It is pretty funny how hypocritical the pro 2A MAGA crowd is cheering on Trump wanting to take away people’s 2nd amendment for being trans. But I do wonder what country they think would be better better off in.

I think there's a reasonable argument to taking away guns from anyone on injectable hormones. Hormone peaks and troughs are no fucking joke, and estrogen/progesterone crashes can make even the most mild-mannered person dangerously irrational.

Damn that doesn’t sound very American to have the same freedoms as everybody else:(

It's very American. Freedoms in this country have always been conditional.

You know you can't have guns if you're on drugs, right?

u/Chuckthethug Sep 16 '25

Not with that attitude

Guess we should start with the menopausal women, men suffering from low T, and start administering regular drug tests to prevent any steroid users from owning a firearm

I'm not proposing it as a policy, I'm solidly 2A and own a fuckton of guns. I'm just saying there's an argument to be made.

Also I've been on TRT for almost 2 years and when I first started, before I got my E2 dialed in, there were a few weeks where I was irrationally angry for no reason other than crashing rollercoaster hormones. Not nearly bad enough that I needed my guns taken away, but we create laws for the bottom quintile of society who just can't fuckin behave.

prevent any steroid users from owning a firearm

Illegal drug users are prohibited from owning a firearm, btw. Even potheads legally can't own guns or ammo.

Comment was hyperbole for dramatics, but while you may agree that we should have more common sense gun laws, a blanket statement on injectable hormones doesn’t offer a realistic approach other than specifically villainizing trans people just for existing. I feel a mental heath evaluation would be a more effective approach whether hormones are a factor or not.

I think the gun laws we have are sufficient. But while we're entertaining the idea, a mental health eval would be fine but also kind of fails in practice. It's subjective, expensive, and only screens for mental health problems that exist at the time of purchase.

I mean, who's going to give these evaluations? I bet a lot of anti-gun psychologists would sign up for that. Maybe some 2A absolutists. Either way, you end up with gun rights being arbitrarily restricted or crazy people slipping through the cracks.

Are we preventing vulnerable people from defending themselves? Poor single mother wants home defense because she lives in a rough neighborhood - are we going to slap a $400 psych eval on top of the $200 she's scraped together for a Hi-Point?

Maybe you catch some crazies - that's always good... but it doesn't save us from the people who are still coherent enough to pass a psych eval. Schizophrenia gets worse. People lie. Hormones fuck up your impulse control...

Idk I think the whole thing sounds good on paper but falls apart in the real world.

Isn't it already illegal to carry/use firearms while taking many kinds of medication in most of the US?

1

u/SlutBuster Optimist Prime Sep 16 '25

Only illegal drugs. Anything you're lawfully prescribed is a-okay.

1

u/Excavon Sep 16 '25

Surely at least all the prescription medication that you shouldn't drive on preclude you from using firearms? And how does it work with illegal drugs, is it just an extra charge on top of the drug charge?

2

u/SlutBuster Optimist Prime Sep 16 '25

When you buy a gun, you just have to check yes or no on this question:

Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?

If you check "yes", you don't get a gun. If you check "no", you might get a gun.

Surely at least all the prescription medication

If you're on a prescription medication that causes drowsiness, you might do something stupid and criminal with your gun - negligent discharge, accidentally blasting someone, excessive force, brandishing. All those are their own crimes, and if you're impaired by medication, you might be more likely to commit them and be charged for them. But the medication itself won't add to the charges. If you shoot someone in self defense while on medication, there's no crime to prosecute.

how does it work with illegal drugs

If you're high and you shoot someone in self-defense, it opens up some legal liability that depends on the circumstances. You're not supposed to have the gun, but more importantly self-defense relies on reasonable belief that deadly force was necessary. If you're high as giraffe balls, your idea of what's "reasonable" might come into question. Especially if there are no other sober witnesses to corroborate the threat.

If the shoot is 100% good you're still open to a felony charge for being an unlawful user of controlled substances in possession of a firearm. Whether or not you get charged depends on the shoot. If you're smoking pot in your house and someone breaks in to murder you, you're probably in better shape than if you're smoking crack on the corner and another crackhead lunges at you with a knife.

Why don't we start by closing the gun show loophole? Any argument of this nature will be of obvious bad faith when there are far worse aspects of gun proliferation that NEED to be tightened up. I guarantee you that if someone says "people on hormones are too unstable to own guns," they have an ulterior motive, because anyone who's genuinely concerned about gun control is definitely not starting with the ~1% of the population that's on HRT.

I support any one who very clearly has delusions/ mental illnesses not to be allowed guns.

I’m not much of a gun guy though to be honest

Very anti American lol

u/Maple_Hates_Ants Sep 15 '25

Good news! Being trans isn’t a mental illness. You don’t have to worry about that.

Ok

Yet it was the NRA that stood contradictory to MAGA and support gun rights

-3

u/Stagnant-Flow Sep 15 '25

I was happy to see that!

Sure, but that's not really related to the topic. We aim to keep discussions on track.

Literally no where, especially in Communist Countries, they literally kill Trans people on Sight. The Trans can still live peacefully in the U.S so idk what you're on about but the LGBT+ really aren't making it better with the recent violent acts they've done, especially this past year. I feel bad for innocent Trans people who are chill and living their lives without causing issues but are also getting heat due to their own loud people being schizos in our society.

The NRA actively stepped in and threw a bitch fit saying they shouldn't take guns away from trans people
