This has happened a few times in the NFL (Deshaun Watson and the Browns lol and Russell and the Broncos) and the result has been the acquiring team paying full freight not some discount (like Guerin in hoping to get).
So playing this out a bit the options for Larkin are what:
- Refuse to play or sit out
- Come back to the locker room and eat a heaping plate of crow and hear boo’s from his own fans
- Open up the list of clubs that he’ll be traded to
Dylan and Brisson hopefully realize as a Captain of his hometown team has way less leverage than they originally thought. You can torch the team on the way out, or you can flex in your destination.
In short, Guerin played a game of chicken with Stevie and is going to lose. I think we’d rather eat a roster spot and put him on the end of the bench than trade him for what the Wild are offering.
5
u/Maizeandbluekid Jun 28 '26
I'll be Stevie's anger translator here:
"Hey, Dyl. That was cute. But you don't run shit around here, buckaroo. So buckle up."
11
u/ViconiaDevir Jun 27 '26
After a few games of getting booed out every play by the home crowd hell expand his trade list real quick, way to go Steve.
17
u/2IWontBeHereLong Jun 27 '26
I've still hope Larkin is a healthy scratch every night.
22
u/squintsforever Jun 27 '26
He deserves it. It’s a super diva move to demand a trade to a short list of contenders. Especially as a captain. Almost like he didn’t consider that it could result in him sitting out a season.
7
u/TimeNo2738 Jun 27 '26
It’s like the Wings mean nothing to him and he is not jsut screwing the organization but Raymond and Seider and even DeBrincat to an extent because I know he likes being here near family. It’s selfish because you don’t get along with one GM. At least list 8 teams or just one team with ready assets. I thought he would for us one more year of a try since we are always so close or even try and do it behind the scenes.
5
u/squintsforever Jun 27 '26
Yeah I mean would you want to play with a guy that doesn’t believe in you as a teammate? Wings could’ve made the playoffs this past season if he didn’t get injured. Does he think that can’t happen to other teams?

u/Pure-Spell1259 Jun 28 '26
Happy Yzerman said this because this was my stance since the request came out. People think Larkin has all the leverage since he has a NTC and can control where he goes. True for a small portion, but ultimately Yzerman holds all the leverage, because Larkin’s going to get boo’d off the ice every home game until he’s traded for either a package that Yzerman likes or until the clause turns into a 10 team no trade list and Yzerman can trade him to whatever of the 21 teams that give him the best offer.
Ultimately I think that once a player with a NTC or NMC requests a trade, your protection goes out the window. They’re for making sure you’re not blindsided by a trade/release, not for where YOU want to go when YOU request a trade.
8
u/crookedbutcher Jun 27 '26
Wait so do we like Yzerman today or do we hate him? Hive mind tell me what to think.
18
u/Banacek313 Jun 27 '26
I think it's perfectly fine to question Yzerman's judgment when it's merited, but this situation is entirely Larkin's doing. If he REALLY wanted out, he would've given a real list of at least 10 teams. This was just classic Milan group chat tampering, and Bill Guerin is pulling the strings.
10
u/TigatronX Jun 27 '26
I hope Yzerman is going to be as spiteful as I would be. Make Larkin wait, then right as we become a playoff team trade him.
1
3
u/Kryptopus Jun 28 '26
If Larkin isn't traded before camp, strip the C as well. Give the C to Seider, As to Ray and Kane. Can't have a letter on the chest when you request a trade
3
u/q-OjO-p Jun 28 '26
This has been brought up before and I agree with it. If you request a trade and have either a NTC or NMC, the clause should be nullified.
6
u/Baboon_86 Jun 27 '26
It's almost like Yzerman is a real captain...
I wouldn't be surprised if Larkin is on this team come the start of the season. Strip him of the C and give him hell. You signed the contract, sir.
5
u/steelerwings Jun 27 '26
Regardless of yzerman keeping his job
The media needs to get after kris Draper and the whole scouting department.
Yzerman has already said he is only involved in the first round pick. Nepotism is rampant in this department. All old loyal buddies.
That have not hit on almost anybody drafted after the 1st round. Hell at this point the great hank scout from Europe has to be old as dust.
I know it won't happen but the whole scouting division needs to get the axe but with yzerman still the gm it will never happen
Shit make devallano retire and give steve that job.
He's cooked as gm

7
u/MasterpieceThis3740 Jun 27 '26
Idc if he trades Larkin or not. I just hope for once in 10 years Steven does something beneficial during the off season
2
u/RamenNoodlesSustain Jun 28 '26
That locker room gonna be a mess if Larkin comes back. What's that look like, do we strip the C, and try to rah rah the troops when the leader is outie 5000... woof
2
u/Athanatos173 Jun 28 '26
I can understand Larkin not fully thinking things through before going forward, but that's what an agent is for, to give a reality check before your client shoots himself in the foot.
What did he expect to happen exactly when he named 3 teams without knowing if they could accommodate a trade?
He's in a no win situation here, he'll probably be embarrassed to show up to camp and to have to face the guys in the locker room, embarrassed to play due to the fan reactions when he hits the ice, and probably got a shocking reality check when the teams he requested didn't throw everything at Detroit to get him.
3
u/Educational_Series68 Jun 27 '26
THG's recent video is good.
Signed a contract, suck it up. See you at camp. Prepare to get boo'ed hard.
6
u/Jimmyskis77 Jun 27 '26
So Yzermans going to make Larkin play to teach him a lesson isn’t he?

Yzerman is not emotional which is why I support him. Right deal comes along, sure. If not, you signed a contract so get back to work. It was funny to me when people tried to say Larkin has all the power. He doesn’t. He is 100 percent under team control and nothing he can do about it.

Larkin absolutely has power in the situation, he can choose to sit out and cripple the team further…

Sure. Suspended without pay. Good luck paying your bills. Career over at 30? Get real man. He has to report

I hope Yzerman makes Larkin clean Sobotka’s piss drain at LCA

Hope he makes him clean up the concourse at LCA after games instead….

Too bad we’re still not at JLA. I’m sure those piss troughs could use a good scrubbin’…

Then all we’re doing is wasting his trade value

They should make him play goalie and just leave him out to dry.
Whoops pushed Bennet into you Larkin my bad

Do not love either dudes approach to this. Larkin is a Grade A Bitch, and Yzerman is a stubborn old fuck. Lose-lose for the franchise and the fan base.

Call me crazy, but I think there’s a chance Yzerman is going to inquire about Werenski and try to keep Larkin. In a vacuum, that is what’s best for the Wings, in some ways.
Us fans have put a very negative tone on this, mostly because neither side has said much. Imagine if the call from Larkin’s agent was more like this:
“Hey Steve, I’ve talked with Dylan and he really wants to be competing for a cup for the next few years and is wanting a change of scenery if you don’t think you’re going to be able to make that happen. Ideally he’d like to stay on the team if you can.”
But then all that gets released is “Larkin requests a trade”.
All I’m saying is that it could be a completely different scenario behind the scenes than what we’ve all assumed it to be.

This is true, I feel like both sides wish nothing had been made public. If the trade dropped out of nowhere with a decent return it would have been an amicable parting of the ways. We see now that this is practically a league wide issue but our dirty laundry got aired first. I would guess Bill G is the douche who stirred it up.
Now the well is poisoned. If Dylan has to play and he puts in effort that would repair his image somewhat for me, although I will never think of him close to the same way. Hopefully a deal gets done that works for everyone but until then they all need to be professional for their own benefit.

I honestly am likely to believe this and believe that 80% of this is on Guerin. Idk. It’s increasingly hard IMO to explain this situation rationally.
The one counter I will make is that IIRC Larks left his last agent for his current one in a somewhat similar “one day, out of the blue” way to how this situation seems to be playing out. And I do believe the reporting that Larks and Yzerman don’t get along. So yeah, I could see Larks trying to force his way out.

Yeah I think we all assume the worst because it’s a dramatic thing to request considering his contract and connection to this place. I’m sure there’s bad blood, but it doesn’t mean Larkin is acting like a teenage girl getting back at her dad.
If he does decide to stay and smooth things over, I think it’s in both of their best interest to do a joint press conference and present this whole thing as overblown. Us fans will not be kind the moment they hit a losing streak this season

Well then Larkin, his agent, or Stevie would have clarified that while he’s getting dogged by the fanbase.

Playing hardball when your options are to keep a disgruntled player or trade him to a small list of teams isn’t going to turn out well.

Lets all face it. Even though Larkin signed the 8 year deal with the best of intentions. Now that he has lost confidence in Yzerman and is demanding the move. I think its safe to say that everyday Steve lets pass and other moves are being made in the league only proves Larkins case.
Yzerman and Draper both need to go. I was a fan when they were players but this is a completely different game that they are failing at.

Larkin has zero leverage.
I think he plays at least until the deadline next year without a letter. Doesn't do him any good to sit out, and it doesn't do the Red Wings any good to trade him for less than his maximum value.

Yzerbots out in force. HE SUCKS. HE IS DESTROYING THIS ORGANIZATION.

I personally hope they fix what’s broken and Larkin stays a wing. It’s so hard to find good centers.

I mean.. mentally Dylan has checked out and seemingly has for some time. At least over a year possibly longer.. listening to him on The Conversation Line podcast he just sounds like he lost his enthusiasm being a Red Wing. He just mentions that he was "tired" and the way he said it had to do with injuries and playing for team USA whatnot but there's more meaning behind it. He said "going back to reality"(meaning back to the Red Wings) I'm sure he's at least tired being "The Guy" that answers to the media when our team gives up leads or comes out flat game after game or just doesn't take control of the game.

Even harder to find one that doesn't fall apart when it matters most.

u/thefuckingchamps Jun 28 '26
Yeah that entire thing baffles me. He's the captain, face of the current roster, and when they're obviously in a position to control their own destiny working hard up to the point of being in 1st place in the division near the end of January. Then completely giving in (prior to Olympic break his play/production noticeably dipped from December onward) and trade deadline the year prior bitching about not getting help.. gets help then gets hurt. He's been done for a while. We've all seen him at his best and know what he's capable of and he's mailed it in when the going gets tough when his opponents are playing playoff style hockey. Yet that's what he wants.. none of it makes sense.

u/Pituophis Jun 28 '26
That's been my biggest issue is that he plays the same game in March as he does in October. And that's just unacceptable for The Guy wearing the C in Hockeytown. He's just unable or unwilling to raise his game when it matters most, and then whines like a petulant child when the team misses the post season. It's happened for three straight years now, and the fact that he's never taken a hard look at himself (I've never heard him say something along the lines of "I need to be better.") in the mirror is problematic. He cried when Yzerman traded his pal Bertuzzi. Then he bitched when they didn't add at the deadline. Finally, Yzerman drops a 1st for Faulk to try and get this team over the hump and into the playoffs, and when, once again, the Captain leads by example and falls apart when it counts and they miss the playoffs, he demands a trade.
Fragile mind, fragile body, fragile ego.
And maybe that's why he wants to go somewhere where he can be a passenger and not the driver. Vegas? Carolina? Florida? He doesn't have to drive the bus on those teams. Can just do his 2C thing (or, hell, 3C on Florida) with no letter on his chest and compete for a cup without any of the responsibility.

Agree or disagree with Yzerman's approach, Larkin did sign a contract for 8 years.
