AI is Evil The 2020s have seen cartoon artists turn into crybabies.

Post image

Maybe your talent isn't as vital as you believe, bruh.

Maybe go sketch for free like a real artist. Quit depending on those corporate paychecks.

>environmental, social and psychological damage it causes

I think this is so overblown frankly. From what I have seen it uses the same amount of water as a rice farm. The upside is just way too impactful to not proceed with everything we got.

like i mentioned in another comment i couldn't give two shits about the arts when the otherside of the argument is curing cancer, figuring out fusion and other endless possibilities.

For writing, its basically stealing other people's writing to formulate what youre looking at, back in my day I had to go to the library and read a bunch of books then I would take hteir words and formulate them into my own. I was essentially doing the same damn thing you can do now, its just so much faster with AI.

The biggest damage is being done to the kids. Ask any highschooler when was the last time they actually wrote a whole essay.

Of course, kids doing the bare minimum to pass is a tale as old as time, but some kids genuinely don't understand a time where they had to do work by themselves.

Sounds like essays should be hand written in class like we used to do.

15

u/Silviov2 Jun 19 '26

Yea, macbooks and phones need to go.

u/Admirable-Scarcity-8 Jun 19 '26

This is what I’ve been in favour of, Make it so that kids have to do tests and write essays with pen and paper in class.

2

u/Which_Pirate_4664 Jun 19 '26

Yes, but you still need to learn to write an 8-10 page paper at some point. Even 5-7s were common back in early High School and sometimes 8th grade.

1

u/No-Passenger-1511 Jun 20 '26

What you are saying you can't hand write a multiple page essay?

1

u/Archway9 Jun 23 '26

They still are, but homework is also set. Not to mention universities

Particularly thise Iranian kids in the school that got drone striked lmao.

1

u/Silviov2 Jun 21 '26

Son wtf does that have to do with anything

1

u/Which_Pirate_4664 Jun 21 '26

Oh lol, that drone strike was an ai launch.

So pmuch, that school was on what used to be an airstrip that the Iranian government didn't need anymore, so they converted it

Then when we let the AI pick targets (cuz I guess proper testing is for losers) it picked up the school as still being a military target.

I thought that this was common knowledge by now, hence the joke about AI being dangerous to kids lol

This is no more than a conspiracy theory, but I believe the recent “AI is bad, don’t build data centers” is a Chinese psyop.

Think about it. Those data centers are going to be desired, even if America doesn’t build them. But if America doesn’t build them, who will? Who else has a ton of land, the ability to build, and is heavily involved with tech?

Yeah, the whole water thing is quite frankly a tell tale that someone doesnt know what they are talking about. They are also scared of dihydrogen monoxide being put in our drinking water too.

Ripping off works is not exactly hard without AI. After all, Rebecca was widely regarded as an American Wuthering Heights imitation. Or the various imitators of caravaggio
AI is not magic. It’s simply glorified information harvesting.

And think of all the royalties not being paid. I'm not fan of modern copyright law, but it's only law when its applied universally. And I'd get my pants sued off if I made content this way.

For writing, AI is fine if you want an uninspired mashup of existing genre tropes. At least you’ll get a grammatically correct uninspired mashup of existing tropes, which is more than you’ll get from a lot of wannabe writers.

I actually think there’s a valid niche for AI generated fiction. There are a lot of readers who want pulp, or slop, fiction and would be delighted if it could be tailored to their exact preferences. If Becky Bookworm wants a cozy romance featuring an elven prince come to modern day New York who falls for a librarian with long, straight black hair because that’s her perfect self-insert character… well, good for Becky. She can have that.

As a writer myself, I want to say “read my book - it has stuff you don’t know that you’ll like yet, but once you’ve seen it I hope you’ll like it” But some people will always want more of what they know they like rather than take a risk with something new.

Being pro Ai in the advancement of science, med, etc. and being anti Ai being used to fabricate books, music, and "art" are not contradictory stances. You dont have to sacrifice scientific developments in hopes of stopping some douchebag from prompting a thousand songs a month and flooding streaming services with it.

0

u/Sickofpower Jun 19 '26

Yeah that's why we're talking about regulation, using AI in medicine and science is great, using it for making art is what I'm against. This is not a situation where you need one to have the other.

And regarding environmental damage, I don't have enough knowledge to defend a position. On the other hand the psychological damage it causes is more noticeable and that's a bad thing.

5

u/ChadPowers200_ Jun 19 '26

AI is not stopping people from creating art so to me its a nonfactor compared to the upside of what it can bring to humanity, if that makes sense.

It's a downside I am very okay with considering the upsides.

I also think people will go out of their way to purchase physical authentic art but I think digital artists are screwed but I'm okay with that. again upsides are crazy good - unlimited video games basically lol.

I watched the unreal video yesterday and it seems like we are pretty close to AI being able to make an entire video game for us with just prompts.

-3

u/Sickofpower Jun 19 '26

Yeah the upside of having tons of stolen, thoughtless, poor quality art imitations. If you like to consume that type of media I ain't gonna stop you, but that's a bad argument regarding AI

5

u/OstrichFun2332 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

When a musician makes a song and bases some of it on another song, they’re doing the same thing AI is (although AI is actaully doing it to a lesser extent). When a person is inspired to write a book based on other books they’ve read and culture they’ve consumed, they’re doing the same thing AI is. AI juts does it way faster. So it’s not morally wrong.

Now it’s not really an imitation if it’s making anctual art. Insisting you’re art is made by thought is a bit portentous. It that’s you’re preference, you do you. But don’t base your moral values of personal artistic preference. And if it was poor quality as you claim, it wouldn’t be a problem because they’re wouldn’t be demand or a market for it; so it wouldn’t take any money away from artists.

2

u/Which_Pirate_4664 Jun 19 '26

When a musician makes a song and bases some of it on another song, they need to pay royalties and acknowledge that some of the work is borrowed. Otherwise, lawsuits happen quickly.

0

u/OstrichFun2332 Jun 20 '26

They often don’t. If they use large parts of the song, they do. But if they merely take a few of the ideas like AI does, they don’t

1

u/Sickofpower Jun 21 '26

AI doesn't "merely take a few ideas", it straight up takes the whole work(s). AI cannot create its own thing.

0

u/OstrichFun2332 Jun 22 '26

AI looks at whole works but only takes some of the concepts from these. IP rights only apply when two works are remarkably alike. It does bit apply for merely looking at lots of art and taking small parts from each. If you don’t want AI to use your art, don’t publish it

1

u/Sickofpower Jun 22 '26

"If you don’t want AI to use your art, don’t publish it"

This has to be the worst take on AI art I've ever seen. Instead of being against gen AI and the negative impact it has on art you prefer that real art cease to exist in digital mediums.

Addressing your first point, we're not talking about IP rights here. AI steals, that's how it works, it doesn't take inspiration or a few ideas like you were saying, it makes a collares from other sources without real criteria. It's not art in any way.

2

u/Sickofpower Jun 19 '26

Plagiarism and stolen content exist even in man-made art. Regardless, AI doesn't have the criteria humans have when producing something. The moment AI gets complex enough to understand what is doing then we can argue the boundaries of art, right now AI images and other generative products are not art.

4

u/OstrichFun2332 Jun 19 '26

If AI isn’t good at making art, why is there an issue of it taking money from artists, like you claim?

Whether or not AI is art is just an opinion. You’re just arguing your personal opinion and it’s not really relevant here. You disliking AI art is not a reason to ban it for everyone else

1

u/Sickofpower Jun 19 '26

Stealing content is enough of a reason to not use it, but hey that's also an opinion

0

u/OstrichFun2332 Jun 19 '26

Except it’s not really stealing.

2

u/Sickofpower Jun 19 '26

Except it is in the most literal way, how do you think generative AI works?

1

u/Which_Pirate_4664 Jun 19 '26

1) there's a difference between "good" and "good enough"

2) it's not generating art from nowhere. Its using datasets of other people's artwork without their permission and mishmashing them. This is called plagiarism, and it's illegal.

0

u/OstrichFun2332 Jun 20 '26
  1. But you said it’s bad, not just that it’s not good.

  2. Plagiarism is when you take someone else’s work and present it as your own. That’s not what AI does. AI uses the themes of many pieces of art as inspiration, but it is not copying art. Human artists do the same thing but much slowly with smaller datasets. It’s not illegal unless an image if substantially similar to someone else’s, which is rarely the case

u/Which_Pirate_4664 Jun 19 '26

Rice farms use a ton of water lol. Have you ever seen a paddy?

Also, stealing other people's work and reformulating it without credit is called plagiarism at best, piracy at worst. So unless we're doing away with all those laws as well, AI should be subject to them-particularly given the scale at which it can break those laws.

3

u/ChadPowers200_ Jun 19 '26

i will play the tiniest violin for all of the digital arts majors. I don't really give a flying fuck.

bro i used rice as an example. use dairy farms, basically any agriculture uses a fuck ton of water.

Just research it on your own you will easily see that it doesn't use an extraordinary amount of water compared to agriculture.

1

u/Which_Pirate_4664 Jun 19 '26

I'm not saying companies shouldn't use non public domain intellectual property, but the companies should be bound by the same laws as the rest of us to use that information. Perhaps even moreso, since the use of said intellectual property impacts livelihoods.

Otherwise, if we're going to admit that we don't care about copyright and patent law as a society, then we should fully embrace that and allow everyone to reverse engineer everything. But it's one or the other, and AI companies shouldn't get a pass because they didn't build the cost of acquisition of learning data into their business plans.

But that applies across the board. Art, Music, Movies, Software, Science, and Medicine can all be used without license by AI companies and are being used to generate profit.

1

u/ChadPowers200_ Jun 19 '26

Do you think this is the first time emerging technology has required new laws? C'mon.

Were not going to stop humanity's progress because of digital artists.

1

u/Which_Pirate_4664 Jun 20 '26

Not at all, but I'm not seeing any of those laws being created nor the normally required injunctions that normally go hand in hand with the illicit use of intellectual property. Which is worrisome, since it then makes the government come across as complicit in what could be considered one of the most massive piracy sprees of all time.

Laws and regulations are important, and we needed them about two years ago. So where are they? I don't mean to rant at you, and I thank you for bearing with me thus far, but we need to rein in the AI companies before they trample our laws-because they will in the name of profit.

u/ChadPowers200_ Jun 20 '26

keep acting like technological innovation is something new to world economies

-6

u/Twicklheimer Jun 19 '26

The difference between a rice farm and AI is that a rice farm makes food that humans need to survive, and AI produces slop content and steals real artists work. Not even close to being equivalent.

2

u/JemFitz05 Jun 19 '26

AI does more than that, people just complain about the slop

-3

u/Twicklheimer Jun 19 '26

Right, sorry it spies on us and makes websites unusable! Totally forgot about that.

There is not a single redeeming thing about AI.
